airports, as people scramble to make sure they get to where they need to go for the holidays. and the government avoids a holiday shutdown after the house passes a $1 trillion spending bill and sends it to the president's desk for his signature. good afternoon, i am ryan yamamoto come in for reed cowan today. there's one story on top of everyone's mind, winter storms battering the country, and the impact it's having on millions of americans and their holiday plans this weekend. from coast to coast, the multiple winter storms, now causing cancellations and delays at airports, nationwide, from new york to chicago and seattle. it's impossible to escape the impacts of these winter storms . even though we are not getting hit by these storms directly, travel issues are rippling to the bay area airports locally. 173 flights have been canceled, 319 delayed. our own jocelyn moran has been talking to travelers at sfo on how they are coping with the stress during these

holiday travel plans. >> this is what we have been seeing , a lot of people lining up, checking in their bags, but there are people trying to talk to someone who can help them reschedule another flight after several of them were canceled. >> oh man, i got so nervous, i told my daughter , our flight is not going. >> i am being gas lit, i don't know what's going on, i don't know what's happening. >> frustration, and understandably so, as cancellations were left and right. >> she is moving to new york, so we are doing a final trip. >> his final flight was canceled. >> i've been on the phone for an hour, haven't gotten anything booked. >> in the middle of our interview -- >> one second, guys, i'll be happy to finish that. >> many are in similar situations. many had flights

from oakland to seattle , to atlanta. this one booked one straight to atlanta. >> i've never spent that much money on my rebooking of any flight . but this was so important for me. >> sean was flying to seattle from hawaii, when the pilot told them they had to land at sfo because of the weather in seattle. >> i was going to see if i could get a vehicle, i looked at the weather, and it's going to get above freezing, about 10 degrees above freezing. so about 12-13 hour drive is better than the unknown. >> this traveler had plans to go to iceland with his wife, but they are canceling those plans. trend >> what do i do now? i wanted to do something big. >> whether it's for a vacation or to spend the holidays with the ones they love, people here are desperately trying to get to destinations.

>> i want to eat my mom's famous mac & cheese. >> weather and other parts of the country are being felt here in the bay area. at sfo, i am jocelyn moran. >> it's all about that mac & cheese. but the weather is much more than an inconvenience for travelers. there are many americans stuck in the cold without power, in total, more than half the nation, some 200 million americans, are under some kind of warning or advisory. bs reporter bradley blackburn shows us why. >> from near white out conditions to flooding in the northeast, it is bringing extreme weather to dozens of states. the bomb cyclone is forcing flights to cancel, disrupting the christmas weekend for travelers. chicago woke up to blowing snow and subzero temperatures as the massive winter storm throws much of the u.s. into a deep freeze, their working to restore electricity after power went out for thousands of georgia residents. hank was sleeping when a tree crashed

through his home. >> i'm thankful for every day that i get up, because you never know when your last day will be. >> holy freaking cow. >> local flooding took drivers by surprise in queens while the high tide drenched this sidewalk. >> travelers are hoping to get to their destination before the brunt of the storm hits. >> our eyes are glued to the board to see if anything is delayed. but so far, things are looking good, fingers crossed. >> in places like oklahoma, low visibility and icy roads are making roads treacherous. >> the majority of them are single-vehicle crashes, which indicates to me is a trooper you are just driving too fast. >> i have a vehicle upside down. >> and kansas city, missouri, one person died after this minivan plunged into a frozen creek. it's one of several storm -related deaths reported around the nation so far. bradley blackburn, cbs news, new york. >> for more on these storms

let's check in with paul heggen, chief meteorologist. >> yeah, this is a powerful storm moving through a third of the country. everything is pin wheeling around, lake effect snow is definitely cranking up , buckets of snow are falling in buffalo right now. and there is plenty of rain making its way further north , but a lot of wood associated with the system, and a ton of cold air. that's going to be the lasting impact as we head into christmas weekend as precipitation winds down, the cold is settling in. these are the current windchill values right now. air temperatures are cold enough. we factor in that wind, and it feels close to 25 degrees below zero, in minneapolis, chicago, and pittsburgh 38 below. that is just frigid air. it even feels close to 10 below in nashville, tennessee. tomorrow, again, the snow, the rain, not going to be as much of a factor, but there will be the spots around new york and towards chicago as well and print plenty of rain. but

>> the bill includes more than $770 billion in non-defense programs, like healthcare, and education. $858 billion in defense funding, and also includes $44 billion in aid for ukraine, which a growing number of house republicans oppose. >> these massive costs are not our responsibility, they are europe's. to this is a future investment in democracy and thus the safety of the free world. >> threatening to support no legislation if they voted for the bill. and if every senate republican did their job we wouldn't be in this mess. >> despite the threat, 18 republicans joined democrats . >> most of this has been

bipartisan. >> it's right thing for the nation, i believe. >> the bill heads to president biden's desk for his signature. debra alfarone, cbs news, capitol hill. >> and before biden signs that spending bill, he's already signed the $850 billion national defense authorization act into law. massive spending bill would give members a pay raise and fund additional support for ukraine and taiwan. it also ends the military covid-19 vaccine mandate, which passed through congress, but bipartisan support. we continue working with groups across the bay area to make sure no one goes hungry for the holidays. and later, details on 49ers playoff tickets, as the team keeps an eye on

on the way bringing multiple rain chances to the area, but for now we are stuck with that brown smudge . temperatures are mostly in the mid-50s, but san jose , you are up into the low 60s this afternoon. here's the current air-quality map . it reflects what you just saw from salesforce tower. a lot of orange dots on the map for sensitive groups on the map. it's where we will stay for most of the weekend. there will be some yellow, but the spare the air alert continues for christmas eve and christmas day. we need rain, but we won't get it over the weekend. temperatures are dropping to what's normal . upper 30s and low to mid 40s across the board. high temperatures are about 5 degrees above average. low 60s around the bay and along the coast. a mix of low to mid 60s further inland, except for inland in the east bay, temperatures will be slow to warm up, because you have to get rid of that fog before the answer can warm up it rain

chances increased dramatically, next week. some showers move in on monday, but it's really monday night into tuesday, and that's associated with a strong atmospheric river that will bring the threat of localized flooding and strong winds as well. more rain will follow that up, some showers on wednesday, but wednesday night, and more on friday. how much are we talking about? with this first system, the atmospheric river, the european model says up to 2 1/2 inches of rain. that would be fantastic, and we would take that. but the american forecast model almost doubles those numbers, saying anywhere from 2.5 to 4 inches, just out of that storm system. we will look at that average, we expect 1.5 to 2 inches. the on the scope of the seven-day forecast from the climate prediction center, taking us into genera, both show that wet pattern is sticking around. it has at
