joining us now . thank you for joining us now, doctor. you looked at several factors, like sleep, grade, mood. what can you tell us about your findings? >> sure, let me start with agreeing with you, that that's a common question that we get from parents, about how old should my child be before i give them their first mobile phone? and to help answer that question, we surveyed 263 let next children from low income neighborhoods once a year for five years . and over the course of the study they aged from 7 years to 15 years. and we were able by measuring them over time to not only compare kids with phones to kids about phones, but also, follow kids as they acquired their first phone. and at the same time, measure changes , depression, and school grades. the average child received their first
3:14 pm
phone at about 11.5 years of age . and almost all of them had a phone by the time they were 15 . the sweet spot seemed to be between 10.5-12.5, where they got a phone . on average, getting a phone at a younger age was no better or no worse than getting it at an older age, at least, in terms of depressive terms in sleep and school grades . >> how do we tell a kid is mature enough? the average 11-year-old is often times quite different from some kids you might know. >> yeah. well, what i think this findings jested his parents are doing a pretty good job of judging their kid's maturity level, because we saw based on average the effects people might expect. and so, so
3:15 pm
, one thing is, is that we think that children d parents whether to judge whether the child is really mature enough to self-regulate their behavior in terms of letting it distract them from other things that are important, like sleep, like school, like playing or socializing with friends in the real world, like family. and also whether the family has rules in place that will allow them to regulate big kids will be exposed to potentially a lot of stuff when you give them a phone, and as a result, you need, we would like parents to set limits on the time kids use their phones, what they are using it for, when they are using it, and for example, should it be allowed overnight? a lot of family meals her family times? >> rules rules, limits, those are always the key for parents
