us are disabled, we cannot work you know? old and broken. >> reporter: his neighbor did not want to be on camera but showed us a notice that was posted next to has been recently. a notice from the department of fish and wildlife says to vacate in 72 hours citing this area is only open from sunrise to sunset and there is no camping by an ecological reserve. on the other hand, this notice from the marine county sheriff's department says fencing work will be done by the residents are not required to move. residents says the county has been working with them to provide portable restrooms and josh collection services once a week. we are just trying to get along. they are going out of their way to help. >> reporter: his ultimate wishes to be able to move ave. >> we have nowhere else to go. what would we do? then where would we be? you know? we would be in a tent somewhere. you know? that is a step down. we are trying to go a step the other way.

are not the answer for everyone. we have seen it during the sweeps in oakland at the wood street camp and in san jose near columbus park. some campers end up moving back or somewhere nearby because they do not want the restrictions of a shelter or they do not have anywhere to put their stuff. this shows us how one shelter in berkeley has a very unorthodox way to get people through its doors by changing the entire experience. >> reporter: in a small tent in southwest berkeley, jamie is strumming his guitar. one of the few things he has left from his former life. >> living on the streets as . it is daily, physical torture that grinds a person down mentally and emotionally. >> in the last two years he has been in and out of shelters. >> reporter: that turned out to be another nightmare. >> they kick you out at 5:00 in the morning. you've got to take all of your stuff with you. >> reporter: then he stumbled

on a new, unconventional option that allows residents to pitch their tents in the middle of a warehouse. it is away from the elements and the danger of street life. >> i do not have to lug around a 40 or 50 or 60 pound backpack all day. >> reporter: it is a pilot program called horizon transitional village run by dorothy day house. it is a nonprofit servicing the homeless. robbie montoya is its executive director. >> after 43 years of working in social services , i had experienced so many things in the shelter system that do not work. >> reporter: the first thing she did was treat residents like adults. >> telling a 50-year-old homeless individual that they have to be in by 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening does not work. >> reporter: the second thing was to stop pretending she had all the answers. >> hey, good morning. we fe wewould want that? now whats >> reporter: she decided to think outside the tent. no

curfews, few restrictions and complete autonomy over their personal space. there is also on-site storage, a lounge area, and even a pool table. >> this public space is give people an opportunity to acclimate, again, at their own time into more of a social gathering. >> reporter: it seems to be working. one third of the resident s have been placed in permanent housing. almost all of them have the medical benefits. for jamie, it was the solution he had been seeking. >> finally a commonsense approach to working with people. >> reporter: the first round of participants is scheduled to move into a converted hotel by the end of the year when the lease for the warehouse and . the program has been so successful robbie is already looking for a more permanent location. >> you have to give people the freedom to make their own choices and to rise to the challenge.

>> reporter: helping people get back on their feet by putting a roof over their tent. sonoma county just approved $4 million in funding for short-term and long-term housing. san mateo county leaders also approved $2.4 million to keep shelters of rote and find services for the homeless. >> there is a huge homeless population that we do not see on the streets. they are in the car, they are on hard times they do not have mental issues or drug issues. they have just lost their job and it is very sad. i think those are the hidden homeless. >> heartbreaking story tonight. many people are shocked and saddened after hearing of the suicide of stephen "twitch" boss pay the 40-year-old professional dancer rose to fame on the show, "so you think you can dance". he was a dj on ellen. stephen boss had the nickname twitch because he just stopped moving. emotional

tributes and outpouring reaction is flooding social media. the posts are from family and friends. they are from fans. twitch shot himself in a los angeles hotel room yesterday. his wife allison issued a statement saying he was the backbone of their family and the best husband and father. those he worked with had this to say. >> he was a positive, shining ray of light. he walked in and he would light up a room with his positivity and his big personality. >> days before his suicide he was posting photos of his weddlove for his wife as they celebrated their ninth anniversary. news of his death comes at a time where health officials say there has been an alarming rise in firearm suicides. take note. if you or someone you know is struggling you can call or text 988. that is the national suicide in crisis hotline. it is available to the everyone. it is available 24 hours a day.

the man accused of attacking nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer in their san francisco home may have had other high-profile targets in mind as well. a san francisco police sergeant displayed the five pound hammer on the witness stand as he described taking david e pelosi home on october 28th. nancy pelosi was out of town at the time so investigators say he targeted her 82-year-old husband instead. the court also heard part of paul pelosi's 911 call that night.
