these guys are dry over the bay area for now. rain will move in. juliette goodrich in for sarah dante tonight the whole bay area is set for a serious downpour. it is not just rain. it is a first alert weather dave cherry want to give yourself some extra time on the way to work. that is where we can see some of the fiercest conditions. wanted to bring in chief meteorologist paul heggen on when exactly that rain is going to roll in. monday first showers are beginning to hit the ground in the north bay right now. it is still a few hours down the line. this is the beginning of this rain event. this will blip bring plenty of rain to the bay area, as well. there is the bulk of the heavier rain up to our north. let's switch over

the tomorrow. the steadier, heavier rain and making its way into the northern half of the bay area over the next three to four hours. this band here, we call it a frontal rain. that will contain the heaviest downpours and it will produce the gusty wind over 40 miles an hour as it makes its way through right around the peak of rush hour tomorrow morning. that is why tomorrow is the first alert day. it is not just the heavy rain or the gusting wind. it will occur when a lot of people are hitting the roads for the morning commute. that heaviest rain moves through. we will have to do with off and on hours as we had to the rest of thursday. another round of rain will be heading your way this weekend. that will not be as organized medicine tonight and tomorrow is actually an atmosphere river. borderline atmospheric river. lever one on the scale on the bay area. we are talking about some much-needed moisture happening

at a poor time, right around that morning rush. we will track the rain and the wind gust hour by hour in a few minutes. >> this storm will deliver some much needed snow to see her appear today was the day to travel. once the stone starts falling overnight, there could be white out conditions in the mountains with about three feet of snow expected in the higher elevations. that is certainly good news for the tahoe resorts that opened earlier this season. katie nielsen shows us it means big business for bay area ski shops. medium snug, easy, easy. >> reporter: one of the owners of the ski shop in canfield. ever since the storm came into the forecast, they can barely keep up with all of the added business. >> the minute the first snow hits it is like i have to get all of my gear ready. there is only a small number of stores in the bay area's that do this as a specialized line of work. >> the shop has been family owned for 50 years in 1972.

they sell ski and snowboard equipment with rentals and tuneups. they are best known for boot fitting. >> business is booming now, but that has not always been the case, especially when mother nature does not cooperate. >> in 2013, the drought was awful . it was brutal. when the snow conditions were terrible, families said maybe instead of going skiing, we will go to hawaii or mexico or somewhere else. >> reporter: this year's early snow change everything. >> mother nature is going to tell us, she will shut us down monday. it is not today. >> reporter: the rush of customers started first thing in the morning and never let up >> if it is open, i will definitely be up there. >> reporter: dylan mcmillan came to the stop because he is going this weekend after seeing the forecasted storm. he said

loss. >> reporter: they conspired to get some of the panels displayed in the united nations headquarters in new york. launching the quilt and the fight against the disease as a worldwide effort. >> that is one of the things the quilt became, an entry point for people to join the movement against hiv and a.i.d.s. >> reporter: these days as active as he is fighting for causes he believes in. he is still marvels at his own survivability. while he is proud of the lifetime of commitment award, he has a tongue-in-cheek response to it. >> it is a little bit responding, i am getting quite a few of these these last month. i am thinking, is someone talking to my doctor? am i on my way out? is this their last chance to say good job? >> reporter: if it is, it would include his old friend and co-conspirator, jim bunn.

dyinafter eating fentanyl at a public playground. yesterday he had a medical emergency. the report says the person claiming to be the child's parent posted on social media that his son needed to be revived with narcan after ingesting fentanyl. the police are not confirming those details but do tell us that officers searched the park for drugs, but did not find any. tonight, kpix is getting answers to the complaint made by community members after the mysterious dust in martinez over things getting weekends. county health officials tell us of the white ashley substance was released by the martinez refining company. health officials said the company failed to notify them before hand. i do not think there was any immediate health risks as a result of the dust, they did

say it had higher than normal levels of heavy metal. they also say anyone experiencing respiratory issues should contact contra costa county health. onto our big story now. first alert weather that will eventually kick in at midnight tonight or >> what is the reason for that? >> everything overlap of the poor timing can be definitely want the rain, but we do not need the wind along with it. but getting some rain. take a look at the big picture. this is a decent storm system dropping down towards us. it has been soaking the coast of northern california for most of the day. we will show you on the doppler where it is at the moment. if you ghostly returns along the coast of the north bend. there have been a few reports of a few hundredths of an inch of rain. now was in the last hour. there is some stuff out there. the bulk of

the moisture is north. that will make its way into. as in future cast. really just soaking the bay area through the morning commute. this forecast moe l progss of that heavy rain that will contain the gustiest winds. the other forecast about 15 minutes ago shows this moving in around 5:00 in the morning. this is about 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. either way the morning commute will be wet and windy. the heaviest rain pushes off to the east. follow-up showers are not likely as we head into the afternoon. again, it is going to be more hit than miss in the afternoon. we are not done with the rain chances. we stay dry on friday. it will be a cold start friday. not very warm during the afternoon either. this model keeps it outside the bay area on saturday morning. we try to bring in an early tuesday the day on saturday and then another round of showers likely

developed by late afternoon . let's return to the current storm system. the wind is beginning to pick up your day will be strongest as the heaviest rain picks through 30 to 40 mile an hour wind gusts. that is also enough to potentially bring down some branches and bring down some power lines, as well. the winds will relax once the heaviest rain moves out. how much. a good soaking rain for the elevation spots. that is especially in the santa cruz mountains that are closer to an inch of an rain. the high sierra with 2.5 feet of snow out of the system. the next one that follows it up this weekend will add more on top of that. we're talking about three to six feet of total snow over the next four or five days. now, we are still waiting. temperatures are mostly in the 40s to low 50s for the warmest. some spots around 40 right now will warm up a little bit as the clouds roll in. we do not warm up very much at all tomorrow.
