at 11:00, you're going to need the boots, the jackets, the umbrella. get it all because the rain is coming back and that means snow too up in the sierra. hi, i'm sara donchey. we have made it to the end of the workweek. thank goodness. but i hope you're ready for the rain. not only that, but the storm is bringing wind and cold with it. paul heggen is here off the top to kick things off for us. tomorrow a first alert weather day. so when does the rain actually start? >> for the north bay within the next couple of hours. in fact we're starting to see a few sprinkles hitting the ground north of the golden gate. but the bulk of the heavier rain is further up to the north. that'll come surging down towards the bay area as we head through the rest of tonight. so we will switch over to futurecast and take you through tomorrow morning. we'll be tracking that rain, the steadier heavier rainmaking its way into the north bay after

midnight. so you've got a few more hours to go. but that will make its way down towards san francisco by about 6:00, 7:00. the first wave of heavy rain will be accompanied by very gusty winds. this isn't going to last all day. there is going to be an eastward push to heavier rain, but more waves are going to follow it up. all of this is associated with an atmospheric river an ar2 on the 1-5 scale, which means it's a weak atmospheric river. but on that level of the scale, we're looking at yes, beneficial rainfall for the still rain starved bay area despite some recent rain events. but it could be hazardous specifically in terms of the gusty winds up to 45 miles an hour. but also the potential for too much rain in a short amount of time when those waves come through of heavier rainfall. it's a marginal risk of excessive rainfall according to the weather prediction center. what that means is while widespread flooding isn't anticipated, we could see some minor flooding. that means standing water on the side of the roads and flooded intersections. we'll have to watch the creeks to make sure they stay in their

banks. don't be surprised if you hear a couple of rumbles of thunder especially through saturday. i don't think we'll hear as much of that on sunday, but remains possible. we'll take a look at the entire forecast through the duration of the storm system coming up in just a few minutes. >> paul has been busy today, let's just say that. so if you're not up in the mountains, it's too late to go. at least that's what the national weather service is telling people tonight. here is what i-80 looks like right now heading to tahoe. things are only going to get worse as we head into the weekend. and from highway patrols to ski patrols, it's been all hands on deck trying to get ready. a winter wonderland is coming to the sierra. for cal trans it means it's time to get to work. >> it's a massive operation as we have hundreds of maintenance employees that are trained. >> reporter: cal trans has been working around the clock to prepare for this major winter storm with hundreds of pieces of equipment staged along 80 and 50. plows, snow blowers, emergency vehicles. >> i did try to beat it, but came in earlier than i hoped.

>> reporter: chp has been trying to prepare too. their focus will be guiding semis over the icy roads and trying to get drivers to slow down as much as possible while the roads are still open. >> that's why we're telling people not to travel unless they absolutely have to. all it takes is one spinout and things could get chaotic. drive safe and pay attention to your surroundings. >> reporter: a ton of snow is welcome news for skiers and snowboarders that even they have to be extra careful. staff is warning people to ski or snowboard with the partner instead of going at it alone. they plan to patrol all weekend to make sure the terrain are safe. >> it will be powder town up here. starting tomorrow, we've got a lot of snow coming through. i mean we've seen the reports anywhere from 24 inches over 36 inches. it's going to be a big win. >> reporter: it's hard to imagine these mountain sides were bone dry just weeks ago, but the storm could set the resorts up not just for the month, but the entire season. stay with us once the storm

moves in for anymore weather updates here on kpix 5. streaming on cbs news bay area, and always online at kpix.com. well look at this. this got a lot of attention in the east bay tonight. contra costa county said they got a lot of calls about a fire from the martinez refinery company, but it was actually just flaring, intense flaring, however. flaring is a safety mechanism that's meant to release excess pressure build up. the refinery says it is working to resolve an equipment issue that prompted that flaring. well the town of oakley has had a difficult year. 24-year-old alexis gabe went missing there back in january. there was an all-out search for her and it wouldn't be for another eight months that her remains were found. gabe's family and the family she left behind. andrea nakano was in oakley with her family. >> reporter: the gabe family was surrounded by many family members who helped search for

alexis. this vigil was just one step of the healing process, but a step the family really hasn't been able to take as they seek justice for their loved one. >> she was my best friend. . i miss her every day. >> reporter: on a cold friday night, the family was comforted by the hundreds that gathered at the vigil for alexis gabe. >> it's been really hard for us. but what gives us comfort is the love and support from this community. >> reporter: the oakley woman disappeared in january of this year after an exhaustive search. her partial remains were found in amador county just about a month ago. >> when we went to the place where they found her remains, it was very heartbreaking. it was -- my wife and i broke down when we saw all those flags. and you know what those flags

mean, right? and that is where parts of her were found. >> reporter: while the gay family now has some of the answers they've been searching for since alexis disappeared, they're still not able to find the closure to start the healing process. >> people are telling us to move on. i said no, there is no moving on. losing a child is, there is just no moving on. >> reporter: many community members spoke at the vigil sharing memories and offering prayers and condolences to the family. >> it's been hard. you know, i cried with the family. it's hard to talk about it. there is no words, you know, to comfort the family. >> reporter: while the oakley police department says this case is now officially closed, the gabe family is searching for the rest of their daughter's remains. they also believe the suspect in this case had help covering up his crime. >> we're not going to give up. we're going to keep fighting until we get that justice. >> reporter: the suspect, marshall jones, was an

ex-boyfriend of alexis gabe. he was charged with murder, but was shot and killed as officers tried to make an arrest in kent, washington. in oakley andrea nakano kpix 5. the daughter of house speaker nancy pelosi and paul pelosi said her father was left scared by the attack inside their san francisco home. film maker alexandria pelosi sat down with john dickerson ahead of the release of the new documentary she made about her mother. as for how her father is doing, she said the intruder who attacked him with a hammer did some emotional damage too. >> how is your dad doing now? >> he's getting better every day. thank you for asking. the scars are healing. i mean the scars are healing, but i think the emotional scars are -- i don't know if those ever heal. i mean that's tough. it's really tough. i don't think it's okay for an 82-year-old man to be attacked in his home in the middle of the night because of whatever his wife does for work. >> you can watch the full

interview with alexander pelosi on sunday morning right here on kpix. the covid surge here, it presses on. 140 from a month ago. hospitalizations are around 50%. all of those are concerns as flu and r sv cases are also going up. alameda county just moved from the cdc's low covid transmission level back up to medium. now according to state guidance, that means masks are once again required in high-risk settings like homeless shelters. alameda county is recommending masks in crowded indoor places. and there is a statewide push to get more people vaccinated before the holidays. vaccine clinics will be open tomorrow in seven different bay area counties. some will have food and toy giveaways. >> we thought it would be a wonderful treat to have the food trucks available for those who are getting vaccinated and their families. and also since it's the holidays. the fire departments have been incredible and providing

building inspectors in san francisco said they did find bedrooms inside twitter hq, two of them. james clayton from the bbc obtained these photos of some rooms in the eighth floor of that building that had been converted into sleeping quarters. but for now, san francisco's department of building inspection says further investigation is still required. the inspection didn't sit right with elon musk directing this tweet to mayor london breed. if san francisco attacks companies providing beds for tired employees instead of making sure kids are safe from fentanyl, where are your priorities? musk referring to the recent incident where a baby ingested fentanyl at a san francisco playground. 48,000 student workers across all university of california campuses have been on strike for more than a month now. today, they might have reached a pivotal stage in trying to find a solution. the university entered into private mediation with the striking student workers. but as da lin shows us, that still leaves students worried about what will happen during finals next week. >> reporter: this is the main

library on campus packed with students studying for their finals. they say it's been tough without the help of the graduate student instructors. it's quiet in this large room filled with students preparing for their final examines. junior has been getting ready for her math finals. >> reporter: her large classes have several hundred students, so she relies on the smaller discussions, taught by the graduate student instructors or gsis to understand the lectures. but the strike canceled those discussions for the last four weeks. her finals are being affected as will. >> two of my things are online. shifted to open note, but because of that, they're more difficult. >> good luck on your finals. >> reporter: students tell us some professors have canceled finals because they worry they don't have enough proctors.

ucla asked volunteers to be volunteer. students organized the sign up. >> by filling out these applications with false applications. what we're hoping to do is to send a message to the university that students are standing with their instructors. >> reporter: sophomore tiffany mahr is practicing for the final in her music course. but she is more concerned about her math class, which has about 1,000 students. the professor is moving forward with the exam. >> even though the department may or may not give proctors to administer the exam. he'd be the one to grade out plus the families, which is crazy. i'm not sure if he has enough time to be doing that. >> reporter: they support their gsis. their labor union says many gsis make around $ 24,000 a year. >> the school did give out an announcement saying if you do have financial aid that you need your grades for, you can

ask your professors to do that, to give you your grades in advance. but other that. we're not going to get our grades any time soon. >> reporter: the students say it is too late for the finals next week, but they hope the gsis will be back to work next semester. >> we're hoping it concludes soon and the gsis can get what they want. >> reporter: a university spokesperson believes they have enough proctors to make sure the finals will be okay. at uc berkeley i'm da lin kpix 5. okay, what you don't know as a viewer about when it rains is that behind the scenes, paul is accosted by every person who works in this building saying when is it going to rain? when does it stop? >> if only i were on tv, you guys, talking about this on a regular basis. >> we're working on the show. >> sending out e-mails about it and all that stuff. let's get into the details. it's going to rain. it's going to happen later on tonight and tomorrow morning. waves of rain will be with us on sunday. bringing the

heavier rain and strong winds especially on saturday, but the rain is going to continue off and on sunday before we finally start to dry out on monday. just in the beginning stages of this for now. the rain is primarily to the north, a couple of sprinkles making their way to sonoma county. track this thing as we go through the weekend with a few showers giving way to steadier heavier rain. showing one batch of that moving through the santa cruz mountains while the bulk of the main area will be sliding in the north bay, but sweeps across the bay area, between about 6:00 a.m., we're not done. a little break in the heaviest rains. still to yield some off-on showers tomorrow afternoon. the next wave of rain will move in tomorrow evening. that'll move off to the east. a tiny break before more showers are here to start the day on sunday. that'll move off to the east. off and on showers, just in time for the

sunday afternoon, so bring your poncho with you. we will be tracking that last wave of rain just kind of pin wheeling overhead as the center of the storm system is going to be moving directly through. that's where we could hear some rumbles of thunder as well. things will be quieting down. sunday night and monday, we'll be drying things out adding it up. how much rain fell as we will compare it to what the forecast models are going to fall. the high end with some spots in the higher elevations picking up close to 3 to 4 inches of rain. now this is going to happen in waves, but the waves could result in localized flooding. mainly street flooding, overwhelming some standing water there. but the wind is also something to contend with. a wind advisory in effect about 45 minutes for now through 3:00 saturday afternoon. but gusts are up to 45 miles an hour. certainly strong enough to do some tree damage. just going to try to

move you out of the roads as well. one more warning that travel is very strongly discouraged. they're going to pick up 2 to 5 feet of snow. it's treacherous. almost impossible travel conditions when you factor in the wind gusts. do we wait for the rain? it's actually nice out there. temperatures in the lower half of the 50s. we're dropping to the 40s tomorrow morning. temperatures tomorrow don't matter a whole lot because it will be rainy and windy throughout the day. but here they are. upper 50s to around 60, which is normal for this time of the year. lingering rain on sunday. just without the very gusty winds that we're going to have primarily the gustier winds tomorrow overlapping with the heaviest rain. that'll be between 6:00 a.m. and noon. breezy through the rest of the day. it looks like a dry break on monday, tuesday, wednesday, but a lot of uncertainty in the extended data. need to focus on this storm system first, and then we'll take a look at what's
