netflix in its premiere debut this week. i'm serena marshall, cbs it's thursday, december 15th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." deadly tornado outbreak. at least three are dead after a massive coast-to-coast storm barrels through the south. see the widespread destruction left behind. border crossings surge. migrant arrivals at the southern border hit a record high as a law that's been used to turn them away is about to expire. hear from migrants on their journey. pelosi assault testimony. the man accused of attacking paul pelosi appears in court. the other big names he was allegedly targeting. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green.

we begin with the monster storm that's moving across the u.s. and leaving severe damage in its wake and causing fears for what could be in store for the next few days. tornadoes ripped through the south where at least three people died in louisiana including a mother and her 8-year-old son. dozens more were hurt. one tornado pummelled parts of new orleans and the surrounding area. homes and businesses were destroyed across a vast region in what one official described as catastrophic damage. a tornado struck south of lafayette, heavily damaging a medical center there. and there are more than 20,000 several southern states. there's also a threat of more severe weather from north to south. tornado watches in effect for parts of the gulf coast. there are blizzard and winter storm warnings throughout the northern plains and midwest. heavy snow and freezing rain are forecast from the mid-atlantic through new england. well, the u.s. border facilities are facing what's being called an impending

humanitarian crisis amid a sharp increase in the number of migrants crossing over from mexico. it comes with next week's scheduled end of a trump-era pandemic law that's been used to turn migrants away. lilia luciano has more. >> reporter: migrants here in el paso face dangerous conditions with temperatures expected to drop below freezing. "the cold last night was brutal," said christopher, who was processed and released by authorities with his wife and two children. he slept outside a shelter in el paso, unsheltered. the city is under incredible strain, seeing an average of 2,500 crossings a day. >> people are going to ask you where can i go, where do i go? and to say -- i don't have a miss for you, all the places i know are all so full. >> reporter: for over four decades, ruben garcia has served migrants at enunciation house and says he's never seen el paso like this. the situation is only expected to get worse when title 42, a

pandemic-era law that the u.s. uses to turn migrants away, is set to expire. garcia says a humanitarian crisis here can only be prevented if the city, county, churches, and the federal government step up efforts to shelter thousands more. >> if title 42 gets lifted and those four entities are not operating at their max, you're going to be down here doing more stories with many, many more people sleeping out on the street in even colder weather. >> reporter: today we have heard from families who said they were fleeing political persecution who survived kidnappings along the way in mexico, and who are now here disoriented, cold, relying on the kindness of strangers to bring blankets and jackets. the local authorities and ngos fts helterd thate the federal gg that is something that tveme ha.

lilia luciano, cbs news, el paso, texas. there are new details about the attack on paul pelosi. the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi. a preliminary hearing was held of other prominent figures he tr >> reporter: good morning. at least one of those names is potentially surprising. in the hours of testimony, 911 audio and police body cam footage, a judge in california ordered paul pelosi's alleged attacker to stand trial. prosecutors in san francisco used 911 audio, police body cam video, and chilling sworn testimony to lay out their case against david depape, the man accused of attacking house speaker nancy pelosi's husband. a police officer showed the hammer that was allegedly used to break into the pelosi residence on october 28th and demonstrated how the suspect struck paul pelosi's head.

it comes after several states banned tiktok from state-owned devices. there's been growing concerns that the chinese company that owns tiktok could pass personal data onto china's government and use it to spy on americans. many federal agencies already ban tiktok from government devices. the bill now heads to the house. and tributes are coming in following the death of stephen "twitch" boss. he rose to fame on the tv show "so you think you can dance" and as a dancing dj on "the ellen degeneres show." jeff pegues reports on how he's being remembered. ♪ >> reporter: he was known for his dance moves on the "ellen" show. growing up in alabama, stephen boss was given the nickname twitch because he never stopped moving. ♪ raeverything seemed peecers ele

morocco is the first african team to ever reach the fi wtry to bomthe rst nackback world cups in 60 years when it goes up against argentina and lionel messi on sunday. a city in missouri approved a four-day school week for kids, and how a smartphone reached out to rescuers. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cnet reports an iphone 14 alerted first responders to a california highway crash. apple says a car with two people inside went off the side of a mountain tuesday in the angeles national forest. the car fell about 300 feet into a canyon. there was no cell service, but a passenger's iphone detected the crash through sensors. the phone alerted authorities by sending an emergency sos via satellite to the sheriff's department. rescuers used a helicopter, pulled the people inside the car to safety. they were not seriously hurt.

"the washington post" says georgia's secretary of state called on the state legislature to end runoffs for general elections. republican brad raffenge cited the added stress that runoff elections puts on counties and voters and also said georgia is one of the only states that always seems to have a runoff. it comes after a high-profile u.s. senate race was forced into runoffs there year and in 2020. a runoff is held if a candidate does not receive 50% of the vote. and the "kansas city star" says independence, missouri, became the largest school district in the state to adopt a four-day week. the school board voted 6-1 to transition to a four-day week next fall. it's making the change to try ta ongoing worker shortages. those in favor say that it will benefit staff and student mental health. but others say it will impact student achievement and families that can't afford childcare. still to come, royal fans get ready to stream.
