polls open in just a few hours. senator raphael warnock hoping to expand democrats' 50-seat majority, but he'll need to defeat republican challenger herschel walker. both men made their final pitch yesterday, rushing to secure last-minute votes. skyler henry is in atlanta. skyler, good morning. >> reporter: hey, anne-marie, good morning to you. once again georgia is back in the spotlight for a runoff election that will give a better picture in terms of control in the u.s. senate. now, the democrats will have the majority, but today's election could be an indicator how lawmakers will move forward with their legislative strategies next session. >> when i say warnock, you say vote. warnock. >> vote. >> warnock. >> vote. >> reporter: it's decision day in georgia, and the highly anticipated senate runoff contest between raphael warnock and his republican challenger herschel walker.

>> i'm telling you vote, vote, vote, flood the polls. >> reporter: both candidates made their rounds monday in the final push to get voters to the polls. >> i'm working on turnout, turnout, turnout. >> reporter: walker continued his bus tour. >> i think herschel would lead more for the people of georgia. >> i really enjoyed seeing how passionate they are about the younger generation. >> reporter: nearly 2 million voters have already cast their ballots, setting early voting records in georgia. mny who cast their ballots today are expected to face long lines outside on a day where rain is predicted for much of the state. >> even last week when made to wait in line for two or threts have the majority in the senate, but 51 seats instead of 50 would give them an easier time legislating and appointing

judges. now, polls will go from 7:00 to 7:00 today. election officials say that they are anticipating more than a million people to get out and vote here in georgia. now, one thing we should also point out, two of the more recognizable faces, president biden and former president trump really stayed away from this runoff race, though, both men chimed in giving support for their party's candidates yesterday. anne-marie? >> skyler henry in atlanta. skyler, thank you very much. so more than 30,000 people are still without power in north carolina after two substations were damaged by gunfire over the weekend. officials say it could take until thursday before all the power is restored in moore county. a state of emergency was declared as temperatures fell below freezing. schools are canceled for a second day today, and there's a nightly curfew in effect from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. >> this was a terrible act, and it appears to be an intentional, willful, and malicious act. >> i can promise you to the

perpetrators out there, we will find you. >> well, the fbi has joined the investigation into the attack. there's no word on the motive, and no one has claimed responsibility. jury deliberations are expected to continue today in the criminal tax fraud trial involving the trump organization. jurors deliberated for about four hours yesterday following a month-long trial. they're deciding whether former president donald trump's company helped expectation executives dodge paying taxes on perks. allen weisselberg pleaded guilty to evading taxes on almost $2 million in company paid perks. and we're learning more about what the supreme court justices heard yesterday between faith and gay rights. cbs correspondent jan crawford breaks it all down. >> everything i break is one of >> everything i create is one of a kind. no two logos are the same.

>> how about people who don't believe in interracial marriage or about people who don't believe that disabled people should get married. >> reporter: colorado attorney general phil wiser said it's one of equal treatment. >> when you open the doors to serve the public, you have to serve all members and not discriminate based on who someone is. >> reporter: now, the court had a similar case four years ago concerning a baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. he won barely. the court did not take up the bigger first amendment issues we have in this case. we expect a decision here by june. jan crawford, cbs news, the supreme court. well, the cdc is urging americans to get the latest flu and covid vaccines amid the highest influenza hospitalizations at this time of year in nearly a decade. health officials say nearly every state is battling high levels of flu-like illnesses. respiratory viruses like rsv and

covid are overwhelming the hospitals. the cdc is also recommending people wear masks on public transportation to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. and breaking overnight, emmy winning "cheers" actor kirstie alley has died. >> i've got a little something for you here. >> what is it? >> one of the shrimps from the buffet table. >> ew. >> you're lucky. my first choice was an oyster. >> so was mine, but i hired you. >> alley's children said their mother died from a cancer only recently discovered. she starred as rebecca howe on "cheers". in a post on twitter her two children wrote our mother's zest and passion for life were unparalleled and inspire us to live life to the fullest just as she did. alley was 71.

"the dallas morning news" says vigils and memorials are being held for 7-year-old athena strand who was abducted from her texas home and found dead last week. people gathered last night for a vigil at the courthouse in wise county. authorities say that the little girl was kidnapped from her home in paradise, texas, last wednesday, and her body was found two days later.

31-year-old tanner lynn horner, a contract driver for fedex, was arrested on kidnapping and murder changes. investigators say he confessed to abducting and killing the girl. >> she was always very happy. >> thousands of people are expected to attend candlelight vigils tonight for athena strand including one in fort worth. and "the arizona republic" says katie hobbs certified the arizona november election results. she was joined by other officials including outgoing governor doug ducey. hobbfe lake in the race for governor last month. the election certificate fe window for formal election challenges and recounts in several close races. lake is expected to file a lawsuit over the election. and still to come, hertz settlement. how much the rental car company will pay hundreds of customers who say they were falsely

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. well, it will be a busy day at the u.s. capitol. members of the house are set to vote on the respect for marriage act today. the legislation protecting same-sex marriage passed last week and is now expected to make its way to president biden's desk. >> and also today congressional leaders will take part in a gold medal ceremony to honor law enforcement personnel who protected the capitol during the january 6th insurrection. nike officially cut ties with nba star kyrie irving, and rental car company hertz settled

hundreds of lawsuits with false reports of car theft. dan lieberman has today's "moneywatch" record. >> there will be a look at whether the federal reserve will continue to hike rates. the dow lost 482 points, nasdaq lost 221 points, s&p 500 was down 72 points. nike has officially cut ties with brooklyn nets' point guard kyrie irving. nike initially suspended him and scrapped the release of the kyrie 8 signature shoe last month after kyrie posted a link on social media to a book and a movie containing anti-semitic messaging. a nike spokesperson said kyrie is no longer a nike athlete. his agent called the decision mutual. hertz, the car rental company will pay $168 million to hundreds of claims related to the company falsely reporting rental cars as stolen. these cases resulted people being arrested and eve
