weather day. plus, a community activist and organizer loses her life on the street of san jose. a landmark move today to protect marriage rights for same-sex couples. >> i in ryman-- i am ryan yamamoto. we will talk how you can skate with us all for free, for a good cause. the new starts now. >> think, rain is moving into the bay area, look up and you will see the clouds. that is why we are talking to chief meteorologist paul point >> rate on the way, we get excited about it. this won't be intense in terms of the amount but the timing has led us to declare whether day, it will be moving in across the bay area as we head into the peak of the afternoon and evening rest. some decent rainfall rates right now over most of sonoma county, along 101 from santa rosa northward. light rain indicated elsewhere in the

lighter shades of green. this will continue to move farther and farther to the south. we are still drawing san francisco for the moment , as we head into the rush hour we are likely to see those rain showers moving in. let's switch over to future contrast-- futurecast and track it. again, northbay is going to pick up the bulk of the heavy rainfall. a little bit on the roads, enough to cause some puddles. then we are going to be seeing things winding down as we had in early tomorrow morning, probably late tonight already. the wins, not that strong yet , those will also become noticeably stronger. 15 to 25 mile-per-hour gusts, adding another complication to the evening commute. we will take a look at the next storm system which will be more powerful. >> think you, now to a developing story, we have confirmed that the woman who was killed after being hit by a car last night was a respected community organizer. >> yes, san jose's mayor has

called her a tireless champion and a dear friend to many. healing grove said in a statement today that she died in the line of duty. she was actually preparing to help a group of people cross little orchard street when she stepped into the road and was hit by a car, she was the 61st traffic fatality and the 31st pedestrian death. these are record highs for as far back as the data goes. we have seen a number of those , little orchard street has no crosswalk and it is near a large shopping center. >> this is a tragedy. this year, 61 people have lost their lives on our city streets. need to be a collaborative effort. the police department can do about them selves, the

department of transportation can do it by themselves. >> they say predicting -- preventing these has been a challenge because of staffing shortages and fewer citations. we heard from one woman today who said that she put up large signs after the last traffic data there, saying how many people will die before the city takes action. >> while, an important community conversation will be at the forefront of that. the respect for marriage act is headed to the president's desk. the legislation gives federal protection for same-sex and interracial couples. it does not legalize same marriages but it does acknowledge that all states have to acknowledge this. they told us in a statement, we applaud today's milestone built on the tireless work of civil rights and lgbtq advocacy groups working to secure legal protection and recognition for future

direction of chef don noland. with volunteers cooking up the recipes that he comes up with that very morning. >> what i have available. >> in the pantry today, >> we take food that comes in large quantity, this is food that is difficult to distribute to people. we can take these large quantities, make them into something different, into something better, something more healthy that they want to eat. >> reporter: this is part of the food banks program called on the spot nutrition. it is a small snack, sometimes savory, sometimes we for all the people waiting in line to receive their grocery bags. >> people come up, it might be their first meal of the day. >> reporter: the only way that they can make it happen, with the help of plenty of

volunteers. >> food is so important to my family, we commune over food, everybody likes to cook. a way to share that love and appreciation with people who don't have it. that is what we do. >> she worked in the kitchen until it closed in 2019. >> i love to give back to the community, to help the community, to do something that felt hands on. this is a great place, great kitchen. >> unlikely, no professional cooking experience is necessary to volunteer. after a food safety course, volunteers learn what to do from chef don to get the job done. you have to be able to pick up the skills quick as the plane cow here is high. >> go ahead put it all in there. >> reporter: every single day in this kitchen alone each volunteer mix 100 meals for families . >> obviously the more volunteers we get the more meals that we can make and the more mouths we can feed.

>> reporter: in one week chef don cook's up these meals for at least 5000 people. >> just take ingredients that are local, that are in season, and i paired them together. that's it. >> although it is snack size, this makes a big difference to eliminate food waste and philip hungry stomachs. reporting in santa rosa, amanda starrantino, kp x news. >> it is such a good program that they have there, they deliver that on the spot nutrition program to sonoma county, lake county, they are also branching into other counties. that is a lot of meals for a lot of people because the need is there. >> they need is so great, you can help out with that and skate for free. right now you see all of these kids around us, they are skating for free, you can come down to the walnut

brady, is coming back to the bay area to play for the 49ers. we spoke with his dad ahead of the matchup. >> this is the volkswagen red and white report. >> the 49ers defense is hoping to do a a lot better job than father time has done to slow down tom brady. he made his first appearance back in 1994. >> tell me about tom brady, what are your strengths? >> my strengths, everybody tells me i have a pretty strong arm, which is good, i am pretty accurate. i think i need to work on my speed a little bit, hopefully that will come in time. >> san mateo will always be home for tommy. sunday will be his second time playing at levi stadium. it will be the first with his parents in attendance. >> he has had a lot of

important gains over all these years. thisis important l to make the playoffs, the 49ers th always, you know, born and raised a 49er fan. it is a real honor for us to be able to go down there and see him play. >> the big storybook scenario, he finishes up his career as a 49er, mentors the next, right ofinns. do you see a storybook scenario? >> no, i can't. it would have been a dream come true had played out here, you know, i have no idea what his plans are for next year. i don't know that he knows what his plans are for next year. that is too many steps down the road. we

have this sunday and then we have four or five more games after that. maybe he has eight or nine if we run through the super bowl. how about that? we sit here and talk about eight or nine weeks from now, about the implausibility that that might be. >> all right, time for the forecast, chief meteorologist. >> we are going to see some scattered showers , the heaviest rain is going to fall in between now and then. this round of rain moving in right now is not all that intense, it is just poorly timed as we approach rush-hour. the heaviest rain is falling over northbay. the heaviest rain is falling over much of sonoma county at the moment. the heaviest rain is moderate rainfall, it is enough to make the roads wet, it is not enough to cause any flooding issues on the roads but, it will certainly slow down traffic. let's switch over to the futurecast, we will see the widespread brain as we head through rush-hour and even past that . the showers are not

going to completely wind down until after tonight. we should dry out as we head toward tomorrow morning. in fact, as we look to the sunrise hours we will probably see some sunshine, the next round of rain is not far away. this one, adding up to monist-- modest totals. this is called the first alert day, the impact on rush-hour this evening. a 10th of an inch to a quarter inch for most of us, maybe a little bit more than that. we will see those winds picking up as we head through the rest of the afternoon, 20 to 30 mile-per-hour gust, most of that, 15 to 25 mile-per-hour range, potentially moving around a little bit, those are going to be dying down as we head toward's midnight tonight. we will spend tomorrow in between storm system, the next minority dropping in, lingering showers on sunday. this is a much stronger storm system. we will switch over, there is a lot going on here. we will stay dry through friday, maybe a chance of a passing shower, this will move , the first wave of that heavier rain sweeps across the bay area saturday

morning in the early afternoon. look for a break in the action, the next round of rain will be saturday evening and saturday night. these will continue adding up. there will be some gusty winds as well , more rain into sunday morning, seymour breaks in between the showers as we had farther into sunday. we are not going to completely dry out until midday on monday, adding up the rain, anywhere between 1 to 3 inches of total rainfall out of the next system which is associated with the low end atmospheric river, which also brings what-- much stronger winds. the wind speaking on saturday around mid day in the 30 to what he mile-per-hour range. that is a significant concern. they will pick up a lot of snow out of the latest forecast, to have to five of snow in the higher elevations. travel will be virtually impossible through the sierra as we go through that we can. right now, we are still waiting on the rain to

arrive in san francisco but it is getting closer, temperatures are in the 50s, exactly 50 in santa rosa where that is already falling. mostly 40s early tomorrow morning, tomorrow, highs will reach up into the mid-50s, a few degrees below average and the wayne-- rain and wind arrived, not as breezy, lingering showers, and then a three day break , tuesday, wednesday and thursday. temperatures will remain below average, only mid to low 50s by the middle of next week. we have been asking you to partner with us as we collect donations for the local food banks, businesses are also getting in on the action. recently i had a chance to meet asm l who made a donation. let's have a look back at that. >> second harvest of silicon valley, this is a big truck. 80 of these come and go out of this wonderful place to feed people, to put food on tables, it does not happen without great community partners. so we have this tech company, what

have you done, why do you do it? >> well, this is a global leader in technology, one of our biggest assets is people, next to contributing to the globe we also want to contribute to local communities . well, if the community s at' >> all right, $25,000, you can hand the check over here to my friend leslie. how does $25,000 help your people? >> this can provide more than 50,000 meals, every dollar donated results into meals. a recent survey, 93% of people said that they had had to make cuts to their food budget due to inflation. this will go a long way this holiday season. >> you know, we talk about numbers and statistics all the time, when you know that this is somebody that you are talking about and these dollars actually helped them, that is when it really lands. >> that's right, we cannot do it without support like this.

[ laughter ] >> reporter: that is a question, i don't know if i would push it that far, that is asking a lot. i am living my dream right now, being able to skate in the town that i live in come outside. it is just beautiful. to have eyes in california, thank goodness it has been so cold, it has been perfect out here for anybody who wants to skate, i'm telling you, i am having a blast. so is ryan yamamoto who came out to skate with me today. you can see all of the skaters, they are here for a good cause. >> you can join them for a nonperishable food or monetary contribution, only the first 150 people get in here to skate

in oakland, mayor elect join members of the community for a very important toy drive. this is the third year of the service employees international union has hosted the toy drive. over the course of the rent, they have distributed more than 10,000 toys to children in underserved communities. >> it has been a hard year, many families are struggling to pay rent, to pay bills. this will just liven up the holidays and really give our kids some hope. >> you can get involved, this will continue from nine a.m. to five a.m. at 100 oak street.
