the house january 6th committee is urging the justice department to file criminal charges against former president donald trump for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results. it is the first time in u.s. history that congress has referred a former president to federal prosecutors to face possible felony charges. jarred hill is in new york with the details. jarred, this is uncharted territory. >> yeah, that's right, bradley. so the criminal referral, though, from the january 6th committee may not have any legal teeth, but lawmakers say this is a roadmap for the department of justice's investigation. one member of the committee says the evidence against former president trump is inescapable. the january 6th committee ended its 18-month-long investigation by taking the unprecedented step of referring former president donald trump for four criminal charges to the department of justice. >> he lost the 2020 election and le knew it, but he chose to try to stay in office through a multi-part scheme to overturn

the results and block the transfer of power. >> every president in our history has defended this orderly transfer of authority except one. >> reporter: the panel again used taped interviews to make its case like this clip from former trump aide hope hicks, describing the former president's hours-long refusal to call off the mob from the capitol. >> he said something along the lines of, you know, nobody will care about my legacy if i lose. >> reporter: on truth social, trump slammed the committee as corrupt and partisan and repeated false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. >> they don't talk about the reason that everybody was there. it was because of the election and because of election fraud. >> reporter: lawmakers also made criminal referrals for several trump associates including trump's lawyer john east mooin. while they're not legally binding, experts say the hundreds of transcripts binding them could save the doj months of legwork.

>> it's like putting special council on steroids. >> reporter: the committee voted unanimously to adopt its final report, which is expected to be released this week. now, the department of justice has not given any indication on how it will play into the investigation. but something interesting here, bradley. in justifying the recommended charges, the committee pointed toward a federal judge. back in march he said trump more likely than not tried to illegally obstruct congress on january 6th. the question is going to be if any of this is going to hold any special weight with his counsel and his team. jarred, back to you. former movie mogul harvey weinstein faces up to 24 more years in prison after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in los angeles in 2013.

jasmine veil has more. >> reporter: a los angeles jury has found former movie producer harvey weinstein guilty on three of these seven counts in his second sexual assault trial. >> today justice was won in the case of people versus harvey weinstein. >> reporter: four women testified during the trial. eight men and four women took more than nine days to convict the 70-year-old disgraced movie magnet of raping and sexually assaulting a victim described as jane doe number 1. speaking for the first time publicly since 2017, the victim said weinstein destroyed a part of her that night in 2013 that she'll never get back. the jury could not reach a verdict on two of the other women's accusations of rape and battery, including jennifer siebel newsom, wife of california governor gavin newsom, who said weinstein raped her in a beverly hills hotel room in 2005. the jury could not find the

the defendant guilty against a fourth victim. weinstein was accused of using his hollywood influence to get women into private mee meetinging and assault them. attorney gloria allred who represented one of the victims hailed the women's bravery for testifying. >> they have demonstrated empowered and courageous women are able to make powerful men accountable for the injustices they have inflicted on women. >> reporter: weinstein still has more than 20 years left on his sentence in new york after a rape and sexual assault conviction in 2020 that is now under appeal. jasmine veil, cbs news, los angeles. the supreme court temporarily blocked the biden administration from lifting a trump-era pandemic order that has been used to turn back asylum seekers at the southern border. but what's known as title 42 could still expire tomorrow. it comes as el paso, texas, declared a state of merge of the increase of migrants crocing

those are some of the headlines on this morning's newsstand. "the new york times" reports robert de niro was the intended victim of an attempted burglary in manhattan. a woman was accused of trying to steal christmas gifts. he was upstairs at the time and came down stairs in the living room as she was being arrested. authorities say she has been arrested on burglary charges many times before. officers were tracking the suspect and say they saw her break into the home.
