why wall street says the company's bottom line is suffering right now. good afternoon, i am elizabeth cook, in for reed cowan. we start with travel mess hitting parts of the country as americans travel to their destinations for the holidays. we are keeping our eyes on sfo and other airports . our weather is mild, but other airports may have to deal with a trickle-down effect of cancellations and delays elsewhere. places, like denver and chicago , are dealing with winter warnings. thousands of flights, already affected this week, and bradley blackburn shows us, people are trying to get out ahead of even worse conditions, if they can. >> it's a race to the gates at airports across the country. mother nature in hot pursuit. >> i'm a little nervous about getting caught. >> i think i should make it out. >> millions of travelers were scrambling to reach

destinations, thursday, in what's being called a once in a generation storm. >> it's my first time flying with the little ones, so it's a little extra anxiety coming in. >> this mother -daughter duo , from australia, got stuck, after their flight was canceled. >> our flight was canceled, and instead of arriving the 23rd of december, i am hoping to arrive, christmas eve. >> thousands of flights were canceled nationwide, most of them at airports in denver and chicago. american, delta, and other major airlines, are waiving some fees to encourage travelers to avoid the storm, but many planes were already packed, making it difficult to find empty seats. it's no better on the roads. the minneapolis-st. paul region, record snowfall, wednesday, while icy conditions led to this crash, in iowa. president biden issued a warning as temperatures across the central high plains plummeted 50 degrees in just a few hours. >> this is not like a snow day when you are a kid, this is

serious stuff. >> we have two sets of twins, and we are staying home. >> people in the south are also bracing for a rare a hard freeze, making dangerous road conditions. bradley blackburn, cbs news. and take a look at this, slow-motion video from the national weather service shows what a condensing, making its own cloud after it is thrown into the frigid air. it's beautiful. this was at missoula international airport in montana. temperatures dropped to 17 degrees below zero fahrenheit. that is like stupid cold. >> that is stupid cold, and the wind chill felt close to 70 degrees below zero. >> what does that even feel like? >> it feels like the cold fingers of death. we joke about it, but it's dangerous, you could get frostbite in a matter of minutes . we are heading into a busy travel day before christmas eve. look at the national perspective. there

will be problems here on the west coast as we wind the clock forward. we will be tracking ice storms moving into seattle, right around sunrise on friday. so there could be significant delays at the seattle-to, airport if you're headed that direction, we have few flights coming from there. the big problems will be for the eastern half of the country, windy conditions through the midwest, with snow flying around detroit, cleveland, and wintry mix from washington, d.c., north into philadelphia, then to new york areas, jfk, laguardia, newark, all with wind related events, as this storm advances farther east . but, it is going to be a significant factor across the country checking the specific forecast for some hubs across the u.s., there are a couple that look okay.

dallas will be cold, but dry. same thing for denver. but wind related delays possible for atlanta as well in addition to those northeastern hubs. we'll take a look at our forecast, which includes a chance for showers tonight, in a few minutes. >> paul, thank you. a hearing today in federal court, where san francisco is being sued for what they call criminalizing homelessness by sweeping encampments. the dispute is over when the city has a right to stop people from sleeping on the streets. anne makovec joins us more on where things stand. anne? >> layers admit the city does not have enough shelter space for the thousands living now on house. he claims they do have help for everybody who wants a bit, which is hard to prove. those being kicked out of tents face a citation. it is a danger of health and safety by blocking the sidewalk. mayor london breed, and sf pd say there aren't enough beds for those who want one, then enforcement does not go

forward. but there's a question of the burden of proof in the barrier people face when looking for a shelter bed. the coalition on homelessness says it's time to get real. >> there is time to dispel the myth there isn't enough time, housing, money, to address this crisis properly, that's not true. >> the city's waitlist is now closed at 1000 people . it will be part of the case going forward in federal court. as for today's hearing, the judge will eventually issue a written ruling on the junction. >> anne, thank you so much. aftershocks continue to rattle humboldt county after the 6.4 earthquake. good news is power has been restored most of the 70,000 customers who lost service. but crews are still conducting surveys and inspecting gas lines. another major issue, some people haven't had running water for two days now. pallets of water are being given to people in rio del, and when the electricity turned back on , a damaged wire started a fire

which almost destroyed a woman's home visit kpix.com for more continuing coverage. and the bay area has felt shaking too, a 3.4 quake shook the area north of union city along the hayward fault. tesla stock fell nearly 9% today, shedding 69% of its value so far this year. it comes after tesla offered discounts on model 3 and modelvehicles amid fears of falling demand. another factor, wall street is worried that ceo, elon musk, and his recent twitter troubles, could hurt tesla sales and brand. as for the stock market overall, the dow continued its december selloff, dropping 349 points today . the nasdaq fell 233. and the s&p 500 lost 56. the holidays are a time for giving to charity. unfortunately, there are people who take advantage of

that. state attorney general, rob bonta, wants to keep you from getting scammed. before volunteering today, the second harvest food bank, inman san mateo, he shared some ways to protect yourself. he said be careful with making donations with qr codes, watch out for deceptive names that are similar but are not the right ones. and do not be pressured by telemarketers. donate directly to the organization, and do not give away your identity, do not give away your social security when donating. even though consumer fraud happens you shouldn't be scared out of helping others. >> this holiday season is the season of giving and generosity, and i want to encourage all californians to be generous, to give, to help those who need a helping hand, who are down on their luck. unfortunately, there are many, and we are better state and community when we help each other. >> every charity has to

well, if you watch around the ferry building, in san francisco, you have likely heard that voice. musician mark coleman has been serenading tourists and locals there for years. he tells reporter , da lin, he's trying to bring more soul to the city. >> musician mark coleman, on a mission to bring more human connection back to san francisco. and make it a little less tack. >> the only thing that stops me from performing is rain. the guitar's name is leo, named after my son. >> mark says the love and

support from wife christina and their 2-year-old son, has filled his life with happiness and allowed him to focus on music. and that's the best parting gift before going to work. he is 6'4", hops on a little scooter, and with all that gear, drives about 20 minutes on his san francisco home to his usual spot at the ferry building. like clockwork , on most days, for the last six years. from 12:00-6:00 he pours his heart out to passersby. mostly tourists, joggers, nearby office workers and folks picking up a quick bite. >> i believe that music is

energy, and it's a vibration. you are emitting a certain kind of vibration and frequency that the human ear picks up on, and it makes people feel better. >> my intention is to come out and make the city a better place, through music. thank you, precious. >> without giving specific numbers, mark says he makes enough money to take care of his family and even save a little, but it's far from glamorous. >> a lot of people love it. some people push back and say it's the worst thing they've heard out here, and they hate the noise level, you know. they call it noise, i've had people call the police on me. engagement. perhaps it's a sign that san francisco has gone too corporate.

>> i think we have lost a bit of our humanity. at most times i get no reaction back. sometimes people clap or smile at you, but a lot of times people don't want to look at you. i call it apathy, sometimes it is pure shyness. but what is up happening to you at the end of the day as you feel empty. so when you do something like this you are not getting this kind of energy back that you're putting out at this extreme level. i am putting out all of it. >> the music is not always tuned out, he has some loyal supporters, made friends, even met his wife here five years ago. she was a german tourist drawn to his voice. he found love at first sight. even in a changing city, it's a reminder, we can bring us together.

us how qb brock purdy spread a little cheer in the locker room. >> this is the red and gold report . >> brock purdy has accomplished quite a bit since taking over as the 49ers starting quarterback. he beat tom brady, clinch the title, but he's not too big to get into the holiday spirit. purdy and his two roommates handed these out, but he didn't have as much free time for the perfect picture. >> originally, i wanted to get all of us roommates and some christmas sweaters, and get in front of the tree we have in our apartment. we have lights and stockings with our initials on them. today we were rushed to get the card put together, so we found a picture and a separate one, and i'm glad how it turned out. >> with the red and gold report, i am charlie walter. time for a look at our

forecast with chief meteorologist paul heggen . a lot of folks are leaving and coming to town. so far it looks like our weather is cooperating. >> if you are traveling by road the bigger issue will be the traffic, as it always is . national traffic will continue to be a factor throughout today and tomorrow, maybe even cascading effects into the weekend. we are tracking the possibility for a few showers for this evening. nothing on first alert doppler at the moment. ground clutter east of san jose doesn't have actual shower activity. the rain is still off the coast at this point. it is still actually significantly off the coast right now. but it will make a run towards the north bay initially, and we will see a chance for hit or miss showers as we head to this evening. keep the umbrellas in the backseat just in case, but you can probably just dodge the individual raindrops. the rain is going to be that light. and it shuts down as we head toward early tomorrow morning, we will see decreasing clouds as we head through the day on

friday. it looks like a nice day overall, the last day before christmas eve. and local travel is looking just fine. let's take a look at the air quality impacts. that rain won't be substantial enough to impact our air-quality much. for christmas day , christmas weekend, those air-quality alerts will remain in place. the upper atmosphere traps in that chimney smoke . a significant change in the big picture weather pattern will happen by late monday, into tuesday, as another atmospheric river will be taking aim on the bay area. we are talking about a week to moderate atmospheric river expected, trending towards that ar three category, which means, we are looking at a balance of beneficial rain. but, also the potential for hazards in terms of local flooding, and wind

damage to trees and power lines. we will keep an eye on that over the next few days. right now, we have a layer cake of hayes and mid-level grounds clouds above that. everybody else in the upper 40s and low 50s. it's been a cool day overall, but with thickening clouds through this evening, everybody stays in the 40s, overnight, 30s to start friday. high temperatures tomorrow, a mix of upper 50s, but some low 60s in warmer locations, and the santa clara valley, even reaching up into the mid-60s by friday afternoon. if you are heading out to the niners game on saturday, it is a saturday game on christmas eve. kickoff at 1:05. mid 60s, plenty of sunshine, it should feel really nice out there. only the niners can take another step towards climbing in the playoff standings. temperatures will be warm for christmas weekend. low to mid 60s across the board. saturday and sunday, and shower chances begin to approach the coast and the north bay late monday with the
