with covid cases on the rise again, the steps oakland is taking to try and slow the holiday surge, and the one food bank volunteer paying it forward herself after getting help from strange would be circumstances. good afternoon, i am reed cowan. a tragedy that shocked the area in oakland, last november , the death of jasper wu. >> that afternoon, two groups were involved in a rolling gunfight. three living suspects, trevor green, ivory bivins, and johnny jackson. the da says they were all members of rival street gangs from san francisco. they now face multiple felony charges including murder and firing into an occupied vehicle. >> this is the worst nightmare and outcome of gun violence , and especially gang gun violence. that innocent people

leaders to keep the doors open. we are waiting to hear if the detail on the deal has worked out. many we are told end up moving back to these encampments, because they don't want the restrictions of a shelter or not having any place to put their belongings. one shelter in berkeley has found a different way to get people through their doors. >> in a small tent in southwest berkeley, jamie mori is strumming his guitar , one of the few things he has left from his former life. >> living on the streets is hell. it's daily physical torture that grinds down a person physically and mentally. >> for the last two years he's been in and out of shelters, and that turned out to be a whole other nightmare. >> the kick you out at 5:00 in the morning, and you have to take all your stuff with you.

>> then he stumbled on a new conventional option that allows residents to pitch their tents in the middle of a warehouse. and away from the elements and the danger of street life. >> i don't have to lug around a 60 pound backpack all day . is beckett's pilot program called horizon transitional village, run by dorothy day house him a nonprofit servicing the homeless. robbie montoya is its executive director. >> after 43 years of working in social services i had experienced so many things in the shelter system that don't work. >> the first thing she did was treat residents like adults. >> telling you 50-year-old homeless individual that they have to be in by 8:00 or 9:00 in the evening does not work. >> a second thing was to stop pretending she had all the answers. >> we cannot assume we know what people want . just

because we feel we would want that. >> she decided to think outside the tent. no curfews, fewer restrictions, and complete autonomy over their personal space.eris also on-site storage my lounge area, and even a pool table. >> this open space gives people an opportunity to acclimate to their own time into more of a social gathering. >> it seems to be working. a third of residents have been placed in permanent housing, almost all of them have got medical benefits. for jamie, it was the solution he had been seeking. >> the first round of participants is scheduled to move into a convertible hotel . it has been so successful robbie is already looking for a more permanent location.

for those at higher risk of developing severe illness . cities will provide masks when you go in the front door if you don't have one. you know with less than two weeks until christmas, bay area food banks are working overtime to meet the needs of families. one woman met with our elizabeth cook now returning the kindness total strangers once gave to her. >> lady augustine volunteers at this neighborhood pantry at st. peter's in the mission every week. no matter what. >> because i see how important it is for people to get food. so that's why i started doing it. >> she does it all from unpacking boxes to checking people in. >> you get to see people every friday. so you are expecting

to see them again and see how they are doing. it is mostly by the people. >> relationships she keeps close to her heart, because nine years ago, she was in the same line waiting to get food after her family immigrated from guatemala. >> it was very hard experience, everything new, new language, new culture. new food even. it was totally different. >> her dad was making less than minimum wage, and in the beginning, money was tight. >> we didn't have a lot of money to support a family, succumbing to the pantry and getting food, we were saving like $300 per week, and we were eating healthy with all the fruits and vegetables and meat . it was a lifesaver at that time. we met a lot of people because of the pantry. we used

it to come here, and the same people would come every friday, so like, it was good to know someone , like we see them once a week , and we have become friends. >> the demand for food assistance has skyrocketed, fueled by the pandemic and steep prices at the market. >> let me tell a story. last week i went to a specific grocery store, and i was looking for lettuce. i was shocked when i knew that lettuce was $10, just a little one. >> ladies help at the pantry is priceless, he calls her his knees, because to him she is like family. >> she brings in a special expertise, she is well versed in everything we do hear the pantry, and she's very dependable , if someone is unavailable, she is quick to step in. >> she is pursuing a career in
