atmospheric river. it could be a one or two on the scale. either way it indicates mostly beneficial effects. the outside chance of some hazardous conditions and one of those we always monitor is the possibility of minor flooding. the weather prediction center has outlined it for excessive rainfall which means widespread flooding is likely to be a concern but there could be some minor creek flooding and street flooding. watch for standing water on the sides of roads and flooded intersections while the heavy rain moves through. it will be windy. we will track the rain and wind coming up . this weekends rain will be great for our reservoirs. valley water is working to clear up creeks and streams so they can flow freely. you can pick up sandbags at valley water.org . it is good to keep in mind, we are still in a drought. >> the reservoirs are still very low . it is extremely important to keep in mind that it will help but it is still

important to conserve water. >> they remind you last year we saw a strong season before dried up in january. some mask mandates are making a comeback in alameda county. the county move from the low covid-19 level back to medium according to state guidance, that means masks are required in high risk settings like homeless shelters, warming centers. the alameda county food bank we were asked to wear a mask there. we are starting to see an uptick in the hospitals in the united states are more than half full than they have been with the pandemic. more than 80% of hospital beds are occupied coheres a bit of a change, only a fraction of those are coded patients. flu and rsv are the reason. the cdc says the rate of flu hospitalizations and death has skyrocketed in the past week. that adds to the problem of widespread medical

simple as sweeping the floor can be a problem for russ davidson to go for safety the retired nurse detective often wears a bike helmet around the house. he had to tear out his front lawn because he could not operate his mower anymore . it started in 2018 when his coworkers noticed something odd happening. >> they could see the droop and hear the slur in my voice. they could see my balance was off. >> he was having a stroke over the next few years he regained his speech but it left him in a constant state of fatigue. he had to give up his volunteer job at the sonoma county behavioral health facility . it would have been easy to fall into self-pity , that is not a path he normally takes. >> about service . it is in my dna. >> reporter: it was that dna that brought him to the redwood empire food bank in sonoma county. at this weekly giveaway, people lined up down the street to get boxes of

surplus food donated by local grocery stores. it helps families put food on the table. the program coordinator says it also helps the volunteers like russ forget their own problems for a while. >> you do not have a chance to think about what is going on with yourself. what is going on in your life ago you just think about others. >> reporter: she says russ is usually the first to arrive in the last to leave her go because it only last two to three hours it is something he can handle. >> we all bring our strengths and limitations . for me what it does, it gives me confidence back . it enables me to serve the public once again, which is something that i have made a life out of doing. >> they are sweethearts . they take their time to volunteer and do this. if i could i would be out here helping.

>> reporter: as appreciative the people may be to get the food, most have no idea how difficult it can be for russ to be out here. >> after a couple of hours how are you feeling? >> fatigue. but it is a good fatigue . it is tired but good tired. >> reporter: that is the secret he has discovered that the best way to take your mind off your own problems is to focus on the needs of others. >> it gives me the sense that i'm helping somebody that is just a little less fortunate. i am not na÷ve, if that stroke had taken a different turn, i could easily be enough food line. >> reporter: even after all he has been through, this job has convinced russ that he is a lucky guy after all. >> i can do it . i can do it without sitting down . i can do it without dwelling on the fatigue. it really is a good tired. they get something out of it. everybody wins.

>> beautiful story. russ says he volunteers about two days a week at several sites in the county. he says he is encouraged that some of his physical stamina is slowly starting to come back. we wish you greater speed and fortitude in your life and congratulations on your service. earlier this week we went to the alameda county community food bank to bring you another story of those helping. >> we are following covid protocol here at the alameda county food bank . we want to keep everyone safe and healthy and makes her the meal is going where it needs to go. why are you doing what you are doing? >> one of the things that we do is really focus on building resilient communities and putting food on people's tables is important. it is important for nutrition and overall health . it really helps the

entire body to make sure that we have good food on the table. >> so many good employees are part of this. how does that change the work culture? >> it is so heartwarming to see so many employees out there volunteering and giving . we are so proud to support what our employees do. we give them 16 hours time off to volunteer. we also match. this year we had thousands of donations just from employees. >> fantastic. $100,000 , mike, how will this help people? >> it will help enormously . all of this food that you see behind this is farm fresh. and they purchased all of that. that is going to help to buy all of that and we will send it out to the community partners that we have in the county doing the hard work. thank you very much for that. >> so do we at channel 5. we

for home sales but this is the coldest winter ever in terms of how many homes are being sold. >> reporter: she is the chief economist for redfin. the market is now more favorable for buyers with higher interest rate it is harder to get in the driver seat. >> buyers are facing less competition, homes are taking longer to sell, they are selling below their list price for all of this things are more positive for buyers than earlier this year . when you look at how expensive it is to buy home, it is hard to feel like buyers are better off now than they were earlier. >> the market is what it is. >> reporter: he is not in a hurry to sell and he is glad that is the case. his advice to anyone considering selling, manager expectations. >> if they wait and they can, they should go if they cannot wait, their expectation needs to be more realistic and you

have to have value to offer. >> reporter: on an individual level he would like to get the right offer. big picture -- >> he hopes the housing market will recover and he hopes the interest from the fed will not grow so fast and so high and hope it will come down. >> reporter: redfin's chief economist says they are forecasting home sales will decline to some of the lowest levels we have seen since the great recession as a result of the high interest rate. let's take a look at first alert weather with paul hagan. >> tomorrow is going to be a mess. we will be tracking heavy rain and strong wind . minor flooding will be possible, standing water on the side of the roads . also tree damage and power outage because of the gusty wind and the rain will continue saturday night, sunday into sunday night for we

snow starts flying and it will add up to a lot, too-five feet of snow, treacherous, basically impossible travel conditions with gusty winds . beautiful view ahead of the storm as we look downtown . temperatures are mostly in the 50s , exactly 50 right now in santa rosa . temperatures tonight with the clouds moving in and staying in the 40s . it will be breezy tomorrow with the wind out of the south . high temperatures will climb to the upper 50s and close to 60 . it will not feel that warm because it will be wet and windy. first alert data tomorrow gives way to more rain just without the threat of wind damage . then we dry out for a few days . it will be chilly monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week . thursday and friday bring the potential for additional shower activity, vast uncertainty . take that with a grain of salt ago we will keep an eye on that and once we get this one in the rearview mirror. >> the 49ers have a rookie
