set up, the storm responsible for all of this, technically, that storm hasn't gotten here yet. what we have experienced here today, was the atmospheric river that was getting pulled up in front of the storm. it managed to reach down into the subtropics and pull a really good plume of moisture and directed right at us today, it was kind of like the preview before the storm itself actually gets here, if you watch the progression of that, there is tomorrow, it will be on-again off-again showers not only tomorrow, but monday and tuesday . we have got three more days to go, the next three days will not be like today with widespread continuous rain, it will be a different character. i will explain what that is like we will talk about snow coming up in the first alert forecast. now, back to you. the weather was raining on pleasanton's holiday parade tonight or it would have rained on it if the parade had marched on but it did not, it was canceled. but the city was

able to light their city christmas tree tonight on main street. with the help of lots of umbrellas in the crowd, and lots of pretty lights. wet weather could not dampen the spirit in san ramon, the city was able to drape that huge tree and christmas lights near city hall. it even held a tree lighting event with entertainment, treats, crafts, and a holiday toy drive. in other news tonight, san francisco firefighters were busy this morning, first a commercial fire south of market just before 1:30, it was contained in about an hour, no reports of injury or if anyone was displaced and no word on what caused the fire. around 4:00 this morning, a two-alarm fire in bernal heights, this one an unoccupied residential building , this one took much longer to get under control, firefighters finally got it contained around 9:00, no injuries to report here, and the cause is still being investigated. tomorrow, san francisco's tenderloin center it will be closed permanently, it has been controversial since the state of emergency order last

year. it has provided basics like showers, as well as resources to reduce, overdose deaths by connecting people to treatment options. city supervisor dean preston represents the tenderloin and he criticized them for ignoring the board of supervisors resolution urging her not to close it, calling", and unconscionable failure of leadership ". in berkeley, the uc strike entering its fourth week, with finals approaching, many students worry it will impact their grades, now progress is being made earlier this week, the uc system signed a tentative agreement with a group of workers but out of solidarity, the workers say they will not return to work until everyone has a fair contract. kpix 5's da lin at uc berkeley and talked to the students on the effects of the strike . >> reporter: on the group discussions, the labs and small classes, talking to the graduate student instructors

have been canceled, students say it is not business as usual. it is quiet at this uc berkeley community student room, everyone focused on their work, no one is touching the pool or ping-pong table. >> it is nice standing with a group of people. i feel i could give you more productivity. >> reporter: these three friends , no lectures in the next several days but a lot of book reading, researching and going over notes to prepare for finals, which start on december 12th. >> indefinitely, the workload is a bit harder because i'm not getting that extra assistance. >> all of the assistance that i had had been canceled. everything that i had been taught as a graduate student has been canceled. >> reporter: a double major in psychology and legal studies, his classes are hard enough, even with the help of graduate student instructors, or the strike has wiped away any kind of assistance for berkeley and uc students across the state. >> really going to talk and study with other people. i'm going to make plans with people like schedule of events at libraries or dorms.

peterson hong says the perfect storm of covid, the flu and rsp is putting an enormous strain on the bay area hospital systems especially children hospitals which have seen an influx of rsp cases. >> so for many pediatricians, they are constantly in elective surgeries, they are not accepting a lot of transfers when the beds are full. >> reporter: even with cases of covid, other viruses on the rise, reinstating mask mandates would be a choice of last resort, giving the pushback and how politically charged the issue of masks have become. >> i think there is very little political appetite to do this and we are going to try to not do it as much as possible for the season. i think l.a. will probably pull the trigger sooner because they have redefining criteria in the bay area. >> reporter: the good news that

will get a line of showers that moves across in the predawn hours, sunday, and then a few more like that. and it is pretty much on again off again. all the way through sunday, monday and tuesday morning, so what is different about what is still to come is today, it was widespread and steady, everybody was getting it and it seemed like it went on for a while. over the next three days, it will be a lot more -- you will get a quick burst of rain coming through, and it will not rain for hours. and then you will get another little shower that will come through, some of these right here as we get into monday night we are getting close to the center of this thing, where all of the coldest air will be, that is where you can maybe get an isolated thunderstorm which means, even though it won't be prolonged widespread rain when it comes through, you can get a really good brief little downpour. maybe even here some thunder or get some hail in ardo it tat we. but again it

just went rough tohe day was foadding up big rainfall totals in the gates. the next two days will still be good because there is still rain coming through. but it won't be quite as impressive but if you added up, the numbers look good, we are still looking at maybe 3/10 of an inch of rain for the south bay. maybe as much of a half an inch of rain in the north bay. when this hits the sierra, it is great news, here is the interesting thing you can see play out we will let the snow go for now, until about 2:00 in the morning, remember the cold front will come through around 2:00 in the morning once that cold front hits the sierra, watch what goes to the snow level. it really starts to come down the mountain, and it gets down to around 4500 feet maybe, with all of that cold air, it really is like a snowmaking machine. a couple of feet on the past, maybe three from this, that is great news for the sierra, and great news for the snowpack, and really bad news if you have to travel
