a big, big roadblock. empty shelves. good evening, i'm sara donchey. chances are someone in your family has been sick lately. taking care of sick kids is never easy. we know flu. rsv and covid have not been kind to our hospitals. they are feeling the pressure once again. more than 4200 covid patients are in the hospital across california. the highest number since the summer omicron surge and again, that's just covid. and, kids don't seem to be faring well right now. the state is trying to add more pediatric hospital beds as quick as they can. the capacity for pediatric icu beds is down 20% statewide. as low as 12% in some places. as a big sign of how things are going, look no

further than your drugstore. normal the shelves packed with children's fever reducer are empty. andrea nakano is in the north bay. >> reporter: we walked into this pharmacy and the shelves were empty. medications like tylenol and motrin were all gone. according to a ucsf infectious disease specialist, this short and could last a while. parents are walking into drugstores and finding empty shelves like this one. >> and there are so many different types. but, none of them were on the shelves and it was just i want to just relieve, give them some relief for the evening. >> reporter: annalisa hightour has two kids five and eight years old. her family was hit with one of the respiratory viruses going around. >> we happened to just recover from covid. so i have stuff in the house and i understand that is important. especially for parents. you want to take your

kids' pain away. >> reporter: an infectious disease specialist from ucsf says the triple-demic is to blame for children's over the counter medication shortage. >> we have so many viruses out right now. there is a perceived need that parents need to stock up on ms. >> reporter: parents are advised to be flexible with the brand and use alternatives to fever control such as cooling blankets and he suggests talking to your pharmacist. >> take advantage of the amazing pharmacists we have in the bay area. they can help parents think about taking an adult 200-milligram tab of ibuprofen and cutting it in half and mixing it in apple sauce. >> reporter: with no signs of the triple determinic ending, the shortage is expected to

last through the winter. annalisa hightower hopes her family is not hit from a bug again. the one positive of their recent covid is she has the medication to ease symptoms at home. >> i don't want to go to the er. there is so much going on right now and i don't want to take them and take other resources away. >> reporter: andrea nakano, kpix5. >> rite aid said we are working with suppliers to mitigate the shortages. parents should speak with the pharmacist for recommendations. well, flu season usually means winter has arrived. so does this. all of the rain we have gotten lately has made things look festive in the sierra. this is what things look like right now. this is a live camera off of highway 50 just outside of south lake tahoe. the roads are clear. now. not for long though. more snow is.coming. good news for the ski resort. live pictures

from boreal base. no one up there this late. but the camera moves around to different parts of the slope when people are out there. paul is here to tell us about the rain and snow on the way. >> right. rain for us. this first system will not bring a lot of rain to us or snow to the high sierra. but it is a first alert weather day because of the timing. in the north bay,the rain will move in earl lest by early afternoon with rain chances peaking north of the golden gate late afternoon into the early evening hours which means it will be wet for the evening commute. the rain drops down to the golden gate by late afternoon. this rain is not going to be as intense as what we saw last thursday morning. and, the winds are not going to be as strong. but it is still likely to be a mess on the roads until you go further south into the south bay where it looks like the rain chances will be a little bit lower. not a guarantee of rain in the rain shadowed areas but also the rain arriving just a little bit laterment maybe after the peak

of rush hour. either way, i would plan on extra time. winter weather advisory for the high sierra with six to 12 inches of snow in the the higher elevations through 5:00 a.m. friday. much more snow this weekend and much more rain in store for the bay area. details in a few minutes. >> with all that rain and snow many mind, it might make you wonder how our water supply is doing. the north bay was off to a slow start. kpix5's john ramos has more on how things are looking now. >> reporter: to currently standing at about two-thirds capacity, it would be hard for lake laganitas to get any more average. the marin municipal water district lists it at 99.91% of the historic average this time of the year. but only because of the near miracle the area saw last year. this season, the area has only seen

seven inches of rain. but october and november of 2021, the tamalpais watershed had 22 inches of rain. they were considering running a pipeline across the richmond san rafael bridge to bring the water in. >> that resurged our water supply and our reservoirs. and, we have been able to remain above or at average storage levels. >> reporter: the same the true further north in novato. the north marin water district has lake stafford and the agency's general management tony williams says while rainfall in its watershed is also down, the reservoir is right about normal for early december. >> from that standpoint we are looking good. we would like rai not likely. >> reporter: the district has

an idea for saving some of the water that would pour over the spillway. there is a small three foot deep notch cut into the spillway as a flood control device. the district wants to build a movable gate that would slide up to block the notch. that one small change could potentially save 10% of the lake's capacity. >> we think that putting this gate in what was otherwise a notch on purpose will help both water supply and flood control. >> reporter: williams says climate change has altered what we can expect in the way of weather. >> we will get these extreme events. that could help with water supply and also cause a flooding problem. >> reporter: in discussing rainfall, water districts always use the word average. not normal. that is because no one really knows what normal

even means anymore. in marine county. john ramos, kpix5. former theranos executive sonny balwani was sentenced to 13 years. he was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy back in july. he spent six years as the chief operating officer and was convicted for duping investors out of millions and giving patients a false diagnosis. >> we respectfully disagree with the result in the case. we plan to appeal. he is a good person. he meant well. >> he was convicted of all 12 counts. he got two more years than former ceo and his one time girlfriend elizabeth holmes. last month, she was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. still to come, another pedestrian killed in the south bay. how one neighbor has been

another deadly crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle in san jose. this happened around 7:30 near the intersection of perrymont avenue and little orchard street. one woman who lives nearby say this intersection is dangerous, especially at night. >> i lived over here at old orchard mobile home 20 years and several people have been killed. i have been to the city. i talked to the city several times. many times about putting a crosswalk in here. it

is very dark. >> well, this is the 59th fatal crash and 31st death involving a pedestrian in san jose this year. well, san mateo still without a mayor tonight as the political power struggle in the city council drags on. and on, and on. the council reconvened tonight after a tense meeting that dragged on until 3:00 a.m. yesterday. two new members blocked the appointment of the city's mayor because they want to fill a vacant council seat first and say that would be the fair thing to do. but, council member lee says the city's policy to rotate the mayor ship says she should get the job. lee's supporters say the move to block her is a political power grab. dozens of san mateo residents weighed in tonight. >> i urge you not to bow to pressure. it is important to have a full council to make the decision of mayor and make that decision fairly. >> if you are not going to appoint councilmember lee as

afternoon. looks like it will be wet. maybe still dry in the santa clara valley. but the waves of rain will be moving through throughout rush hour. so plan on wet roads and breezy conditions. that rain moves off to the east and then we will be waiting for the next system to head our way. we won't have to wait very long. the rain to the north on friday will move in late friday night into saturday. the first round of rain adding up from a 10th of an inch to a quarter inch of rainfall. it is combined with the gustiest winds. a noticeable breeze by midday and the winds will gust up to the 20 to 30 miles per hour range as the heaviest rain is moving through and we are not done. more rain with lingering showers on sunday. futurecast from an inch to two inches of rainfall. that time frame with

two to four feet in the high sierra where a winter storm warning will be in effect. for now, it is te the 40s , down to 37 in santa rosa. a mix of 30s and 40s by tomorrow morning. as temperatures won't warm up much because of the clouds and the rain moving in. highs in the middle portion of the 50s . three to four degrees below normal. saturday, another alert day. the lingering showers on sunday. just be very flexible with outdoor plans. especially saturday, but sunday will be a challenge. lingering showers monday. then, we dry out for a couple of days tuesday and wednesday. temperatures will be below normal. straight ahead. hi. it's me. got more sports for you. but i promise you it's worth it. we are going to double up. we got one tom brady. and then, this afternoon, i hung out with the original tom brady senior.
