homicides are due to gang conflihe also lamed the amount of guns in the streets. officers confiscated over 1300 guns this year. that is just the tip of the iceberg. take a drive down international boulevard. in late of denver, the police partment has staff in east oakland and south oakland, with more officers ntown to curb the violence. east oakland has the most shongs and killings, and the west oakland downtow area hregressed and seen a big jump in homicides this year. with the staffing shortage, only 699 officers have told the increased patrols are done through mandatory overtime, and pulling officers from other assignments to focus on gang suppression and gun violence. while the numbers are turning in the right direction, oakland is by far still the most violent city in the region. it has more homicides than san francisco and san jose much more populous .
