damaged. and thousands are in the dark. now, the work to clean up and recover. and that's where we begin. that afternoon, i am reed cowan. humboldt county to our north is recovering and mourning after that earthquake struck about 12 miles west of ferndale, at around 2:30 in the morning, that's about 200 miles north of san francisco. no tsunami was expected, and we just got an update from the training team. here's what they have to say. two people have died in medical emergencies during or after that quake . at least 11 people are injured at this hour, and, tens of thousands of pg& e customers have no electricity. the quake damaged roadways, including this mother for an bridge on your screen, with cracks right there, evidence that this one meant business. this is the main bridge out of ferndale, if you are unfamiliar with the area. as crews check it out, meanwhile, business

owners and homeowners have got a mess on their hands, too. >> all my grandmother's china -- so much fell out . there is not much left in there. >> so that is video from a home in eureka. you can see broken dishes on the ground, debris, drawers thrown open in the shaker. kpix 5 spoke with a woman from fortuna who says the mess is overwhelming, because they cannot shower , nor charge their phones. >> that's right, i was able to speak with tricia combs of humboldt county, who was sleeping when the quake hit. she says she never expressed anything like this. >> this when i think was the scariest one i have ever been in. and, it was very nerve-racking. and, i think that had a lot to do with all the aftershocks that came afterwards. >> officials tell us as of right now, there have been nearly 80 aftershocks, and this is showing possibility of

more to come. nearly every room is covered in fallen items here, and she tells me thanks to coding regulations, part of her day care was saved. >> the daycare rules of having shelves fastened to the wall, you know, that was a big blessing. >> and that was holmes at-home daycare. she is grateful no one else in her family was injured. reed ? >> leslie thank you , and welcome to the team. pg& e tell us there are 70,000+ households in the dark with the oncoming storm, including an entire native american reservation. power could be out for another 24 hours. a ferndale homeowner shared the mess in her house after the quake hit, meanwhile. our reporter spoke with her about the big jolt that also knocked out the power. >> things were crashing down

as you can see. this was a coffee station that we had in our house , in our old, victorian house, here. and it's all on the floor. >> caroline shows us the inside of her ferndale home, tuesday morning, after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled her out of bed, just after 2:30 a.m. >> and immediately, i thought okay, here we go. >> the quake was followed by more than two dozen aftershocks, in humboldt county. at least two or hurt, and thousands more were left without electricity, and homes were damaged. power was also out in nearby fortuna, where the quake broke business windows and tossed products off of store shelves. >> if it had been during the daytime and i was standing here, that would not have been fun. so, just another good reminder that you need to build things down and secure them. >> titus took this picture of

main street where damage appeared minimal, considering the strength of the quake. one year ago to the day, the same area was hit by a 6.2 magnitude quake, and many business owners were left with shattered glass. >> no plate glass windows out as compared to just a year ago on this exact same day. so it definitely was a north-south shaker, it was different than last year. >> the quake also damaged the historic ferndale bridge, and other roads. >> i feel very lucky that nothing else happened. >> officials are warning people to avoid the area while they inspect the damage. jasmine viel, cbs news. >> let's bring in anne makovec , who shows us more of the damage. >> when the sun came up , people were able to see the damage. starting with this plant nursery called route 1, fertilizer, tools, all over the place. and employees say the building itself is cracked. at home, he said his life flashed

before his eyes. >> it woke me up, violently. i jumped out of bed. i just heard this roaring .my phone went off saying there was an earthquake. this was, like , i thought the world was coming in hinged. it was deafening, loud, i was disoriented. >> several storefronts in fortuna look like this right now, broken glass everywhere. some of these properties were empty, but the ones that were occupied local businesses downtown clearly have some cleaning to do . here is video taken in a home near ferndale. it looks like a large shelf fell off the wall, there. several items, broken on the floor. this video also in ferndale is inside a woman's atrium. are plants on the floor, shattered glass, and, it looks like somethings hanging from the ceiling came off the hooks. in this video we see the inside of a market where everything has fallen from the shelves for soda cans, all over the floor there. and you can also see at the end of the video, some of the

refrigerator power is off. here is video from eureka, about 18 miles from ferndale, a cupboard door there, shaken open. plates, glasses, bolds shattered. we will have more throughout the evening here on kpix 5 . reed ? let's turn things over to meteorologist paul heggen with more. >> aftershocks will continue to roll from an earthquake this large. 6.4 magnitude earthquake. you can see here, there were a few other earthquakes around the region, but your eyes immediately go to that cluster of dots on the map they are color-coded by how old the quake reports are. green shows quakes more than 12 hours ago to the latest count is now at 89 different aftershocks hit just within the scope of this map or hit some of them are strong enough to get her attention on their own. one was 4.1. one was 4.6 and

friend this year as we have been traveling around and telling your stories and your communities more. leslie, some had just told us things have widely changed. >> we are seeing a heartbreaking level of need in the community, right. as you mentioned, we just got in our november numbers, and we served 488,000 people. and that is close to the number of the height of the pandemic for us . when we look at our financial donations, unfortunately, they are down 37%, versus two years ago, when we were serving the same number of people. at the same time, all our clients are being faced with inflation . so this is really challenging time for local food banks, and we are so reliant on community support. >> i just want to pin that down. you are saying almost half 1 million people were served just in the month of november, when we were out buying turkey and gravy and potato and stuffing? that many

in one month? >> that's right. people are still struggling to recover from months of loss in the pandemic. if you are a low income household, food, fuel , energy, it's a huge part of your budget. people are struggling on rent, grocery bills, and putting food on the table. >> we are seeing the face of hunger changing. i've been able to go to some of these food banks and listen to the call centers, and the need is real or single dads. single moms, calling and saying, how do i get a meal in front of my kids by 4:00 to 5:00, today? they have that very real need appeared some of them are calling from their own cars. so let's talk numbers, now that we've talked people. how much do you need to raise to continue to work? how can people make their donations stretch even further? i understand you had many people step forward that way. >> that's right, for every dollar donated we matched up to $1 million. this is our largest fundraising time of year. november and december

>> it is called boxes of hope, and here's what's in them. families received a ham or turkey, and all the fixings, beans, rice, potatoes, cranberry sauce. first alert weather now. parts of the bay area are seeing hazy skies today. the view from oakland and san jose, or cameras catching that there, i call it soupy. i think paul heggen has a better term. >> i would say smoky with smoke and fire places becoming trapped in the atmosphere. you will still see that haze onthe horizon the next few days, but it won't be as prevalent. weather headlines now, as we get closer to christmas weekend. hazy sun and clouds, kind of a mix of sun and clouds, we should be dry and wednesday, but there's a chance of showers. thursday night into friday, the best chance will be north of the golden gate. everyone has at least got a chance of picking up rainfall and any drops that follow the atmosphere would scrub some of the chimney smoke from the

atmosphere. we will get to christmas in a moment, but let's talk about that chance of showers. tonight, we will she see shower activity remain , clouds will increase through wednesday night into thursday. so, more clouds and sunshine are likely, thursday, but we get through most of the day dry. we will freeze the maps at 5:00. we will see showers scooting through the bay , and the more substantial moisture will be hanging around the coast. corporal in thursday evening and thursday night. it will be brief and light. but, this is more optimistic than previous forecast models in terms of how widespread the showers will be. we will take what we can get. we will see showers going into friday morning, just an unsettled pattern. most of the day should be dry, but we will see at least a chance of showers continuing on friday before we dry out over christmas. modest improvements to air quality, we did have unhealthy air for sensitive groups, but today we should be in a moderate category through the rest of the work week and weekend. we

will keep an eye along that timeline as well as the roads. trouble spots tomorrow with an emerging storm system will be twin cities, maybe denver, getting up in the snow trouble. that system will strengthen as it advances further east. all that east coast rain, snow from chicago to st. louis, and, this system will cause big problems for those east coast travel hubs on friday, with a major storm strengthening and sending all kinds of wintry weather towards the eastern seaboard. friday's travel forecast is a busy one. we are talking rain and snow from washington, d.c., rain and snow and wind around philadelphia and newark, chicago will be windy, atlanta, and new york will receive plenty of wind and rain as well. it will be challenging. please be patient and do what you can to be on time. as we look out at the salesforce tower, we are seeing 30 is,

that fog dissipated enough to allow the sun to come through. high temperatures tomorrow, very close to it's normal for this time of year. some spots or even a degree or two above normal. nice to see 60s on the map, inland into the santa clara valley. but, most temperatures are topping out in the 50s. we will have to wait a few days for that really warm air. then we have a dry christmas weekend with temperatures in the low to mid 60s for the entire bay area even upper 60s in the north bay. in the last day of the seven-day forecast brings a better chance of more widespread rain beginning a much more active weather pattern that should carry us into 2023. >> thanks so much. time for the red and gold report. two safeties are a decade apart in age, but as charlie walters shows, they have forged a very strong bond. >> this is the red and gold
