latest storm is not done yet. >> not quite, anyway . it is still raining steadily through portions of the tri-valley and santa clara valley and santa cruz mountains. i'm tracking how long this will last in the first alert weather forecast. first, we are celebrating world aids day. good afternoon, i am reed cowan. let's start with that mess of rain around the bay area . in the sierra there is a freeway under their . this is eastbound i-80 at soda springs. you can see traffic sitting still for now, the freeway, kind of a parking lot. it has been shut down between alta and the state line. and we are drying out in some spots as we give you a snapshot of our bay area bridges and roadways. but as you know it was a different scene earlier . look here, on echo drive where the water was pouring. some of it covering a

resorts the open early this season. as kpix 5's katie nielsen is about to show you it also means big business for ski shops . >> have you tried them on? >> one of the owners of the canfield snow shop, they can barely keep up now, with all the other business. expect the minute the first snow hits it's like i've got to get all my gear ready, except there's only a small number of stores in the bay who do this as a specialized line of work. >> the shop has been family owned since it opened 50 years ago, in 1972. they sell see ski and snowboard equipment and do tuneups, but they are best known for boot fitting. >> we need to have a talk about, these are threaded. >> it hasn't always been the case, especially when mother nature doesn't cooperate . >> in 2013 the drought was awful, and in '14 it was brutal. instead of going to ski, families said maybe instead of going skiing we will go to hawaii, or mexico,

looks like a nice time to get the skis ready . >> i would wait to travel up there, though, because we showed you the view from i-80, and it's a parking lot. travel, strongly discouraged in that direction until the snow stops. we can expect clear and cold conditions tonight, patchy fog in the valleys, and as a potential it would be freezing. it's not widespread though. mostly sunny on friday, but chilly temperatures throughout the day, for five to 10 degrees below normal . let's take a look at what is on first alert doppler right now, the last of the rain, falling most heavily around san jose . that will push farther and farther east oma and you can see a very well defined back edge to this rainfall that's pushing everything away from the bay area, so the rain will move out, the clouds will move out, and that's where temperatures drop off . clear skies overhead tonight and tomorrow . there's that fog through the central valley. i don't think we will have to worry about it a whole lot. tomorrow clouds start to return, moisture moves up from the south big some

models bring that towards us, others bring it further off to our south and southeast, i think that's the more likely scenario, but we'll keep reevaluating . but rain chances will most likely return ayanoor plants , just make sure to have that rain plan in place. it will sweep across the we will have break, but more showers are lined up the rest of the saturday, sunday into monday, as well. adding up the rain through sunday we are talking about attends to a quarter of an inch for most of us, a little more in the higher elevations and santa cruz mountains, but more rain will fall sunday night into monday, very much-needed rain for the bay without the threat of flooding or wind damage . more snow in store for the high sierra into early tomorrow morning . we are looking at the potential for a couple

inches to a foot of total accumulation. but they will add more on top of that with another few inches to a couple feet in the higher elevations as we head through sunday morning, and they will get more snow sunday and monday . at side, still what in san jose where the temperature is 49 and still raining in livermore where the temperature is 47 degrees . for everybody else, with clearing skies it's going to be cold tomorrow morning, mid to upper 20s in the north bay valleys with low 30s inland, and upper 30s around the bay and along the coast. so a freeze warning is in effect for the santa clara hills, but most of the north bay with temperatures dropping down in the mid to upper 20s, so any plants you have, you want to bring inside, and make sure animals have a warm spot for the night. they will appreciate it. things are going to warm up, but mostly 50s with cold spots not even hitting 50 during the afternoon. we'll
3:19 pm
see temperatures staying in the low to mid 50s for the foreseeable future in most locations. the next chance of rain showers is not a washout, it won't rain everywhere this weekend, but pinning down the dry breaks will be the challenge of the next couple days, because this weather isn't very organized, which means it's hard to give you an exact time frame for when you can get stuff done outside . reed? >> paul, thank you. a good reminder to take care of our animals in this weather. perry has passed away at his home he was the youngest player to win the cy young award in both leagues. willie mays called perry a good man and good baseball player, and a good friend. perry was known as a master of doctoring the ball . in 2016 the giants dedicated a statue of him at at&t park. perry is survived and celebrated by his wife and children.
