food bank. >> about 75 kids and 20 adults over two days and we bagged about 30,000 pounds of food, and we continued it for the next three years. our last one was january, 2020. so we got right in before the lockdown. >> and when the pandemic hit, that didn't stop them from wanting to help . >> we couldn't go back to the food bank, because of restrictions here in that school, so we ended up doing a food insecurity awareness campaign, and a virtual food drive to the food bank. and we were aiming for $2022 for the class of 2022, and we ended up raising close to $7000. so the kids were really proud. >> the fifth grade legacy project at edison elementary still partners up with the food bank. and kate and her family
3:04 pm
continue to serve their community. expect it's an ongoing tradition now, which is very exciting. >> i love that the school supports it. >> no matter how old you are, it shows, you can always make the biggest difference. gianna franco, kpix 5 . >> kids helping kids. and if our kids can lead the way, so can we also, in following their great example to curb food insecurity in the bay area. if you want to be part of that noble effort, go to our website, kpix.com/give or, follow the qr code on your screen to find a way you can be connected to community. and we like to say at channel 5, when you are connected you are part of our family. here is paul heggen with our weather . >> most of us have had a bit of a chance to dry out with recent rainfall. a couple of showers are trying to creep down in

elevation into the santa clara valley. futurecast shows that trend continuing as we head into this evening . so be prepared for a couple light showers if you are making your way across the santa clara valley. that activity will fade off the radar within a couple hours after the sun goes down. clear skies for the rest of tonight, and we will dry out for the next roughly 48 hours for the next rain chance. clear skies, which means it will be cold tonight, another freeze warning in the north bay, where temperatures will dip to the 20s and 30s. make sure plants are brought inside. it's likely you've done that already, because we've had multiple freeze warnings. make sure your animals have a warm place to spend the night. we will check out that next rain chance and moment. san francisco supervisors will take a final vote allowing police to use deadly force via robots. that proposal has received a lot of pushback.
3:06 pm
>> defund the police! expect some protesters at city hall, yesterday, held banners that read no killer robots . they call the proposal dangerous and reckless. san francisco police already used these robots, but this policy would lead officers use them differently, and police say it's needed to protect officers' lives in dangerous situations. we will monitor the vote and bring you the updates as we hit them. estate says flu activity has increased from moderate to high. santa clara county is now seeing high levels of covid-19 and their wastewater. this is a dramatic change after the change from july to october. a press conference was held, saying levels are skyrocketing. the county has also reached the cdc's highest transmission level. >> we remembered the last two winters have been extraordinarily difficult, and i am unfortunately needing to tell you that this winter is

downslope into the santa clara valley. they won't have a whole lot of success, but don't be surprised if you find sprinkles on your evening commute. things will be quieting down over the next three hours, and then clearing skies, which will make it chilly. but plenty of sunshine tomorrow. we'll see clouds increasing from the northwest as we head through tomorrow night into thursday. and the rain gets closer and closer this is one version of one forecast model. i'll show you the specific timing, but keep in mind, when we are about 48 hours out, this could speed up or slow down by a matter of 3-6 hours. so be flexible with your plan adjustments. showers move into the bay by the midday timeframe. so we are looking at the potential for a messy thursday afternoon and evening commute. that's the timeframe of greatest concern. that activity moves out, we
3:19 pm
will see lingering showers thursday evening and thursday night. then a dry break. a couple sparkles on friday, but then the next system lining up will be taking aim by the time the sun goes down on friday, with a good chance of rain adding up over the weekend. suggest this first system, generally a quarter inch to half an inch. some spots in the higher elevations might overachieve a little bit. but the next one, the atmospheric river has the potential to bring anywhere up to 3 1/2 inches . say we got have this much, that would still be a very nice soaking rainfall for the bay area. we'll tip you updated on that, and the snowfall expected in the sierra. this first round won't be a whole lot, maybe less than 3 inches at lake level at tahoe. but into the weekend, if you want to take advantage of the snow, go up, friday afternoon. because once the snow falls it's going to keep falling. will add anywhere from 4-7 feet of additional snowfall through the weekend into early next week. in the short-term,
