report, and what it could mean for interest rates. plus, a nuclear energy breakthrough, in livermore. but what is it actually meaning for clean energy? we'll break down the locations. furnaces will be running across the bay with temperatures dropping to the 20s and 30s. i am tracking frost advisories and freeze warnings in effect. good afternoon, i am elizabeth cook. with bay area food banks facing demand, volunteers are needed more now than ever before. we are introduced to a man who is making sure critical donations reach deserving families. >> walking out of this warehouse is a sign dominic figaro's day has already started. and the sun is not even up, yet. but, before starting his truck route, he
3:02 pm
has got to do compliance checks , but after checking his truck he is ready for his morning routes. >> all right, ready to go. >> dominic is a driver for the san francisco-marin food bank. he's been here for more than a year. truck driving is a skill, but his spirit keeps him going. >> the emotions that i feel when i see other people when i'm bringing them food. >> you see, dominic used to be a maintenance guy at an apartment building. he says he's used to fixing things. dominic is helping fix hunger for thousands of families. >> food brings people together on so many levels. and just to see that and be the person who is physically giving them the thing they need, it just feels amazing. >> just 1 of 65 deliveries a
3:03 pm
day for the food bank. it distributes mostly fruits and vegetables feeding 56,000 households per week. >> about 1500 cows . >> 1500 pounds, dropped off, but the need is necessary. as night turned into day, dominic is still at it. >> how are you feeling, man? >> this drop off is at the mission ymca, two pallets full of food, helping people like walter alvarez . he's also a volunteer. >> i come here, because food is so expensive nowadays. >> walter and dominic shared a moment. >> it's one thing to drop it off. these guys actually do all the footwork here. >> get up early in the morning, let's get this food. >> you heard dominic say it, himself. food brings us all together. >> i'm not the only one who feels that, like it's a real
3:04 pm
thing. >> their need, feeding dominic's mission one food delivery at a time. i'm just in angers, kpix 5. >> there is still time to volunteer or donate to our food for bay area families drive. just scan the ur code at the bottom of your screen or go to our website, kpix.com/give. for the fifth straight month, prices are slowing down. prices are still higher this year, but not as much as before. the bureau of labor statistics says prices jumped 7.7% in november compared to the previous year . the june peak was 9.1%. we've already seen this at gas prices, which have plummeted over the past month. the national average for a price of regular has dropped, $.53 per gallon. here in california, it dropped nearly a dollar. but, shelter is one category that continues to
3:05 pm
climb, which includes rent prices. tomorrow, the federal reserve is expected to, once again, increase interest rates, but not by as much as the past few months. the inflation report has not moved the needle watch on wall street much. the dow and s&p both went up. earlier today, president biden signed the respect for marriage act, ensuring that same-sex and interracial marriages will be recognized across state lines and guarantees them federal protection. it protects the tax exemptions of religious institutions, if they refuse to serve these individuals. >> racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, trans phobia, they are all connected , but the antidote to hate is love. this law and the love it defends strikes a blow at hate in all its forms. >> and while this is a big step guaranteeing protection, many critics say it does not go far enough to the act does not promise the right to marry, but
3:06 pm
rather protects existing marriages. san francisco police will not be authorized to use deadly force robots. the board of supervisors has just voted, 10-1, to formally reject that policy that would have granted officers the option to deploy lethal technology, in extreme circumstances. the mayor still has to sign it. >> simply put, this is one of the most impressive scientific feats of the 21st century. a scientific breakthrough, and clean energy research. for the first time, scientists at the bay area's lawrence livermore national laboratory have achieved net energy gain from an experimental fusion reactor. it's a crucial step in the pursuit of limitless zero carbon power. so, what does it mean for the future? the scientific community is buzzing about the possibilities. wilson walker spoke with the experts. >> two, one -- >> and of course, what fusion
3:07 pm
offers, right? the thing most people are excited about is this possibility of clean energy. >> if fusion is the energy holy grail lawrence livermore appears to have taken a step towards it. >> they use this large laser to create a system that produced energy by thermonuclear fusion, faster than it lost it. so, when you tickle the energy they put into the system they exceeded that by a significant margin. >> lee bernstein of uc berkeley knows those involved with the project and says the breakthrough goes beyond the energy possibilities, for example, the plasma created is not unlike the core of a star. >> this is a reusable platform to let us study the way that elements and energy are involved in stars and stellar interiors. so for astro
3:08 pm
nuclear physics, this is a big deal as well. i know it's not the one everybody is super interested in, but it does have this angle as well. >> more practical applications like power are years or decades down the road. >> you will have to bring the engineers in, and they are going to need to say had to make something like this work in the form of a power plant? >> but the science of fusion is moving ahead and is picking up speed. >> so in another year, 15 months, what will happen? i don't know. expect wilson walker, kpix 5. still ahead here on kpix 5, it took a week of fighting, but san mateo finally elects its new mayor. so i did it take this long? we'll explain. chilly temperatures tonight in most areas of the bay area. temperatures dip into

3:12 pm
lee would have been elected last week, but two new councilmembers blocked the nomination, they wanted to elect a fifth council member first. protesters and public commenters were vocal at last nigh's meeting, shaming those councilmembers they say violated the judicial process. ultimately they chose long-time community activist richard hedges, to fill that seat. he said diaz-nash, who fought to delay the appointment will become vice mayor. scientists today declared hawaii 's big island volcanoes have ceased erupting. the eruption from mauna loa, almost destroyed part of the big island's crucial highway. it stopped 1.7 miles away from it, wow! the associated earthquakes and volcanic activity has greatly diminished now that they are no longer active, but they will continue
3:13 pm
to monitor them for any signs of renewed activity. it was so fascinating. expect that was spectacular video, especially the nighttime video with fountains of lava. it looks like a special effect, it is liquid rock. >> it's interesting the way people there look at it, but it is scary, but also these are how the islands were formed. so it's growing, the island is getting bigger, so it's kind of a good thing. it's still scary but also spectacular. >> i am sure they are fine with it taking a break. we are getting a break from the rain for the next few days, which, you know, we definitely need more, hopefully we will find more down the line in december, but in the short per levels of the atmosphere which means a sinking air overhead, and that's the opposite direction the air needs to go to squeeze out moisture, so we will stay dry through the rest of the week, likely the weekend, which is fantastic for anyone who wants to head up to tahoe and take advantage of the fresh powder. which better travel conditions, now that road crews
