air travel up ended tonight. the ferocious storm impacting bay area travelers. >> from kpix, this is the late news on cbs news bay area. good evening. i'm juliette goodrich in for sarah tonight. tens of millions of people are dealing with dangerously low temperatures tonight with an arctic blast slamming much of the country. it's being called a once in a generation storm. paul is joining us now, and this is far from over. >> yes, unfortunately the storm system is still in the process of strengthening, so more snow, more ice, and more wind will cause problems tomorrow. >> this video is the most stunning. it's a slip we've been seeing all night long. this is dash cam video in nebraska. it's capturing the

blizzard so intense. this looks like a scene from a movie. this is scary. >> yeah, like going into a tunnel. there's zero visibility causing as many problems at slick road conditions because it's impossible to see any trouble ahead until you're right on top of it. >> and this is even crazier. snow swirling over a kansas pickle ball court. looks really eerie. what would cause all this besides the wind? >> yes, the wind interacting with the building, the net, the fencing, propelling the light weight snow and moving it. it hurts when it hits you at that speed. >> and check this out. >> this is definitely horrible conditions. i'm not getting the mail today. >> i want to meet this person. you can't blame them. as snow dumped on his home, a man living in pittsburgh, kansas wasn't willing to brave the intense conditions to make the trek outside. >> and not just the snow. wind

chills in that part of kansas were between 20 and 25 degrees below 0, but some have seen wind chills as low as minus 70. >> yes, south dakota shut down over 500 miles of road along two major highways because the weather was so dangerous. >> yes, they experience blizzard conditions every winter, but this is an exceptional situation, even for them. >> so the deep freeze creating one of the most treacherous holiday travel seasons in dc. according to flight aware hundreds of flights have been delayed. all these people just trying to get to their destination. >> yes, as bradley blackburn shows us, it's leaving families in a jam right before christmas. >> dangerous and threatening. >> reporter: president biden urged americans to take warnings about the massive winter storm seriously. forecasters are calling the

weather system bringing white out conditions and sub zero temperatures, a once in a generation storm. >> if you get about 40 miles per hour, you start sliding around. >> reporter: the blast includes wind chill warnings from the northwest to the gulf coast and the eastern seaboards. it's already taking a toll on holiday travel. alicia mitchell spent the day in chicago trying to get home to los angeles. one flight was canceled, another delayed. >> we're hopeful. >> reporter: denver international airport saw hundreds of flights canceled thursday, according to flight aware. >> we're trying to get there, and two flights have canceled so far with southwest. i just got a flight for tonight, but i don't know that it's looking very likely. >> reporter: and in palm beach, florida, travelers tried to head north despite the forecast. >> i should have packed more jackets. >> i'm definitely not a fan of the cold. >> reporter: this couple is going to their grand son's bar mitzvah. >> just being if the family.

>> i'm going to freeze my butt off. >> reporter: millions of americans under some form of winter weather advisory with christmas just days away. cbs news, new york. paul has been tracking the conditions and what to expect for the holiday travel forecast. >> it's going to be a mess tomorrow, unfortunately. there's a trouble spot that's a little closer to us here on the west coast as well. we'll zoom in for a closer look. seattle is the trouble spot tomorrow morning, because freezing rain is already falling there. that's likely to continue into early tomorrow morning. that will change over to plain old cold rain, but any flights around seatac are likely to have delays friday. the bigger storm system is farther east. detroit, cleveland, pittsburgh, philadelphia, and even dc, new york and up to boston. even where the snow has stopped, the

wind is still a problem. as far south as atlanta, the windy conditions could cause delays, and the storm system will continue to strengthen throughout the day, even as the precipitation backs off. a couple locations look okay. denver and dallas will be cold, but at least they won't have any major weather problems, at least not tomorrow. but many locations across the country will have these difficulties. around here, our forecast is looking pretty good as we head into the holiday weekend. but things get more interesting next week. more on that in a few minutes. >> we can handle that compared to this right now. and the bay area airports have been packed with people heading home to see their families. but for some, their travel plans have not gone as planned. andrea nakano is joining us from oakland international where some travelers have been stranded. >> reporter: airport officials say they're expecting more than 670,000 people to come through the airport between december 16th and january 2nd. some

thought with the projected numbers, the airport would be busier, but many people had their flights canceled. bill and norma started their travel journey at 2:00 in the morning in colorado, and now they're stuck in oakland. their flight was canceled due to wealth. weather. where are you trying to go now? >> we were originally going to portland and see our daughter. now, we don't know. >> reporter: so a reunion like this one will have to be put on hold. this grandma from boise made it home for a large family gathering. a house full of 18, 20 people? >> yeah, it's going to be great. >> it's going to be a good time. >> reporter: with so many cancellations, it was smooth travels for those that were able to fly. >> unbelievably surprised. i

thought it would be crowded down here, and i was like where is everyone? >> reporter: but weather is supposed to impact holiday travel whether by air or on the ground. with another round of storms headed to california, expect sloppy and dangerous driving conditions for much of next week if you're headed to tahoe. >> we just hop in the car and hope for the best. >> reporter: dad, though, has more sound advice to offer his son. >> drive slow, drive careful, and take the aaa card. >> reporter: bill and norma will rent a car and see where their adventure will take them next. they canceled holiday plans last year due to covid and will try to make the best out of the situation this year. next year, they'll rethink taking a flight just to get out of colorado so they're not stuck in oakland again. >> i learned you really don't want to do travel planning when

a man is sitting in jail tonight for selling fentanyl to high school students. he's being held without bail after being arraigned today. he was known as risky or mad man and sold the drugs to 15-year-olds around downtown los gados. according to the da, he urged his teen customers to share his contact information to build up his clientele. the investigation started when a

teen girl overdosed at a narcotics anonymous meeting. >> we believe the defendant sold, furnished, provided a fentanyl pill to a minor who, as a result, overdosed. she had to be given narcan and was transported to the hospital. we're thankful this is not a homicide case, but we know it easily could have resulted in the death of a minor. >> the da believes he sold drugs to at least four minors. and here's a figure to show you tonight just how bad the fentanyl epidemic is. the los angeles division of the dea says this year alone it seized enough fentanyl to kill the entire population of southern california. the agency says the amount equates to more than 7 million fentanyl pills along with more than a thousand pounds of fentanyl powder. a tesla that may have been in self-driving mode is now the center of a federal

investigation for an eight-car pile up that happened on the bay bridge this past thanksgiving on thanksgiving day. here's what the wreck looked like inside the tunnel. this is the lower deck. according to the tesla driver, the model s unexpectedly shifted to the left lane and braked to 20 miles per hour. nine people were treated for minor injuries. meanwhile, more lay offs at twitter after owner elon musk already laid off about half the platform's work force last month. today's firings impacted about half the remaining members of twitter's public policy team. this is according to a former employee who spoke to cnn. their main responsibilities included working with the trust council that was disbanded earlier this month. the ftx ceo made his first

under president biden. but three different, well, three different presidents, two different roles. now the king tides. they returned to the san francisco water front just in time for the weekend. they're expected to hit the embarcadero and other low lying spots the next few days. with them comes the risk of minor flooding, especially tomorrow and saturday. let's get to first alert weather. that's small in comparison to what's happening nationwide. >> right, we only really worry about king tides if there's a storm system moving in conjunction with them. we had a little rain try to fall across the bay area earlier today. not amounting to a lot. we'll step over to the video wall and look at the big picture perspective. a weak cold front resulted in a few showers, but it hasn't

amounted to measurable rainfall anywhere except the coastal ranges of the sierra. whatever is left will fade over the next few hours. we start the day dry on friday with a mix of clouds and sunshine, and then more and more sun throughout the daylight hours on friday. this rain, certainly not substantial enough to impact the air quality. it's still poor across the bay area. we have unhealthy for sensitive groups in the purple. the yellow is moderate. that's the case throughout the day tomorrow. so when we're in the orange category, that trigger's spare the air alert, and that's all the way through christmas weekend, through christmas eve on sunday. but we have more rain chances down the road, shaping up by late monday for parts of the bay area, but it's really monday night into

tuesday. that's going to be more widespread. heavier rain associated with a moderate strength atmosphere river, then a weaker atmospheric river by thursday of next week j. just the start of an unsettled pattern that will last for awhile. the 8 to 14 day outlook shows a significant chance of the wetter than average pattern sticking around through the first weekend in january. right now, still that haze on the horizon. temperatures mostly in the 40s. still clinging to 51 in san jose. in the 40s, not cooling off much more. low to mid-40s for most of us to start the day on friday. temperatures do warm up with emerging sunshine. just a little more cloud cover north of the golden gate keeping your temperatures a couple of degrees cooler. mostly 60s inland. the warm spots the santa clara valley.

san francisco garbage can rejoice over a new and stylish home. the city has finally settled on a custom trash can design to replace the old green ones, bringing an end to a long and dramatic campaign that pitted several trash can models against each other. get this, it's taken four years and over half a million dollars to get the right trash can. san francisco residents got to root
