the clock is ticking as the white house and congress push to avoid a rail shutdown. the presidnt is now calling on lawmakers to step in and help keep that strike from happening. it could happen as early as next week as multiple rail unions rejected a deal in mediation. meanwhile the u.s. markets took a massive dive yesterday amid unrest in china over the nation's covid policies. naomi ruchim joins us now for the latest on all of this. naomi, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. president biden said a rail shutdown would devastate the u.s. economy and shutter many industries. business leaders are concerned that even a brief strike could leave hazardous perishables and chemicals stranded on the tracks. speaker pelosi said this week the house will consider legislation to avert a looming national rail strike. yesterday president biden called on congress to pass a bill adopting the tentative labor

agreement his administration brokered between rail workers and labor leaders after ten unions voted it down. >> a shutdown is unacceptable because of the impact it would have on jobs and families and farms and businesses and community just across the country. >> economists predict a strike could cost the u.s. economy up to $2 billion a day and upset an already fragile supply chain just before the holidays. >> rail accounts for over one-fourth of all the transport of goods in the economy. it's really key to getting goods produced overseas onto store shelves. >> reporter: that comes as companies like apple are already warning of production losses amid the unrest in china over the country's strict covid-19 lockdown. protests spread through multiple cities over the weekend leading to clashes with police and

arrests. several of those demonstrations went as far as calling for the chinese president xi jinping to resign. >> we support the right of standing up and peaceful protests. >> reporter: u.s. markets tumbled monday amid the unrest with the dow dropping almost 500 points. all 12 rail labor unions need to ratify union contracts before december 9th to avoid a shutdown. eight of the unions have approved five-year deals that include 24% pay raises for their workers. union leaders are also pushing for paid sick time. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. naomi, thank you very much. well, the gunman accused of killing ten people at a buffalo supermarket in a hate-filled rampage has pleaded guilty. jericka duncan has a look at the emotional day in court for the victims' families. >> reporter: victims' families could be seen hugging outside a buffalo courtroom today after waiting more than six months for justice. this morning they came face-to-face with the 19-year-old who killed their loved ones and heard him plead guilty to 15 charges including

one count of a domestic act of terrorism motivated by hate in the first degree. it carries a mandatory sentence o life without parole. >> no individual in the history of the state of new york has been found guilty of that domestic terrorism charge motivated by hate until today. >> reporter: prosecutors say the killer spent months researching his intended target, this tops supermarket, because of the number of black people living in the neighborhood. in court today one prosecutor repeated the phrase "because they were black" several times after referring to each person who died. >> ask yourself why it happened. ask yourself what kind of nation are we that this is allowed. >> kat was a wonderful sister. kat was just a good person. >> reporter: barbara mapps and her niece lost 72-year-old katherine massey who went by kat.

>> at nighttime when i miss her the most, i want him gone because i don't want to think he's living and kat's gone. i miss my sister so much. >> reporter: a writer and advocate for children, someone who always believed there was more good in the world than bad. >> what do you think she's saying? >> don't hate this, bobbie. don't hate. >> don't hate. >> i never hated before. >> that was jericka duncan reporting. more than two weeks after the brutal murders of four university of idaho student, students are returning to campus. there is still no arrest in the killings, and that has many people on edge. the school is hosting candlelight vigils scheduled tomorrow for the four students found dead in their beds in an off-campus house. police say the murders appear targeted. the fbi has confirmed that bones found in a georgia landfill belong to a missing toddler. workers spent 30 days digging through more than 1 million

pounds of trash after police said they believe the child's body was left in dumpster. 20-month-old quinton simon was reported missing on october 5th by his mother. 22-year-old leilani simon has been charged in her son's death. retired nfl quarterback brett favre is asking a mississippi court to dismiss a claim filed against him and his company for alleged welfare fraud. the state of mississippi is looking to recover millions of dollars in welfare funds that were supposed to help the needy but were channeled toward a fundament to build a new sports stadium at the university of southern mississippi. favre's attorney called the mississippi department of human services irresponsible for blaming favre for any fraud. >> and as americans scramble home after the holiday weekend there's a serious weather system threatening to wreak havoc across the country. yesterday there were more than

4,900 airline delays, more than 100 cancellations into and out of the u.s. it follows a chaotic sunday with more numbers. more delays are possible today thanks to a storm system that could bring snow to denver and minneapolis. in the south there is likely to be extremely damaging weather, which could involve some large tornados. and residents on hawaii's big island are on high alert after the world's largest volcano erupted following a series of earthquakes. stephanie lum from our honolulu affiliate kgmb has details. >> reporter: the world's largest active volcano lit up the night sky, erupting for the first time in 38 years. thermal images caught the moment it began spewing lava, creating an ash cloud so large it could be seen from space. scientists say it had been building underground for more than two years. p>> we knew it was coming. we just didn't know it was going to be in the middle of the night after thanksgiving weekend.

>> reporter: lava came within four miles of the city of hilo. >> you know, we're way overdue. we were way overdue for an eruption. >> reporter: the scientist in charge says there's no telling what may come next. >> we don't want to try and second-guess the volcano. we have to let it actually show us what it's going to do and then inform people of what's happening asap. >> reporter: another volcano erupted. >> that was the moment it's erupted. this is in a remote area where we can still prepare the people to evacuate at any given notice. >> reporter: scientists say it could take weeks or months for the lava to reach residents if the volcano continues to erupt. and local officials are urging people to stay calm and have a plan in place in case of an emergency. stephanie lum, cbs news, honolulu. well, coming up, houston,

that's just one of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "houston chronicle" reports that classes are canceled again today due to the boil water notice. more than 2 million people in thhousareaere urged to boil their tap water yesterday after a power outage at a purification plant. residents are being told to boil it before cooking, bathing, or drinking. the mayor expects the boil water notice to be lifted early today after state officials analyze water tests. "the wall street journal" reports former vice president mike pence says donald trump should apologize for having dinner with white national list nick fuentes and kanye west. in an interview with "news nation," pence said trump was wrong to give them a seat at the table. trump hosted fuentes and west at a dinner last tuesday. trump said he did not know who fuentes was before the meeting. and the "associated press" says public officials in a rural

f budget carrier frontier airlines says it's no longer going to be taking calls from customers over the phone. the denver-based carrier says its customer care has transferred to fully digital communications using chatbots instead of human beings. if agent support is needed, live chats will be available. the change will help customers. people will have to wait and see. that's your "cbs moneywatch" report for this tuesday morning. i'm dan liebermann, cbs news, new york. five connecticut police officers have been charged after black man in their custody was left paralyzed from the chest down. new haven officers arrested 36-year-old randy cox in june for aallergiced criminal possession of a firearm. during the incident he sustained injuries that left him paralyzed while being transported in a police van with no seatbelts.

there's an amazing update for you this morning on nasa's artemis mission. the orion capsule has reached its farthest distance from earth and has incredible pictures of the moon's surface. cristian benavides reports from miami. >> reporter: new images of the orion capsule as it moves from space. the pictures are taken from over 200,000 miles away. the capsule, officially reaching 268,000 miles, the farthest a spacecraft meant to carry humans has ever gone, eclipsing a record set back in 1970 by apollo 13's odyssey. >> today orion really marked a milestone. >> it was a big milestone for the spacecraft and the artemis 1 mission. it's another sign that this vehicle, the orion, will be able to safely carry astronauts to the moon.

>> reporter: orion is now in a distant retrograde orbit, 40,000 miles from the surface. it will take about a week for its to complete half an orbit around the moon. orion's camera's often streamed back live, allowing us to view the earth and moon from deep space. >> it provides a deep perspective. they're able to watch the earth disappear behind the moon. >> reporter: nasa officials have outlined the progress that's been made and the challenges ahead during a monday press conference. >> a little debris, which our top risk driver is in play until we get out of the space environment. >> reporter: artemis 1 is just the first step in a new era of space exploration. if the mission is successful, the next one set for as early as 2024 will take astronauts on a journey around the moon. and then in 2025, they would return to the lunar surface. cristian benavides, cbs news, miami. coming up on "cbs mornings,"
