f0 from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. now on cbs news bay area, the final hour of christmas. we look back on the cheer and charity being spread today. >> cool, awesome, amazing. >> i'm excited. i want to go home and open this. and then we prepare for a new round of winter storms. this time, we are in the path. what that means for the new week ahead. and harassment. homophobic and racist remarks while just trying to enjoy a meal. police think they're not the only victims either. good evening. merry christmas from cbs news bay area. an eventful christmas day across the bay. people out enjoying themselves, donating time and money to help others at churches, charities, even at chase center. and travel is in the news as well with delays and

cancellations continuing. betty yu was at chase center tonight and met with some kids that got a christmas experience. >> reporter: it was a win for the warriors and the kids this christmas. sunday's game was extra special for children dealing with critical illnesses. before tip off, jordan poole, klay thompson, and other players handed out presents to a select number of kids. the bay area non-profit family house, chose families whose children are being treated for serious illnesses, like cancer, at ucsf. shiloh's son was born premature and deals with ongoing lung issues. >> i got a replica ring, a shirt. >> reporter: the family lives near yosemite. the nonprofit

provides supportive services and resources to families undergoing treatment. >> i'm excited. i want to go home and open this, but i have to watch the game. >> reporter: first time at a game? >> yes, it was surprising. it was a good experience. i don't think, i'm, this is probably the best thing that a kid can experience. >> reporter: the warriors treated the families to a custom game day experience as part of their season of giving campaign. >> we decided we weren't doing christmas this year because we just didn't feel it, then this happened. i was like hey, who wouldn't want to see the warriors play for christmas. so we got to stay in the city and do union square and all the cool stuff. >> an ipad! wow, thank you! >> reporter: 13-year-old trey was born with kidney disease. how is your christmas? >> good! it's been very good so far. very.

>> reporter: what's the best part? >> this right here! >> reporter: what's the first thing you'll do with your ipad? >> probably watch tv and play all my games on here. >> reporter: his father said after one failed kidney transplant, he hopes to successfully donate his kidney to his son next year. >> it makes me feel real good bringing him. great. >> reporter: the night's experiences were a lot to take in for the children, but also for the parents. for many, it was their first time seeing a warriors game. >> i'm a little speechless with everything that's happening. the homeless in the tenderloin enjoyed warm meals this christmas morning courtesy of st. anthony's foundation. volunteers prepared and served 1500 meals with ham and vegetables and brownies. in other news, difficult circumstances overshadowed a christmas celebration for a bay

area church. st. paul's was targeted by an arsonist earlier this year. devin fehely spoke with the church. >> it's a resilient con con congregation. >> reporter: the pastor says they know what it's like to be a weary traveler. >> we don't know what the sanctuary will be like years from now, but as long as we're gathered in worship, church and worship is happening. >> looks like a church. heavy smoke. >> reporter: this was the scene from june of this year. san jose police say a homeless man, unconnected to the church, set fire to the sanctuary. st. paul's beloved historic pipe organ, in a cruelly iconic twist, acted like a chimney spreading the flames to the heavens above. >> that was the chuck i was married in, that was the church

both my kids were baptized in. a lot of good memories happened in that place. >> reporter: tina paulson has been a member there for nearly 20 years. she still attends at a borrowed chapel at nearby notre dame high school. >> recognize the fact that we're still here, together, and doing good work in the downtown area. >> reporter: did rebuilding process, the pastor says, is likely to take years. the downtown church is a corner stone of the community that struggles with homelessness and mental illness. she says it will be built on a foundation of faith and forgiveness. >> we understand the people who are suffering. the people who may lash out through no fault of us. the spare the air alert for the bay area was extended for another day, meaning don't burn wood in the fireplace. darren peck is here to tell us why the

this man accused of harassing this couple at a restaurant on christmas eve. no one knows what caused him to start talking to them, but they quickly realized he wanted to start trouble. >> it was a shock to say the least. >> reporter: in the video, you can see the energy change when he approaches for a second time. >> i didn't say anything. >> you didn't say anything? >> elliott and i were shaking and stuttering towards the end of it. >> reporter: the back and forth with the man continuing to ask racist and homophobic questions. >> i'm korean. >> the alarm bells were ringing inside our head. like, we are in danger. >> reporter: eventually the man left, but the two say he stood outside staring at them. >> he was staring us down for 10 to 15 minutes through the window, and his gaze never went from us. >> reporter: eventually he did leave. store employees walked the two out to their car.

storm. very active storm track in the pacific. ours is that one right there. if we take that batch, bring it forward, this is a significant rain maker. get rid of the clouds and rain, and look at the water vapor in the atmosphere. a different story shows up. this is a fairly significant atmospheric river. the brighter the color, the higher the concentration of water vapor. this is what can really supercharge a storm with a lot more moisture than it would have ordinarily. and with a significant atmospheric river, plan on a pretty good rain on tuesday. we'll probably have minor street flooding. low lying intersections. it starts as early as tomorrow night. is already noticing ading edgethugh sonot

as wemoward, it's overnighuret into heart of this. 4:00 a.m. is probably prime time for the storm. some of the most impressive, widespread, steadiest rain. even some isolated thunderstorms in the leading edge. this is also when it will be the windiest, but first the rest of the rain story. stays this way through the morning. the late morning, we'll have follow up scattered showers that stay with us into the late afternoon. then blue sky in the afternoon. most of this is between 10:00 at night and 8:00 this the morning. that's the bulk of the inch and a half to two and a half inches of rain that will fall. minor ponding on roadways, tributaries and streams will likely rise above their banks. if that's a problem for you, chances are you already know vers, it's not keour anke e ma

eing floodi not in that kind of winter at this point. not yet. it's going to be busy the next several days. there's the wind. 40-mile an hour gusts. these atmospheric rivers are driven in an a conveyor belt of wind. it's part of what makes them so powerful. and we'll feel the wind when this thing comes on shore. 40 miles per hour gusts, and things better by the afternoon. it's a relatively warm system. most of the snow stays above 6,000 feet. and there's more coming, several more in the seven-day forecast. this could be an interesting end to december. but this is the main event. the rest of these are fairly moderate. friday and saturday looks like it could be a little better, but not as significant as tomorrow's rain. then there are more after that. but we'll deal with those further down the road here. the seven-day is busy. all right, vern, over to

you. actually, and you'll notice darren didn't say the storm door is open, but it's what i would have said. good news for san francisco's struggling mid-market area. ikea scheduled to open next year on market between 5th and 6th. da lin reports that a lot of business owners and neighbors believe it will help revitalize and clean up that part of town. >> reporter: the sign doesn't say when they're going to open, but we understand it's going to be in the fall of 2023. so by this time next year, you should be able to walk out with brand new furniture. ikea will anchor this multistory shopping mall. at around 80,000 square feet, it's smaller than the typical ikea stores. it's about a third of the emoryville ikea. >> even though it's smaller, it's still furniture i can by.
