being warned this morning to prepare for dangerous blizzard-like conditions. heavy snow, freezing rain, powerful winds, and flooding are possible as the storm makes its way across the country. many parts of the south are bracing for severe weather as well including the chance of tornadoes. jarred hill is in new york with the very latest on all of this. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. we'r seeing officia c tg thiser riously. the department of public safety is calling it the we-are-not-kidding storm. >> when we opened the door, it was all snow. >> reporter: a winter storm has dumped snow across the sierra nevada is now making its way across the country. >> we're used to this, so we have lots of water, warm clothes in case we get stranded. >> reporter: in lake tahoe, snow

and wind brought down power lines, leaving thousands without elect electricity. >> we're also concerned about senior citizens not having heat. >> reporter: in utah a bus driver lost control and slid off the road on monday. at least 20 passengers were injured. crews in the great plains and midwest are prepared for the worst. in morgan county, colorado, the sheriff says forecast indicates conditions could get very dangerous very quickly. >> the national weather service has termed this storm as a life-threatening event with up to 50- to 60-mile-an-hour winds. >> reporter: that storm is expected to reach the northeast by the end of next week, which is still cleaning up from a dfferent weather system that dropped more than 9 inches of snow in parts, while causing delays and cancellations of thousands of flights. and, anne-marie, the national weather service warned there would be numerous widespread and impactful weather hazards in the heart of the country this week,

around winter hasn't even started yet. >> oh, jarred, don't remind me of that. >> barer of bad news, i know. >> that was jarred hill in new york. the former ceo of failed crypto platform ftx is expected to appear in a courtroom in the bahamas tomorrow. sam bankman-fried has criminal charges filed against him. the charges are supposed to be unsealed today. the bahamas will extradite him when the u.s. makes that request. bankman-fried has been under criminal investigation following the collapse of ftx last month. billions of dollars are unaccounted for and the company filed for bankruptcy. he had been scheduled to testify before a congressional committee today. a libyan man accused of making the bach that brought down pan am flight 103 in lockerbie, scotland, in 1988, appeared in federal court in washington. abu agila mohammad mas'ud refused to answer questions yesterday until his own attorney is retained. 259 people on board the plane were killed including 190 americans.

11 more were killed on the ground. the father of a 16-year-old girl who died in the terror attack spoke outside the courthouse. >> i feel somewhat relieved and rather surprised because it's been so long, but i'm really glad to see that our government has pursued this, and we are hopefully going to see not only some justice here, but perhaps more information about other people that were responsible for this. >> if convicted, mas'ud faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. border facilities in texas are being overwhelmed as thousands of migrants continue to surge into the u.s. from mexico. many from nicaragua crossed into el paso. it's being called one of the largest single crossings in west

texas in recent years. more arrivals are expected as a trump pandemic health order that blocked them at the border is set to expire next week. and the mystery of the disappearance of a college student in france is growing. 21-year-old ken deland jr. was studying at a school in the french alps. his parents say they haven't spoken to him in more than two weeks. fellow students reported him missing november 29th, prompting french officials to launch an investigation. the fbi has joined that search. and the state department is condemning iran for the public hanging of a man convicted of crimes during nationwide protests. the demonstrations began three months after a woman died while in the custody of iran's morality police. authorities hanged the 23-year-old man from a construction crane yesterday as a warning to others. he was convicted for allegedly stabbing to death two members of

a paramilitary force after reportedly becoming angry about security forces killing protesters. he's the second person linked to anti-government protests to be executed in less than a week. american scientists are expected to announce today that for the very first time they've successfully generated energy through nuclear fusion. as manuel bojorquez reports, the breakthrough could lead to a limitless source of clean energy. >> reporter: it's the stuff of science fiction movies. >> when we master this technology -- >> reporter: harnessing nuclear fusion, duplicating the process that powers the sun. ♪ >> reporter: scientists have been working on it since the 1950s. now a breakthrough at the national laboratory in livermore, california. >> they took 200 laser beams, some of the most powerful on the planet earth, converged that energy down to a pellet,

gold bond. champion your skin. the two largest pharmacy chains in the u.s. have agreed to huge settlements over opioids. cvs and walgreens say they will pay more than $10 billion to state and local governments to settle lawsuits. they were accused of helping to fuel the opioid crisis by failing to realize they were filling too many prescriptions. walmart's already agreed to a $3 billion settlement last month. virginia removed its last confederate document and there's an update on grant wahl. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "associated press" reports wahl's body was returned to the u.s. the 49-year-old had complained of respiratory problems earlier in the week and he was treated

at a hospital in qatar for possible bronchitis. the state department says an autopsy will be conducted, but there is no indication of foul play. the "richmond times-dispatch" says the last city-owned con get rat statue was removed. the statue of general a.p. hill was lifted from its base and taken away yesterday. richmond removed its other confederate monuments amid the racial protests that followed the killing of george floyd in 2020. the removal of hill was complicated because his re inte. they will continue to search today. and "the new york times" says decades after the central park jogger attack, new york city is naming a park gate in honor of the five men wrongly convicted. it be called the gate of the exonerated for the five black and latino teenagers who spent years in prison for the 1989 brutal attack and rape of a jogger.

appeal on the dispute brought by the states. it's unclear if the two cases will be consolidated. as of now, they've left the block on the program in place. and some lyft drivers may be eligible for bonus dollars. it could be expanded to other markets. lyft has said they want their fleet fully electric by 2030 and hopes the bonus works as an incentive. ticketmaster is in international hot water after hundreds of bad bunny fans were denied entry into the artist's concert this past weekend. ticketmaster said it was due to an unprecedented number of bought counterfeit tickets. behe says it was because of an overselling of tickets. he wants to see those get refunded or pay hefty fines. that is your cbs money watch report for tuesday. i'mer is rima mar sham, cbs news, washington.
