it played out on a tarmac at an airport in the united arab emirates. here in the u.s., griner's hometown of houston lit up its city hall in red, white, and blue to celebrate her release. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a lot of excitement over this one. the first stop, though, for brittney griner is san antonio for a medical evaluation at a hospital there. standard procedure in situations like this. meanwhile, today we're learning more about the work that went into getting griner out of russian custody and why another american had to stay behind. the plane carrying brittney griner is expected to land in san antonio, capping the months' long campaign to free her from russian detention. >> what's your mood? >> happy. >> reporter: this video is from russian state media. it shows the wnba star leaving a russian penal colony before the controversial prisoner swap with convicted russian arms dealer

custody, some republicans on capitol hill are criticizing the deal that was brokered to get her home in exchange freeing someone known as the "merchant of death." back to you. >> indeed. thank you very much. so police in moscow, idaho, have released new video in the hopes that it will help solve the murders of four university of idaho students. the video shows police talking with people suspected of underage drinking, the same morning the four students were killed in an off-campus house last month. authorities say the video does not have anything to do with the murders, and anyone in the video has been cleared. they hope that someone might something that might be out of place. meanwhile, police are still wanting to speak to the occupants of a white hyundai elantra with an unknown license plate. the car was near the home where the students were killed. and some welcome relief for the pain that we have been feeling at the pump. gas prices are continuing to drop. they're now lower than they were

one year ago. the national average is $3.33 per gallon. that's compared to $3.34 this time last year. despite the falling fuel costs, though, americans are still being squeezed by inflation. kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: how much are you saving with gas prices down? >> oh, that's a pretty penny. pretty good penny. >> reporter: after reaching an all-time high of $5.02 this summer, the average cost of a gallon of gas across the country is down nearly 35% and is cheaper than it was a year ago. where do you think they settle? >> i think below $3 could be the floor, conceivably if everything goes well. the national average could drop under $3 and spend time in the upper twos. >> reporter: while plunging gas prices have given americans some relief, they are still facing stubbornly high inflation, up 7.7% over the last year. prices for groceries, rent, and household energy, all remain high. the federal reserve has raised interest rates six times this

year trying to slow spending and tame soaring prices. treasury secretary janet yellen told "cbs evening news" anchor norah o'donnell for "60 minutes" the battle to curb inflation >> reporter: what is 2023 going to look like for the average consumer? >> so i believe inflation will be lower. i am very hopeful that the labor market will remain quite healthy so that people can feel good about their finances and their personal economic situation. >> reporter: gas buddy estimates the average american is saving about $80 a month at the pump compared to when gas prices were at their peak over the summer. and if prices hit $3 a gallon, those savings will jump to about $100 a month. kris van cleave, cbs news, atlanta. the justice department has reportedly asked a federal judge to hold donald trump's office in

contempt, that's according to "the washington post," citing people familiar with the matter, the "post" says it's for failure to comply with a subpoena to return all classified documents in the former president's possession. prosecutors are investigating whether trump broke the law by keeping government records including classified documents after leaving office. the justice department declined to comment on the report. and the house passed bipartisan legislation ensuring federal protection for same sex and interracial marriage. in one of her final acts as speaker, nancy pelosi paused and became emotional when she read the vote tally yesterday. >> the yeas are 258. the nays are 169, present one. the motion is adopted. [ cheers ] >> the bill requires states to recognize legal marriages regardless of a couple's sex, race, or ethnicity. the senate passed the bill last week with 12 republicans voting

>> that's a spacex falcon 9 rocket blasting off carrying a competitor's internet satellites. the rocket carrying 40 mini satellites for a british company launched last night from florida's kennedy space center. the one web company stopped relying on russia to launch its satellites after the invasion of ukraine. why twitter might move headquarters out of san francisco, and the results of a house investigation into the commanders were released. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports a house committee slammed the nfl and washington commanders' owner daniel snyder for lack of cooperation in its investigation of the team's toxic work environment. the house oversight committee reported that snyder was part of a culture of sexual misconduct and interfered with the investigation by intimidating witnesses. it also said that the league buried the findings of its own earlier independent investigation. attorneys for the commanders and snyder say the committee's work was politically motivated.

"the new york times" says after 65 years, the identity of the boy in the box has been revealed. the body of the then-unidentified 4-year-old boy was found in a cardboard box in philadelphia in 1957. the child was known as the boy in the box in what has become the city's oldest unsolved murder. yesterday, police said dna and other testing helped identify the boy as joseph augustus zarelli. >> this announcement only closes one chapter in this little boy's story while opening up a new one. this is still an active homicide investigation, and we still need the public's help in filling in this child's life's story. >> investigators said they hope publicizing the boy's name will help identify his killer. the boy's parents have died, but he has living siblings. and the "new york post" says elon musk could move twitter's headquarters from san francisco after the city's mattress probe inspections is investigating

york times" staged a 24-hour walkout yesterday. more than 1,100 union employees protested the more than year-long negotiations between management and the union that have failed to reach an agreement on pay increases, benefits, and work flexibility. the executive editor of the "times" says negotiations are not at an impasse. unemployment numbers increased modestly. more people are swiping their debit cards this holiday season, and when to ship your holiday gifts so they arrive on time. dan lieberman has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed higher thursday breaking a five-day losing streak with investors seeing the rise in jobless claims as a sign the pace of interest rate hikes could slow down soon. the tension remains focused on next week's federal reserve policy meeting. the dow was up 183. nasdaq gained 124. s&p 500 added 29 points. unemployment filings rose slightly last week, a sign the labor market remains tight despite layoffs and broader

economic uncertainty and fears about a looming recession. initial jobless claims rose by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 230,000 last month according to the labor department. more holiday shoppers are looking to debit cards. the national retail federation survey found 43% of shoppers plan to make holiday purchases with debit. a larger number of americans are trying to avoid going into debt making too many credit card purchases this year. 38% still say they will use credit cards, but it's the smallest share since 2015. worried about getting your holiday gifts out in time? you should hurry up. u.p.s., fedex, and the u.s. postal service posted their holiday shipping deadlines, and they are a day earlier this year with christmas falling on a sunday. for usps you'll need to ship three days earlier than last year to meet the ground shipping delivery cutoff. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this friday morning.
