it was violent and loud. >> now at 11:00, the rush to help a deadly northwest coast tonight. hi, i'm sara donchey. huge earthquakes that hit up in northern california. it was the most destructive earthquake to hit there in years. it was a magnitude 6.4 quake near ferndale up in humboldt county. two people dead. at least ten people got hurt. tens of thousands of people are still in the dark at this hour. now the quake hit at 2:34 in the morning, centered in the ocean not far from the coastline more than 250 miles north of san francisco. and then dozens of aftershocks, at least one of them was pretty big. higher

than a magnitude 4.0. manuel baroqoit who told him this was scary. >> i thought my house was going to fall down. >> reporter: we first firsthand the impact of the magnitude 6.4 quake, which struck humboldt county near the oregon border just after 2:30 this morning. >> i woke up to this. >> reporter: darren gallagher says when he walked outside his home in rio del. >> i opened my porch and it fell off. a dirt bike is holding that in. >> reporter: the road buckled near ferndale, a town of 1,300 residents to the epic center. >> we're talking about damage to homes. damage to critical infrastructure and lifelines. so water, power. >> reporter: but as powerful as this jolt was, the damage could have been much worse. hitting 11 miles beneath the surface. >> when it's released further down into the earth, some of the energy has a chance to die

down. >> reporter: most buildings held steady. >> you could fall over that are not bolted down. short of a collapse building on you or a building collapsing on you. but the potential of having a book shelf is high. >> reporter: perhaps most unsettling is that the 6.4 tumbler may just be a warning. >> unfortunately we have no way of telling whether this was a larger earthquake. we don't know, but this is a great reminder. >> here is another look at the damage. cracks on highway 211. that's the main road into ferndale. so cal trans has had to shut that down to fix it. the governor declared an emergency in humboldt county. and tonight, mason walker shows us the messes left behind. >> reporter: here on the western end of the fern bridge. i can tell you a lot of the damage that i saw today was to

the south of where i'm ofm ing the town of ferndale, themselv lucky. >>displays, all sunglasses are broken. >> reporter: in the picturesque town of ferndale, the quake was not far away. but for such a strong shake, the effects were not what some expected. >> it doesn't seem to be any structural damage. >> living the good life here, but you need to take these bumps. >> reporter: mayor brooks was clean up for the second time this year. like many others, he/she was drawing comparisons. >> it wasn't as bad as last year. last year the fridge spilled. >> this year it felt harder. it felt like a bigger quake. the damage was a little bit less. >> reporter: cam on ritter is
11:04 pm
one of those trying to figure out why there wasn't more to clean up. for him this was almost a pleasant surprise. >> i was expecting it to be way worse than it was. >> i'm coming down to take some videos of the bridge. i've lived here my entire life. >> reporter: the big lingering moment in this region. that bridge is the whole link to the community. >> it would be devastating for our community. it really would. it's all we get to come in and out. there's a couple of other ways, but they call it the lost coast for a reason. >> reporter: a bit more on the bridge. there were a lot of cal trans workers out here today looking at that bridge, crawling all over it. a lot of folks down here on the western end under the landing section of the bridge. but a lot of

attention being paid out to the big arches under there. look at where they are looking at the cracks. you see the chess board pieces. it's a good indication that the crack was there before. what they're doing now is checking out whether things have changed dramatically after the shaking this morning. a structure is a lot to look at for that bridge. >> that was wilson walker reporting for us. and josh diaz hosts a youtube show out of his house. he lives in yreka. he was home at his computer, editing video when the shaking hit. he said it was violent, stronger than he had ever felt before. he ran to a doorway hoping it would stop. >> i've been in a lot of earthquakes. it's the craziest earthquake i've ever been a part of. i could hear the power going out. i was looking up and then the power went out and everything went black while we're still shaking.
11:06 pm
>> so thankfully josh and his family and pets were okay. their house wasn't damaged. paul heggen is here. everyone in the piece sounds like an earthquake expert because they have been through this before. >> i mean practice just gives you the expertise of having done this before. close enough to do a lot of damage. let's talk about the aftershocks because there has been a lot. this is the center of where it occurred. this is the updated map. every dot on this map is an individual aftershock magnitude 1.0 or greater. and a number of these aftershocks have been noticeable just on their own. magnitude three or greater. there have been 113 aftershocks so far. of course, these can continue for days, sometimes even weeks after the initial earthquake. this occurred towards where it bent out in the pacific and kind of thinking about the delta where
11:07 pm
they fall out. and then that triggers all the other aftershocks that we have been experiencing in that part of california farther out within the fault system. this is just a reminder that we do live in earthquake country and it is always a good idea to be ready for something like this or potentially something even stronger, sara? >> that news is always a little concerning. all right, paul. thank you so much. given the epic center was out in the pacific. you might have wondered why didn't it cause a tsunami warning? we talked to a scientist who told us there is a simple explanation for that. >> it's when we get the bigger earthquakes where one plate is going down underneath another one where you get these big vertical reactions in the crust. if the crust springs back up, that's what pushes it up a column of water and causes the tsunami. this wasn't large enough and didn't have enough of the vertical motion to cause a tsunami. >> certainly that's good news.

outside today here in the bay area? check out all the haze as the sun was setting this evening. this was a couple of days in a row of this. not good. >> no. it is all just from chimney smoke and all wood burning stoves and fireplaces, and of course, the big picture that will trap it at ground level and kind of concentrates. this is what we need is some rain to scrub that stuff. >> uh-oh. >> out of the atmosphere. >> yeah. >> there's at least some good news in that regard. we do have a mix of clouds and hazy sunshine in the forecast once again in this area. the air is trapping that chimney smoke at ground level. things will shift a little bit. there is a chance for showers to make a run through the bay area on late thursday, mainly thursday night into friday. this is going to be very light. it's going to be hit-or-miss stuff. not everybody will get measurable rainfall, but a chance to clean up the atmosphere a bit. all we're going to see for the rest

of tonight is a mix of clouds and haze. we'll see the mix of clouds and hazy sunshine tomorrow, but dry during the day. maybe a sprinkle for the north bay. but the better chance for showers will hold off until late thursday. increasing clouds tomorrow night. we'll be tracking more cloud cover throughout the day on thursday. in fact more clouds than sunshine. and the chance for showers will move into the north baby thursday evening across the rest of the bay area fairly quickly later thursday evening into thursday night and again, i think futurecast is probably overdoing the intensity of this. it will be hit or miss activity. if you get a shower, it won't last very long or add up to very much. but there's a chance those showers do continue into at least the first half of the day on friday. better rain chances farther down the line and we need it to scrub that stuff out of the atmosphere. the air quality was mostly in the moderate category. the purple air sensors are different than the epa sensors. but they give us a sense of what things are like, which you can see it. tomorrow, mostly moderate air quality anticipated. no spare
