11:01 pm
these days means a heavy police presence including some officers that sfpd says are secretly staking out stores all around san francisco. play clothes officers have been working to make shoppers and retailers safer during the holidays. >> we have a perception among people in this city that there are no consequences. one that they won't be caught when they conduct themselves in this fashion. and that even if they are, that there weren't appropriate consequences with that conduct. we have to change that culture. >> stores are limiting the number of shoppers they let inside the store. not the same level of hustle and bustle in concord. smaller crowds at the sun valley shopping center there. an increase over the last two years but not pre-pandemic. good crowds though, shopping and spending money but the big question is was it enough for
11:02 pm
local businesses to make ends meet? >> da lin checked in with some store owners to see how they are fego in the shopping season. >> reporter: many shoppers tell me this holiday season feels back to normal. fewer masks, more people, and an upbeat attitude. the journals have fallen off the shelves as have many fancy pens. >> i think we will beat 2019 this year. >> you might beat 2019? >> yes. for that, i'm thankful. >> reporter: 2019 was his best year. payne stationary has been in business 23 years. >> i plan on working every day until the end of the month except for christmas day. >> reporter: because december is his most important month. accounts for about 30% of his annual sales. >> this is definitely when we
11:03 pm
are getting calls on it. >> reporter: across the street at shoes on solano, they are offering discounts to draw customer ins. >> come comparison to last year, people are buying a little less expensive but the traffic is similar. and in comparison to 2019, our foot traffic is still lower. >> reporter: many small businesses tell me they are making less money this holiday season compared to last year. they blame inflation. and online shopping. >> being sheltered in place so long has taught people how to shop alternatively. >> reporter: they are known to be more laid back, community oriented and easy to get in and out of. let's check out the bigger stores. union square. this is a visual example of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping. packed. a lot of people walking around. but one thing we noticed, most people leaveing the stores empty handed without shopping bags. >> this year, i'm spending less
11:04 pm
than definitely prior years. >> reporter: shoppers blame the economic uncertainties. the department of commerce reports u.s. retail sales fell. people were cutting back on consumer electronics. clothing, and sportinged goos. >> bargain shopping. looking for all the sales. >> reporter: sonny says he is lucky his store is doing better than expected. >> approaching my goal. and thinking to myself hey, i got six more days of christmas season left. >> reporter: the small mom and pop shop says it is okay to check out the big box stores but don't forget the local community stores. small businesses are what keep communities vibrant. i'm da lin, kpix5. and more and more shipping deadlines are passing and getting your gifts to where they need to be only gets more expensive no matter who you use to ship them. postal service deadline for standard and first class mail has come and gone.
11:05 pm
but if you want to pay a little more, priority mail will do an extra couple of days. they have to be postmarked by the 19th. a lot of people are turning to buy now pay later services to get them through the holiday. spending and while they can provide immediate solution, experts warn against becoming dependent on them. >> one thing you must remember is that there is hidden cost. so it tuly need to pay higher interest rate down the road. >> as the holiday shopping season coming down to the final week, procrastinators may pay the price this season. if you plan to pick up last minute items at the macy's at union square, worker theres are set to go on strike. contract negotiations are set for december 21st. if no agreement is reached, macy's workers will strike starting at midnight on the 23rd. and, go through
11:06 pm
christmas eve. the union says they are fighting for more pay, improved store security and more affordable health care. macy's tells me they are hopeful that a deal can be reached. well, several toy drives and give aways happening this weekend across the bay area. just in time for christmas. like these in the east bay and the peninsula. congresswoman jackie spear was in san mateo for the samaritan house toy give away. in the center part of your screen, oakland mayor-elect sheng thao. they ran out of toys early in the morning so libby schaaf had to run out and buy more. >> i pulled one little girl out of the line because she said her dream for christmas was to have a bike. we had one left for a little girl. her face? priceless.
11:07 pm
>> schaaf said she had a good time in her last toy drive as mayor. with just a week to go before christmas, food banks across the bay area are making a final push for donations. our reed cowan shows us how far a dollar donation can go and how much more is still needed. >> reporter: it has been a great day in oakland. we are coming to you from whole foods where it is all about shop local, live local. aren't we lucky to live in a place that produces fresh fruit and vegetables. getting that fooden o to tables as we know, one in four face food insecurity in alameda county. it takes a village. mike, tell me about what the need is. >> we are experiencing pretty significant need. one in four county residents is currently experiencing some level of food insecurity. and the numbers now are as high as they were in the middle of the pandemic. so the support we are getting is very
11:08 pm
important. >> fathers, mothers, who have the cupboards open and there is no food to feed their children. really, you have a heart for children. i know at your food bank. tell me how you are reaching out to kids and families. >> children make up half of who we serve as a food bank. a lot of our programming is really child and family focused. and, the real point is that a child who isn't nourished is not going to succeed in school. that is why we make that a focus. but the fact is there is no one single face of hunger as we have seen the last couple of years. it just takes one catastrophic event to drive somebody to need some support. the help we are getting this time of year is extremely critical to this. but we also hope all of this attention, you know, it helps encourage people who may be reticent or not thought they needed help to reach out. that is why we are here. >> reporter: there is no shame in asking for help and the
11:09 pm
alameda county food bank needs $9.3 million raised by the end of september to keep the operations going to meet the demand. if you want to be a part of that, you can go to our website, kpix.com/give or follow the qr code on the bottom of your screen. that will get you connected to this very important mission to address to keep kids fed. families fed. and make sure you are a part of a great, great community effort. still ahead. bay area communities taking part in a nationwide ceremony to honor veterans during the holidays. but first, we will check in with someone living right near the epicenter of that earthquake that hit near berkeley this morning. and we are going back down into the upper 20s . we won't all be that cold, but many of us will. i will show you why that is not going to last the next seven days. there is some improvement coming by the middle of this week. coming up in the first alert forecast.
11:12 pm
our devin fehely spoke with one man who caught his home shaking on video from multiple angles. >> it was very strong and sudden jolt. >> reporter: the security cameras at andrew shelby's el cerrito home captured the quake which rattled the fridge and the cabinets in the kitchen and shook the christmas tree and ornaments in the living room. >> it felt like a bomb went off. everything shook not like a rolling earthquake that starts gradual. this was abrupt. instantly. >> reporter: according to the usgs, the epicenter was in el cerrito not far from andrew's home but the shaking was felt far and wide. across the bay in san francisco, up and down the peninsula. >> it was just barely a couple of blocks north of our house. >> reporter: in modern life, there are cameras recording all the time. many of them caug the shaking, too. these images
11:13 pm
are from the audubon society and their osprey cam near the bay bridge. it is a little hard to make out. but inside that red circle is the bird. he takes off as soon as the shaking starts. you get an even better view from the nest itself. andrew says it is a powerful reminder that we live in earthquake country and need to be ready when the big one comes. >> now, we have a reminder, we have had this earthquake. and, a few over the years. a couple of years ago, we had another one like this one. so i think it is inevitable sooner or later we will have quite a big one. >> it is inevitable. >> especially where he is. >> oh, exactly. >> yeah. >> and it was 20 until 4:00 in the morning. you didn't feel it? >> no. i didn't. >> i didn't. but people did feel it. >> it is not often someone describes a 3.6 as bomb going off. the reason, this was really shallow. this was about three-and-a-half miles deep. you can consider an earthquake
11:14 pm
rupture happening deep in the ground, 40 miles, is still considered shallow. this one was only three-and-a-half miles. that is why this was felt so strongly. and, a 3.6, only tells you part of the story. the shake intensity tells you the other. this was widely felt across the bay. it was felt in other places but fell in line with 3.6. it fete like a lot more than that if you were right on top of it. as far as today and tomorrow, our concern, there is no difference. we are going to be just as cold tomorrow morning as we were today. and a lot of us had to go in the upper 20s . if you look at where we are, it is 36 in santa rosa. 35 in concord. 35 in livermore. those numbers are going down here. if we pull out the detail from the north bay. petaluma, 29. santa rosa, 29. 31, concord. 30 in walnut creek. and the number ins the trivalley in the low
11:15 pm
30s as well. not to say it won't be cold through the immediate bay. we will see temperatures in the mid 30s . that is cold enough. but, over here, we had some pretty dense fog develop this morning. and, now, the national weather service from the sacramento office has all put out a dense fog advisory for tomorrow morning. we don't have any of that through the majority of the bay. but solano county, you have it. this really did a classic number on the central valley. if you drive into the central valley tomorrow morning, be prepared for significant slowing down. because, you don't want to mess with the fog. in the early morning hours. if we look at the futurecast depiction form, we will develop our own home grown fog here. sometimes that can creep over into contra costa county and into the alameda county. tomorrow, our issue at home will be the stuff we develop here locally. and it shouldn't be terribly bad. but still enough that you will want
11:16 pm
extra time. here is how we cool down the morning lows. the next storm which is not bringing us rain, you see it show up with the shield of clouds and the rain appears there. that gives us the clouds and the overnight hours. though we don't get the rain out of it, it is the overnight hours and the clouds that will help to improve the morning lows. so with clear skies again tomorrow, and likely again on monday, we still have to do the upper 20s for the north bay valleys but it will warm up into the mid and upper 30s by tuesday and wednesday. daytime highs tomorrow are pretty much on the mark for average. mid 50s . a couple of degrees below average. 57 in general will be the average for most locations and there isn't anything on the storm track coming our way. as we look at the seven day forecast, we maybe increase the clouds a little bit and the temperatures not just in the morning for the morning lows by about wednesday. but for the daytime highs. san jose as we get to saturday. christmas eve day. you will be in the mid 60s and you will still be there on
