tonight. the opioid crisis has been across the country. that included her in california. in fact, take a look at the numbers from the last five years. the number of overdose related deaths in our state has more than tripled in that time. it is from about 2220 17 to more than 6800 last year. there are ways to fight back against it and one with a family trying to reverse the trend by offering community members training on how to use can. it is a medication that can reduce an overdose. it is a mission born from hurting. >> insert it in the nostril. go ahead and push it. 10, okay. and that is it. that is done. it is very easy. >> reporter: micah sawyer is leading this training class for about a dozen people. and when there is a stigma around addiction and narcan, as well. they hide, they keep it underground, they don't want to know about it. narcan, medication used to treat

opioid overdose. his son became addicted to heroin in high school. his son was a star football player and was an avid weightlifter. >> people do not realize that you can be very successful and still be an addict at the same time. not my guess that he bought narcan to help his son if he ever overdose. the medication got them $150 per box. his son died of a dental overdose at someone else's house. and when that is we meet at our mission to find a way to bring narcan to people for a priori affordable price. her neck make us hugs is a nonprofit to help those struggling with addiction. for they have received two grants from the california department of healthcare services. of almost 4000 boxes of narcan to distribute to the community. people like michaela sorry who lost her brother to a dental overdose and maybe >> it could be walking down the street, just a random person. they may need help, also.

of caveats. these are not new robots designed specifically for deadly force. pd has had an array of robots in their arsenal for the last 11 years. they are typically is to transport equipment or for video surveillance. police can outfit these robots with explosive devices in a critical event like a mass shooting or terrorist attack. only the police chief, assistant chief, or deputy chief get on the right using the robots for deadly force. >> the reality is not that san francisco is pioneering a robotic use of force that does not exist right now. >> this is a big deal. this is opening up a pandora's box that could change our society in a significant way. >> as we mentioned, they have had these robots for a while. what was new is today's debate. state law passed in may that requires police departments to get approval by their governing bodies to use military grade equipment.

tonight, dozens of people in the san jose homeless bar once again looking for a new location. today, a judge lifted a restraining order that had stopped at the city from clearing out the camp. now, we have been reporting on the situation for weeks. the situation around the columbus parks, for months. you may remember, the shed city shut down its largest homeless camp. i was sitting in the flight path. many of the campers then move right across the street to a vacant baseball field. now, time is running out for them to figure out their next move. san jose says it is developing a safe parking spot for people who want to state in their rvs at the santa teresa bca station. the city is also talking about using two other vta stations for other tiny homes. the light rail yard in north san jose and the caudal station in the south part of the city could be used for temporary housing. city council is set to discuss the site tomorrow afternoon.

>> my name is karen, i am here volunteering because i experienced housing and food insecurity as a child. >> reporter: karen used to be this little girl who was a single mom fell on hard times. >> we wound up living in a tent at lincoln mead. we relied on the generosity of those around us. all that separated us from any type of dangers in the world was a flimsy piece of canvas. >> reporter: karen has only a handful of photographs from those days. this way, wearing a borrowed address for a church photo. >> i dreaded this day. i knew all of these girls would have beautiful white dresses and veils and gloves and shoes. we were living in a tent at this exact moment. i felt like an actual princess that day. granted, we had come from washing my hair in a spec it with him so. >> it is knowing what hunger

feels like. that makes karen cooking dinner at home no small luxury . when karen cooks, she remembers collecting spent soda cans with her brother. >> once we had enough we would redeem them at the marina for a cheeseburger. my brother and i would share it. >> reporter: she remembers watching the face of her mom when her kids surety dollar hamburger. >> my mom would often been, s other weekends for visitation. my mom would tell us when we were leaving on friday night, eat whatever you can. just eat. >> do you still cry for that little girl? >> i do. i do. i feel sad for her and her brother and for my mom. >> what do you do when things hurt and memories haunt? you live like karen who channels the pain of hunger when she was a child into helping others. >> i don't believe that children and families should go

we have rain heading our way for the first time in over three weeks but is not quite there yet but it is getting closer. clear conditions to make it over the temperatures are down into the 30s. in recent class tomorrow but it should be mostly dry during the daylight hours on wednesday. the exception of that might be the north bay. the rain moves in tomorrow night a wet and windy thursday. more rain in the forecast as we head into the weekend with a different storm system. the clouds are increasing get a chance at a couple of showers . mainly along the coast by early afternoon. a better chance of that will be around the time the sun goes down. that will be activity that is more missed than hit. the substantial rain moving to our north will be diving in late wednesday evening and then spreading across the bay area as we head to the rest of wednesday night into drivetime on thursday morning. there is a little narrow band of intense rain on the radar situation. meteorologist love our acronyms. they are a cold front already band. this is where
