weather conditions. in louisiana, officials say that a young girl was killed and her mother is missing after a tornado touched down. there are tornado warnings and watches in effect throughout the per midwest all the way to the northern plains. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good mornin the tornadoes here, there's always concern about the overnight twisters being potentially more dangerous. people might be sleeping. they're harder to see and get away from in the dark. this morning the threat of severe weather continues across the country as daylight gives us a clearer look at the destruction that's been left behind. >> tornado! >> reporter: severe storms ripped through the south. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: spawning multiple tornadoes that damaged homes and businesses in texas, injuring at least five people. >> it's a disaster. but it's fixable. so this is nothing i've ever been through and nothing i want to go through again. >> reporter: twisters also tore through parts of oklahoma and u

power lines, and causing damage to homes and businesses. >> the roof is gone. you know, they always say that you hear a train coming -- this was a big train to come through here. >> reporter: further north, blizzard conditions in colorado and nebraska as well as freezing rain and snow in the dakotas shut down major highways. >> so if you're traveling this way, slow down. >> reporter: minnesota is under a blizzard warning with the forecast calling for up to a foot of snow in areas. >> each area is having a unique element when it comes to the storm. we're waiting for things to happen. crews are staying prepared. we're monitoring. >> reporter: since monday the storms have caused more than 10,000 flights to be delayed or canceled. and it's possible that some folks could be stuck in this for a while. the national weather service in minneapolis/st. paul said there could be snow, ice, and rain through friday. back to you. >> getting messy. jarred hill, thank you very much.

breaking overnight, ukraine says five buildings in the capital of kyiv were damaged in a drone attack. video shows smoke rising from a residential building on fire this morning. it happened in the central downtown district that is home to government offices. so far no casualties were reported. officials say air defense systems shot down iranian-made drones similar to those involved in earlier russian attacks in the country. the strikes come as the u.s. is set to provide ukraine with the most advanced air defense system. there's holiday cheer about the committee. inflation eased more than expected last month. consumer prices 7.1% compared to a year ago, slower than predicted. it was the fifth straight monthly decline. president biden called it welcome news but said inflation might not return to, quote, normal levels until the end of next year. and later today, the federal reserve is expected to raise its benchmark interest rate by half

a percentage point in its fight against inflation. now to the stunning downfall of the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange ftx. yesterday he was charged in what a federal prosecutor called one of the biggest frauds in american history. scott macfarlane reports. >> reporter: inside a heavily secured courthouse in the bahamas, 30-year-old sam bankman-fried arrested and disgraced, was denied bail and signaled he'd fight extradition to the u.s. >> this is one of the biggest financial frauds in american history. >> reporter: where the justice department charged bankman-fried with numerous financial crimes including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. his company, ftx, in the bahamas and promoted by top celebrities was worth $32 billion in january before a run on the company gutted it, leaving its founder with just more than $100,000. his customers lost $8 billion. this is one of the victims saying he's $2 million in the

hole. >> i'm pissed off about being scammed and losing money to a scam and a fraud. >> i don't think i committed fraud -- i don't think i committed fraud. >> reporter: two days before his arrest, bankman-fried was asked if he thought he'd be arrested. >> i don't think it i will be. >> reporter: he was scheduled to testify on capitol hill. instead the company's current ceo brought in to right the ship described a shockingly unsophisticated organization with no accountants and where expenses were approved by emoji. >> there was no sophistication whatsoever. there was an absence of any management. >> reporter: prosecutors say bankman-fried also violated federal campaign finance law using millions of dollars in customer funds on political donations for candidates of both parties, trying to influence the regulation of cryptocurrency. he faces a maximum of 115 areas in prison. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. facilities along the southern border are being stretched to the breaking point because of a new surge of

migrants entering the country. nancy cordes reports on why the numbers are expected to grow even larger in the coming peeks. -- coming weeks. >> reporter: the numbers have startled even longtime activists. 2,400 migrants attempting to cross the border near el paso on sunday alone. overwhelmed, the border patrol has been bussing refugees to blake barrows homeless shelter in el paso by the hundreds. >> we had to resort to turning people away. there was no place else to put them. if they come in with an infant, then we -- we find some space somewhere. >> reporter: on the floor if you have to. >> sure. >> reporter: even before the influx, encounters at the southern border were smashing records this year. those numbers are expected to spike even higher starting in just over a week when the order known as title 42 expires. designed to stem the spread of covid-19, title 42 has allowed

promising results in a preliminary study. it combines mrna technology used in covid vaccines and mercks keytruda immunotherapy. the companies said that a small study using the experimental vaccine on melanoma patients cut the risk of relapse or death significantly. a larger study is planned for next year, and the company's said they plan to test the combination in other types of cancers. "the new york times" says a massive fire burned down part of a new york city police department evidence center. boats sprayed water on the fire yesterday at the warehouse along the brooklyn waterfront. the facility housed dna evidence from unsolved crimes going back three decades. it also contained seized vehicles. >> what's stored here in particular is we have a lot of biological evidence that's here. we also e-bikes, motor vehicles, and we have a few historic vehicles, as well.

so we don't know the severity of the damage inside. >> eight people suffered minor injuries. officials say the fire might not be contained for days, and there's no word on a cause. and the "clarion ledger" reports on the death of mississippi state's innovative and influential head football coach mike leach. leach died monday following complications om a hrt condition. he was known for his air raid offense during his 21 seasons as a head coach, including the last three at mississippi state. the bulldogs defeated rival mississippi in leach's final game on thursday. -- oh -- on thanksgiving. the team is expected to play in the bowl game next month against illinois. mike leach was 61. still to come, celebrating john lewis. how the postal service plans to pay tribute to the late civil rights leader and congressman.

today marks ten years since a gunman opened fire at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, killing 26 people. 20 of them were schoolchildren a mori fthe ages of 6 and 7. school once stood. and ahead on "cbs mornings," we're going to hear from parents of victims in the sandy hook shooting athshootiisaiah marquez green, shares a note to his younger self about that day and losing his sister in the attack. united airlines has put in a massive order to upgrade its fleet, and if you own a ram pickup truck, you're going to want to listen to this. there's a recall. serena marshall has that and more in today's cbs "money watch" report.

>> reporter: the stock market closing out with gains thanks to a lower than expected inflation report. the consumer price index in at 7.1 for november as all eyes are on the fed meeting later today. the dow up 103 points, nasdaq up 113, and the s&p up 29. united airlines is upgrading its fleet and looking to expand, placing one of the biggest airline orders ever for twin aisle boeing 887 planes. also known as the dreamliner. the airline purchasing more than 100 with an option to purchase 100 more and delivery beginning in 2024. united said they plan to use the new plane to replace their aging 767 and 777. more than a million pickups sold in the u.s. are being recalled over tailgate issues. ram announcing 2019 through 2022 model year 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks have a latch that may be out of alignment leading to the tailgate not shutting completely which could lead to cargo falling out. notifications are expected to be sent to owners in january.
