we begin with what the national weather service says is a once in a generation storm. forecasters are calling for blizzard conditions, heavy snow, and rain and potentially life-threatening windchills as the storm moves across the country. close to 200 million people are under some sort of winter weather alert. there are also hard freeze warnings and watches throughout the south. as kris van cleave reports, it could create a holiday travel mess. >> reporter: ticking down on the bomb cyclone targeting christmas travel for millions. are you ready for the storm that's coming? >> no. >> i don't think -- i don't think we're ready. >> reporter: airlines are poised to cancel thousands of flights as the storm is expected to pummel the midwest with snow and then a polar plunge in temperature before heading east. >> i have faith that it's going to work out on thursday morning. >> reporter: chicago is in the bull's-eye. kelsey hicks is now leaving a conference there early hoping the storm doesn't steal her christmas back home in arkansas.

>> i've waited a long time to get to come to this particular conference. and i'm going to be stubborn and wait it out as long as i can. and i hope that doesn't come back to bite me. >> reporter: she's among nearly 113 million expected to travel for the holidays. most will drive just as the storm reaches its peak. that's not a great weather outlook up there. >> no. what you're seeing there is a lot of impacts on some of our key hubs. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg -- >> i don't think the system is where it needs to be just yet, and we'll see just how much brittleness there is in the system as we go into the next few days. >> reporter: this is a big test for the airlines. >> i think so. everybody recognizes that you can only do so much about the weather. but we'll be able to see how the airlines respond to those disruptions. >> reporter: but travel tensions are running high. this woman is now facing felony charges after this video appears to show her trashing an airline counter and hurling a computer monitor at a gate agent in miami. airlines say they've seen a

noticeable increase in people taking advantage of those change waivers that are in effect, allowing you to make a change without additional cost. that will help reduce those affected by cancelations thursday and friday. kris van cleave, cbs news, raper ronald regan national airport. volodymyr zelenskyy received a standing ovation from lawmakers during an historic wartime address to a joint meeting of congress. he also met with president biden yesterday in his first trip outside ukraine since russia invaded in february. he thanked mr. biden, congress, and the american people for their continuing support. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, wendi. president zelenskyy took painstaking effort in english to really make the case for why he believes the u.s. should continue supporting ukraine in this war against russia, framing it as an investment. as some on capitol hill are looking at the aid with a new level of scrutiny.

in a passionate address before congress, ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy said his country will be victorious and stressed the importance of continued u.s. support. >> your money is not charity. it's an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way. >> reporter: his words seemingly aimed at some republicans in the chamber who have criticized ukraine aid spending. >> we're flushing money out, and we don't know where it's going. but we're all for him. >> reporter: zelenskyy presented a flag to lawmakers, signed by soldiers fighting on the front lines in eastern ukraine. >> we stand, we fight, and we will win because we are united. ukraine, america, and the entire free world. >> reporter: the wartime president's first foreign trip ia invaded last february comes as congress

considers nearly $45 billion more in ukrainian assistance. >> he made it clear that without this aid package the ukrainians will be in real trouble and could even lose the war. >> reporter: earlier, president biden welcomed zelenskyy to the white house where he announced another almost $2 billion in ukraine security assistance. >> the american people have been with you every step of the way, and we will stay with you. we will stay with you for as long as it takes. >> reporter: the u.s. is also sending the ukrainians a patriot missile battery, a sophisticated air defense system that can repel russian missiles and aircraft. russia's foreign minister has said that use of this advanced missile system would be considered a provocation. wednesday president biden made a point to say that these are defensive tools, they believe it, not for escalating this ten-month-long war. wendy? >> jarred hill in new york. thanks. breaking news -- the founder of the failed cryptocurrency platform, ftx, is believed to be back in the u.s. and could

appear before a federal judge today. a flight believed to be carrying sam bankman-fried arrived in new york overnight from the bahamas after he agreed to be extradited. he's accused of defrauding ftx investors out of billions of dollars. he left the bahamas as prosecutors revealed two of his top associates pleaded guilty to criminal charges and are cooperating in the case. lilia luciano has more. >> reporter: under heavy guard, sam bankman-fried left a bahamian courthouse headed back to the u.s. the disgraced ftx founder has spent more than a week in jail. he was arrested in the bahamas at the request of federal prosecutors. he now faces numerous charges in new york including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. the 30-year-old agreed not to fight extradition. another chapter in a stunning fall from grace. once one of the richest men in the world, leading a company with celebrity endorsements from the likes of tom brady, nba star

steph curry, and actor larry david. >> i don't think so -- >> reporter: as bankman-fried's company collapsed, investors have lost billions. he appeared at an economic forum before his arrest. >> i made a lot of mistakes or things i would give anything to be able to do over again. i didn't ever try to commit fraud on anyone. >> reporter: it's expected bankman-fried will be arraigned here in new york this week. it is reported that he's seeking a bail deal. if convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. lilia luciano, cbs news, new york. tens of thousands of migrants are waiting on the mexican side of the southern border for title 42 to be lifted. that's the trump-era pandemic order that's turned back asylum seekers. it was set to expire yesterday, but the supreme court issued a temporary order keeping it in place for now. omar villafranca reports from el paso, texas, a city overwhelmed with migrants who have already

crossed over. >> reporter: this is the front line of the u.s.' latest immigration emergency. on one side, dozens of border patrol agents. on the other side of the metal wall topped with razor wire, desperation. as many as 1,000 migrants lined up against the fence waiting for a chance to make their case for asylum in the u.s. stephanie rubio and her 2-year-old son arrived in ciudad juarez, mexico -- [ speaking non-english ] you want a future. the texas national guard and state troopers have made their presence known, laying out razor wire at previous spots where migrants gathered as part of texas governor abbott's operation lone star. >> the people who were crossing into el paso should be blockaded. it's going to take several days to fully implement those measures. >> reporter: those that do get

to make their claims for asylum are released into el paso, a city bursting at the seams with migrants. shelters are full, forcing hundreds to sleep outside in the freezing cold. charity groups are stretched thin, offering coats, blankets, and meals. by the end of the week, the city of el paso plans to open up their convention center and two unused schools to be used as shelters for the migrants. just in time because temperatures in el paso are expected to dip into the low 20s this weekend. omar villafranca, cbs news, el paso, texas. after a year and a half investigation, the house january 6th committee is set to release its full 800-page report today. the committee held its final public meeting monday. it recommended the justice department file four criminal charges against former president donald trump for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results. an already-released summary of the report says trump provoked his supporters to violence at the capitol with false claims of

the biden administration says it's releasing doses of the prescription flu medicine tamiflu through the strategic national stockpile. demand for the medication has increased amid a spike in cases of the flu and other respiratory viruses. shortages of pain relievers and medicines have been reported at stores. cvs and walgreens have started limiting the amount of children's pain relief and fever-reducing medicine florida -- medicine that can be bought at one time. legal marijuana sales in new york state are set to begin, and israel's benjamin netanyahu announced a new government.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports netanyahu announced the formation of the most far-right coalition government in the country's history. it sets the stage for netanyahu to return as prime minister. in last month's election, he and his allies captured a majority of seats in the nation's legislature. it took weeks of negotiations to form a coalition government that still needs to be finalized. "reuters" says the fcc proposed a record $300 million fine in a robo call case. the government says two california men oversaw an operation that made more than five billion apparently illegal robo calls during a three-month span last year. it involved calls pressuring consumers to talk to a special about extending or reinstating their car's warranti. it's the largest penalty proposed by the fcc over unwanted calls. and "bloomberg" says new york's first legal recreational marijuana dispensary is set to

open nt we. the nonprofit, housing works, will run the first licensed dispensary to sell cannabis to the public in the state. it will be located in manhattan. the organization provides services to the homeless, people with hiv and aids, and those who have been incarcerated. it's one of three dozen entities awarded retail licenses to sell cannabis in new york state. still to come, a twist ending for a movie deal. why the world's largest movie theater company abandoned plans to acquire a rival.

lawmakers are at a standstill over a proposed amendment by republicans related to the trump-era border policy known as title 42 that allowed for the expulsion of migrants. the senate will meet again tod with the hope of reaching an agreement to avoid a partial government shutdown at midnight friday. the world's largest movie theater company ditched plans for a major acquisition, and a justin bieber inspired collection at one clothing store is no more. dan lieberman has that and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: wall street closed higher wednesday for a second day after upbeat earnings reports raised hopes corporate earnings may be better than expected even with a potential recession. the dow gained 526. nasdaq was up 162. s&p 500 added 56 points. home sales fell 7.7% last month compared with october, according to the national association of realtors. sales compared to a year ago were down 35.4%, marking the

tenth straight month of declines. amc theaters says it is no longer in talks to acquire theaters from regal parent company cineworld which filed for bankruptcy protection this year. amc reported another quarterly loss last month despite an increase in revenue. the outlook for 2023 appears more promising, though, with a slate of highly anticipated new releases. h&m has removed a justin bieber-inspired collection after the singer called it trash on instagram. urging people not to buy the items. 28-year-old bieber said he did not approve the collection which included t-shirts, jumpers, tote bags, and phone accessories. the company says it pulled the line but said it followed proper procedures. that's your "money watch" report for this thursday morning, i'm dan lieberman, cbs news, new york. up next, a new captain for the yankees. a record-breaking slugger gets a big honor. honor.
