time todndssthinatiohe panel's nearly 18-month investigation into the attack on the u.s. capitol in 2021. jarred hill joins us now with more on what we can expect. jarred? >> reporter: good morning. there are some reports that the january 6th committee will refer criminal charges against former president trump and some of his associates and staff. centered not just around the attack on the capitol itself but also the pressure campaign to overturn the results of the 2020 election. in what's likely to be its final public meeting, the house january 6th committee is expected to formally adopt its final report and vote on possible criminal referrals. it concludes the panel's months' long procedure that included a series of bombshell hearings with former white house officials, examining the events surrounding the u.s. capitol riot and what role former president trump and his supporters played. >> we want to focus on those for which we believe there's the strongest evidence.

>> reporter: committee member adam schiff told cnn he believes trump should face prosecution. >> i think that the evidence is there that donald trump committed criminal offenses in connection with his efforts to overturn the election. >> reporter: the former president lashed out against schiff on his truth social platform and slammed the house panel as the highly partisan unselect committee. >> i am announcing my candidacy for president of the united states. >> reporter: trump announced another presidential run last month. days later attorney general mailer -- merrick garland appointed jack smith to oversee the criminal investigation into the former president's handling of classified material as well as what happened on january 6th. >> such an appointment underscores the department's commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters. >> reporter: an aide social -- says r -- says after the meeting, there will be an executive summery of

the report and additional information about witnesses. on top of the criminal referrals which, again, don't carry any legal weight, the panel could recommend disciplinary from other government agencies and bar associations. all this coming just a few days after one of the january 6th rioters was sentenced to five years in prison. more than 880 people have been charged in relation to that attack on january 6th. back to you. >> jarred hill covering it all for us. thank you. and we will bring you full coverage of today's january 6th house committee meeting in a cbs news special report at 1:00 p.m. eastern right here on cbs. a trump-era policy that curbed migrants from entering the u.s. could end wednesday unless the supreme court intervenes. it's led to an influx of migrants over the border. over the weekend, the mayor of el paso declared a state of emergency saying there are already hundreds of asylum seekers living on the city's streets. lilia luciano is there. >> reporter: with thousands of

migrants and asylum seekers crossing daly into el paso, the city is struggling to keep up. >> all the places i know are also full. >> reporter: ruben garcia runs the largest migrant shelter there. >> it is utterly painful to say i do not have room for you. >> reporter: with nonprofits and churches reaching full capacity, many are forced to sleep outside in below-freezing temperatures. paso and onto the cities where their families are waiting for them. [ speaking non-english ] "not everyone opens their home to keep you from suffering in the cold," says edwin antonio cruz, who came from nicaragua hoping to find work to provide a better life for his family and eventually return home. what does your daughter tell when you you talk to her? [ speaking non-english ] that she's going to miss you on christmas. and -- [ speaking non-english ] the first christmas you're away there each other. lilia luciano, cbs news, el paso, texas. the former ceo of cryptocurrency exchange ftx is reportedly expected to change course and agree to extradition to the u.s. as early as today. 30-year-old sam bankman fried will appear in a bahamas courtroom today. he was arrested in the bahamas last week. the u.s. has charged him with several criminal violations including wire fraud and money laundering. he's accused of using billions of dollars of investors' money for his own personal gain.

it came to light after his company, ftx, filed for bankruptcy last month. the holiday travel rush gets under way this week. nearly 113 million americans are set to hit the roads, rails, or skies. but the weather may not cooperate. this was the scene in buffalo, new york, over the weekend. plows out in full force as the snow came down, and more could be on the way. a deep chill is expected to set in across the nation, and another wintry storm could wreak havoc on your travel plans. here's weather channel meteorologist molly mccollum. >> reporter: we know it's going to be a busy week of holiday travel, but it's also going to be a busy week of weather. let's start in the pacific northwest where we have snow ano rain moving in. the snow levels coming way down. even at places like seattle. we also know some high mountain passes will be difficult with the snow piling up. it's not just the snow, it's also the bitter cold air. check out these windchills. places like north dakota, wednesday, this is wednesday evening, 40 below zero.

dramatic video of a car plunging off a bridge in ft. myers, florida. you can see the car slam into other vehicles early saturday before careening off that bridge. first responders jumped into the water looking for the driver. they performed cpr on him before a boat arrived and he was taken to the hospital. investigators say he suffered life-threatening injuries. it's unclear what caused that accident. there was severe turbulence on a flight to hawaii, and police in canada are investigating a deadly shooting. "reuters" is reporting at least five people were shot dead by a gunman in a condominium near toronto. this happened last night. police and ambulances rushed to the scene after a call of an

active shooter in vaughn city. the gunman was shot deadly by responding officers. one person is in the hospital in serious condition. police are trying to figure out a motive and if the shooter was a resident at the complex. "the new york times" says 36 people were hurt, 11 seriously, after turbulence aii. authorities say it happened yesterday about a half hour before the hawaiian airlines flight from phoenix was due to arrive in honolulu. 288 people were on board. a spokesperson says a 14-month-old was among those hurt. 11 people were hospitalized in serious condition. their injuries include a head injury, lacerations, nausea, bruising, and loss of consciousness. >> it was probably the most turbulent flight we've ever been on. the turbulence was really, really rocky. we were more nervous we were going to throw up. it's definitely a flight wild remember how rocky it was and jerki. >> planes can sail into clear air turbulence without warning.

officials say the injuries are not left threatening. npr reports the vatican defrocked an anti-abortion rights priest. a letter to u.s. bishops from the vatican ambassador said frank pavon engaged in quote, blasphemous presentation on social media. he was the head of the anti-abortion rights group priests for life was total to stop his activism for donald trump. there is no chance for an appeal. still to ce here, a the sequ to "avatar" has a big opening weekend. big opening weekend. waiting. s "avatar" has a sometimes it's just big opening weekend. "violent night" rounded out the top three movies. in today's cbs "money watch," investors are hoping for a better week on wall street after last week's dismal showing. stocks slid friday as concerns of a recession keep growing. the dow fell 281 points, dropping for a second straight week. the nasdaq slid 105 points. the s&p 500 lost 43. we are expected to get a slate of data this week on the housing market. experts project the housing slump trend will continue. we'll get new clues tomorrow

when the u.s. census bureau releases housing stats and building permits figures for november. on wednesday, the national association of realtors will release last month's existing home sales. on thursday we'll get weekly data on mortgage rates and applications. and then on friday new home sales data for november will also be released. on the flip side, good news when it comes to gas prices. they've been on the decline. the national average is now at a 15-month low. aaa says a gallon of regular gas is now $3.14. it's below that in 19 states where the current average is less than $3 a gallon, in places like ohio, colorado, and minnesota. and you will need plenty of milk for this. take a look. the big fruit loop is what it's called. a single fruit loop. it goes on sale today for $20. it's created by mischief, a brooklyn-based group of artists, who like to make headlines. by kellogg's.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ we got our first glimpse of rihanna's baby this weekend. the singer shared the adorable video on tiktok. the baby babbles as rihanna is apparently heard saying "you're trying to get mommy's phone?" the pop star and a$ap rocky welcomed the bundle of joy in may. they have kept the baby's name ape secret, and up until now they had not shared any photos. elon musk may give himself the boot after this twitter post. he tweeted his poll last night asking users whether he should step down as the head of twitter. it comes after recent controversy surrounding the
