we begin with new concerns about whether there are additional classified documents that have not been returned to the government by former president trump. cbs news has learned at least two more documents marked classified were found at a storage facility in west palm beach, florida. it comes as the justice department investigates the possible mishandling of thousands of government documents including more than 300 marked classified found at trump's mar-a-lago estate. jarred hill is in new york with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. those newly discovered documents have been handed over to the fbi, but this is really the first indication that classified potentially sensitive materials might have been or still be at other trump properties. the justice department's hunt for classified government documents possibly removed from the white house by donald trump is picking up steam. a u.s. official confirmed to cbs news that representatives for the former president alerted the fbi that they recovered two items with classified markings at a storage facility in

florida. the official confirmed the items were inside a sealed box. >> the disregard and disdain for legal norms and rules simply cannot be accepted from anyone. no one is above the law. >> reporter: the new discovery comes just months after federal agents confiscated more than 300 classified documents at trump's mar-a-lago estate. >> yet another instance in which trump has failed to comply with lawful demand to return them. >> reporter: trump's legal team oversaw the latest search for documents at the direction of a federal judge to ensure they were properly complying with a subpoena issued earlier this year. the locations they examined included the president's golf club at bedminster, new jersey, trump tower in new york, and the storage facility in florida. >> the first question now is is the department of justice satisfied they have everything? if they don't, how are they going to get the rest? >> reporter: a spokesperson for the former president says,

quote, trump and his counsel continue to be cooperative and transparent despite the unprecedented illegal and unwarranted attacks against him. the doj recently appointed a special counsel, jack smith, to head up the investigation into the documents found at mar-a-lago and potentially other properties. back to you. >> jarred hill, thank you. there's been a new development in the investigation into the murders of four university of idaho students. police are asking for the public's help in finding the driver of a white hyundai elantra that was near the off-campus home where the students were found stabbed to death last month. investigators say the car's occupants could have critical information about the case. they do not know the license plate number, though. yesterday police began collecting the victims' personal belongings from the house to return to their families. and lights are slowly turning on for thousands of people in moore county, north carolina. it comes after a recent gun attack on two election

substations. now cbs news has obtained reports showing there's growing online chatter for domestic extremist groups celebrating the incident. some users are even advocating for further attacks on critical infrastructure sites across the u.s. mark strassmann reports from north carolina. >> reporter: with two substations in moore county raked by gunfire, more worrisome than ever, security around america's grid infrastructure. >> most concerningly is copycat attacks in the coming weeks against other elements of the grid. >> reporter: chris krebs, cbs news' cyber security expert, has watched threats against the grid proliferate like this one posted hours after the moore attack. so substations can be easily compromised, hm, tell me more. >> this attacker knew exactly where to hit, and they did it deliberately and did it multiple times, and they did it thoroughly. >> reporter: there's a playbook? >> there is absolutely a playbook.

>> reporter: the department of energy reports roughly 70 intentional attacks on electric facilities just this year. cbs news has confirmed recent physical attacks on substations in oregon and washington. and a series of specific threats in california from domestic violent extremists that will likely remain a threat to the electricity subsector through 2023. >> lights are back on -- >> reporter: back in moore county, the lights came on for the first time since saturday in sanaa nassar's furniture store. >> back in business. >> reporter: anthony parks has major losses in his ice-cream shop. tossed, $9,000 worth of spoiled dairy. >> everybody's still a little bit raw and upset and angry that this happened in the first place. >> reporter: to give you a sense wherever this case stand right now, the fbi put out another plea for tips. the governor announced a new $75,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

mark strassmann, cbs news, moore county, north carolina. texas is joining several other states in banning the use of tiktok on state government devices over cybersecurity concerns. governor greg abbott ordered the ban calling the commission-owned company a security threat. there have been questions about whether tiktok could share the vast amounts of data it collects with the chinese government. for years the u.s. intelligence community has had concerns about how tiktok data could be used by china. >> they also have the ability to collect data through it on users which can be used for traditional espionage operations. >> tiktok says security concerns are largely being fueled by misinformation about the company. it denies sharing data with the chinese government. virginia state police now say human error is to blame for the hiring of a man who later killed the grandparents and

mother of a 15-year-old girl he catfished on line. former administrator austin lee edwards was working as a county sheriff's deputy in virginia last month when he abducted the girl and killed her family in california. he died by suicide during a shoot-out with police. virginia state police say a background check did not reveal that edwards was detained for psychiatric evaluation after threatening to kill his father and harming himself in 2016. and overseas, china's government made a rare reversal of policy and is moving away from its strict zero-covid strategy to fight the pandemic. the move follows weeks of protests and the biggest challenge to the ruling authority in decades. mandatory testing will end immediately, and people will no longer have to show a negative test result to travel on public transportation. coming up, airtag stalking. the allegations by two women in a new lawsuit against apple. and later, a five-letter word for trend.

questioning. the store was evacuated after initial reports indicated an active shooter situation. "the new york times" says two women sued apple claiming their former partners stalked them using the company's airtag device. the proposed class-action suit accuses apple of not using safeguards to prevent stalkers from using airtags to track people. it seeks damages for u.s. owner re tracked by airtag or at d. the quarter-sized device is designed to track personal items like keys, wallets, or luggage, but it can also be hidden. lauren hughes says her ex-boyfriend used an airing too -- airtag to track her every move. >> i just literally dug around the outside edges of my car, and eventually found it in the wheel well. >> apple said it will not comment on ongoing litigation. in february it said that it would update the device to make it harder for people to use it

to track others without their knowledge. and the "boston globe" says the justice department report found widespread incompetence at the u.s. bureau of prisons led to the beating death of whitey bulger. the 89-year-old gangster and fbi informant was killed in his cell by other inmates just hours after he was transferred to a west virginia prison in 2018. according to the inspector general's report, inmates knew that bulger, who was in a wheelchair and had a heart condition, would be arriving. the report found no evidence of malicious intend by prison officials. still to come, coca-cola's christmas movies. we'll show you the new way the beverage company's inspiring the magic of christmas. magic of chr.

the recent spike in respiratory of over-the-counter medications nationwide including liquid acetaminophen and ibuprofen. distributors and pharmaceutical companies say that they're working hard to make sure that they have enough supply of fever-reducing -- reducers, rather, during cold and flu season. pharmaceutical company johnson & johnson says that it's working to maximize its production capacity. mortgage demand fell again. walmart's ceo is out with a warning, and mcdonald's is looking to beef up sales. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: the stock market closed lower wednesday with the s&p 500 on its fifth day of losses, and investors weighed concern over a possible recession and the prospect of sustained higher rates. the dow was up 1 point. nasdaq lost 56. s&p 500 dropped 7 points. mortgage demands have fallen

again despite the fact that mortgage rates have been decreasing. some homeowners are seeking to refinance, but not enough to offset the drop in demand. the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate decreased to 6.41 from 6.49%. the next big shift could come next week with the anticipated monthly read on inflation. walmart's ceo says store theft has been increasing at stores across the country, and if the problem continues it could lead to store closures and price hikes. walmart says the issue is worse than it has been historically. other big box retailers like target are dealing with similar upticks in theft. if one burger isn't enough, mcdonald's is letting customers pick up double cheeseburgers for just 50 cents for the next two days. usually the double costs $2.89. the deal is available from the store's smartphone app and only at participating locations and while supplies last. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning.
