re-election in georgia. cbs news projects warnock has defeated republican challenger herschel walker in the runoff election. it means democrats will hold an outright 51-49 majority in the u.s. senate when the new congress convenes next month. it also brings an end to the republicans' lackluster performance in the midterm elections. skyler henry has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. senator warnock's victory marks a bit of history as he now becomes the first black senator from georgia to win a full six-year term. the win also means that democrats will have a bit more leverage in the senate, as well, moving forward more easily with their legislative agenda. >> the people have spoken. [ cheers ] >> reporter: democratic senator raphael warnock claimed victory late tuesday night following a hard-fought senate runoff election in georgia. >> voting is faith put into

action. and georgia, you have been praying with your lips and your legs. [ cheers ] >> reporter: cbs news projects the incumbent senator warnock earned his first full six-year term by beating out republican challenger herschel walker. >> one of the things i want to tell all of you is you never stop dreaming. i don't want any of you to stop dreaming. i don't want any of you to stop believing in america. >> reporter: more than 1.8 million people voted early in the state, shattering records. >> it was neck and neck and neck and neck, but it had to come out this way. >> reporter: senator warnock's win in georgia gives democrats 51 seats in the senate and a slim but crucial majority to help further president biden's agenda. >> knew that there was something big on the line when it came to this particular election, and so they wanted to make sure that they made their voices heard. >> reporter: the president, who stayed out of the state, took to social media last night saying

that he called warnock to congratulate him on his win, adding that georgia voters stood up for our democracy and rejected ultra maga-ism. now exit polls out of georgia show that voters are split in terms of characteristics and qualities that they wanted out of a candidate. some 36% said that relateability was the biggest priority for them. 32% said that honesty and integrity were what they wanted to see out of their candidate. >> very interesting. skyler henry in atlanta. thank you so much. well, happening today, the supreme court is set to hear arguments in a case that could have major implications on federal elections across the country. republican lawmakers in north carolina claim the u.s. constitution gives state legislatures exclusive authority over elections. it includes sole power to draw congressional districts and implement voting laws. if the high court agrees, it could mean state courts nationwide would no longer be able to strike down election

maps drawn by state lawmakers because of gerrymandering. and breaking overnight, a federal judge in washington dismissed a lawsuit against saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman in the killing of jamal khashoggi. the u.s.-based journalist was killed by saudi agents inside the saudi arabian consulate in istanbul in 2018. american intelligence officials concluded the saudi crown prince ordered the operation. khashoggi's fiancee and a pro democracy group filed the lawsuit, but the judge said he had to throw it out after the biden administration said the crown prince should be granted head of state immunity. and we are learning new details in the major verdict involving the trump organization. the former president's company was convicted on all counts in a tax fraud case. it's not the only legal issue facing donald trump, though. the special counsel overseeing investigations into him is just getting started. word broke yesterday of the first subpoenas linked to the

effort to overthrow -- overturn, rather, the 2020 election. scott macfarlane has details on that. >> reporter: the verdict from the jury in manhattan was overwhelming on just the second day of deliberations. the former president's company convicted on 17 counts including conspiracy, tax fraud, and falsifying business records, all part of a 15-year-long criminal scheme in which executives were given off-the-books perks including luxurious cars, rent-free apartments, and private school tuition for relatives. prosecutors built the case around star witness and longtime trump organization finance chief allen weisselberg who acknowledged personal greed drove the scheme. trump himself was not charged in the case, but prosecutors argued in court he knew about the fraud. his company now faces up to $1.6 million in fines. >> you can't put a corporation in jail, but you can subject them to fines, and this will have real collateral consequences. >> reporter: meanwhile, another probe into trump is expanding. cbs news has confirmed newly

appointed special counsel jack smith sent subpoenas to local election officials in arizona, wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania, seeking their communications with former president trump and his allies as they attempted to overturn the 2020 election results. >> if he can gather evidence from the different state officials that reflect an attempt to overturn the election in an improper way, that presents a very straightforward criminal case potentially against the former president. >> reporter: this comes as the house january 6th select committee is zeroing in on trump and his inner circle with the chairman telling reporters the panel expects to recommend criminal charges. >> we will do some referrals, but -- we're not there yet. >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. a suspect accused of killing five people in a colorado lgbtq nightclub is facing more than 300 criminal charges.

yesterday anderson lee aldrich was charged with murder, attempted murder, and hate crimes. prosecutors say the 22-year-old opened fire with an ar-15-style rifle inside club q last month. they say the number of charges are meant to send a message. >> we're not going to tolerate actions against community members based on their sexual identity. those types of things. members of that community have been harassed, intimidated, and abused for too long. >>ldrich facp in houtarole if nvicteon the firstre thousands of people in north carolina could have their power restored by late tonight after two substations were damaged by gunfire over the weekend. duke energy says it expects to have power back up before midnight for more than 35,000 customers in moore county who have been without electricity since saturday. schools are closed again today. the state sent generators to the county and is helping feed

althugh making its way closer to a major highway connecting the east and west sides of hawaii's big island. the 20 national guard members will help with traffic control and assist in other areas. authorities have assured residents they're not in danger as of now. well, nurses strike in minnesota has been averted, and bill cosby faces a new lawsuit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports five women filed a new sex abuse lawsuit in new york against bill cosby, nbc, and two other companies. it claims cosby abused or assaulted each woman decades ago, and it also claims that nbc studios and carsy werner television facilitated the sexual assault by failing to check his power and behavior. nbc said it would not comment on legal issues. a spokesman for cosby called the lawsuit frivolous. axios says a looming nurse strike in minnesota is called off following a tentative contract deal.

last week the chief medical officer at a children's hospital talked about what could happen if there was a strike. >> the reality is that in a setting of a work stoppage, the critically ill children in particular will need to be transferred to other hospitals outside of minnesota. >> nurses were set to go on strike this weekend. the agreement, which still needs a final vote, calls for raises of up to 18% and language to address chronic understaffing. in september about 15,000 minnesota nurses went on strike for three days over pay and staffing levels. and "the new york post" says erosion from hurricanes ian and nicole revealed an 80-foot mysterious structure on a florida beach. during thanksgiving weekend, beach-goers in daytona beach shores discovered the wooden object with spikes sticking out buried in the sand. officials say that they do not know what it is.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the digital media company buzzfeed announced that it will cut some 12% of its staff. it is citing economic conditions and a shift in how people consume media. buzzfeed now joins cnn, newspaper chain gannett, and amc networks among companies that have recently reduced staff. the buzzfeed cuts are expected to impact about 180 workers, and the move comes as the company's stock is at an all-time low, down 90% over last year.

inflation is forcing folks to find side gigs. more companies are cutting ties with kanye west, and a classic holiday cocktail with a mayo twist. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: the stock market closed lower tuesday for the fourth straight day as fears of a recession gripped wall street waiting on more economic date this week for clues on what to expect next from the fed. the dow lost 350 points. the nasdaq dropped 225. s&p 500 lost 57 points. higher inflation is seeing more americans take on multiple jobs to make ends meet. in november the economy added 263,000 jobs, topping estimates. buried in the details -- 165,000 jump in people holding multiple jobs. the largest rise since june. according to one neighborhood.com survey, 68% of adults have or plan to pick up a side gig.
