to get them. they say the weather is to blame but the flight union says it is the companies fault. >> when they chose to take flights into the middle of the storm, their systems have not been able to keep up with the rescheduling, the cancellations and notification to crewmembers. >> the u.s. department of transportation is weighing in, they called the cancellations unacceptable. a lot of travelers are complaining on twitter. amanda tweeted their 6:40 pm flight was delayed six hours and then canceled after everybody boarded. kenzie waited 13 hours at the airport and she is missing her christmas vacation. 400 bay area flights were canceled

today. 124 flights are canceled for tomorrow. that is where laura talked to a family whose christmas surprise turned into a mess. >> reporter: people waited hours , some even days to retrieve their bags after thousands of flights have been delayed or canceled. one family's christmas gift turned into a nightmare just to turn around and go home. it has been 12 hours since he and his family arrived at the oakland airport. they never boarded a plane but they are waiting for luggage that could take hours to appear. >> we were planning this surprise, it was not what we thought. >> reporter: it started with the perfect christmas gift for their son. after receiving a impressive report card, his family said he earned a surprise trip to las vegas. >> disappointed.

>> southwest was saying they were short pilots and stewardesses. they kept it going for six hours until the canceled it. >> southwest has canceled thousands of flights today in part due to the winter storm that pummeled parts of the u.s. bags have been parked for 4 days in the oakland airport. waiting to be retrieved. >> tired, exhausted and frustrated. >> reporter: a disappointment that can be felt throughout the baggage claim area. in a statement southwest said they were fully staffed for the holiday travel weekend but cited extreme weather for the cause of the delays offering a heartfelt apology and acknowledging these disruptions are just the beginning. >> we do not want to leave our

luggage here either. we just want to get out. >> that is it. >> reporter: they were able to retrieve their bags to make the hour long drive back to their home but he said next year he will think twice before traveling for the holidays. the family tells me they have not been offered any kind of refund or compensation but this evening we noticed the southwest workers here working tirelessly all evening with positive attitudes trying to help each traveler find their bags and get home. at least 60 people have died from the massive winter storm. western new york was hit hard. they got 43 inches. in buffalo people were stranded in their cars. we talked to a family who spent christmas with the people that had to rescue them.

>> we tried to keep it together for as long as possible. >> reporter: as a deadly winter storm tour through the country, this family of 6 were stranded in their car while trying to find a hotel when their home lost power. >> you could not see anything. >> reporter: in the middle of the storm they were rescued by firefighters. >> he was shaken up and said please do not leave us. >> reporter: in erie county, many streets remain impassable because of heavy snow. erie county executive mark says some first responders had to be rescued. >> we can handle snow but with the wind and the blinding views, it was complete wideouts. >> reporter: some cities recorded the coldest christmas in decades and more than 20,000

the roads were narrow and there were power lines down. no word on how it started. there are new developments in the racist harassment that happened christmas eve at a san ramon in and out. el d e w started insulting and threatening them. now police say they arrested the suspect for violating california hate crime laws. but he talked to the victims tonight. >> reporter: irene and elliott came back to the same restaurant for burger and fries and they said they felt safe getting here.

in a three-minute tick-tock that has more than 10 million views, irene and elliott captured racist and homophobic rants from a man who approached them while they were filming themselves eating items off of the secret menu. in less than 48 hours, police announced they arrested 40habeen charged with two counts of committing a hate crime. >> a lot of people asked why we did not call police at that point, i think for us, i have been verbally assaulted on more than one occasion, most of the time you do not think somebody will take you seriously. >> one thing the police mentioned that stuck with me is nothing is too small to be reported. they would rather get the call and figure out it

take a moment to give us a view on how that is playing into the storm and why it is responsible for this being a first alert weather day. if we take a look and the big picture we go out to a wide view and you can see not just the edge of the storm we are experiencing but look what happens when you trace the clouds across the pacific. there is the atmospheric river, we are just looking at the water vapor in the atmosphere. the brighter the colors the higher the concentration of water vapor. these have become much more important in terms of our ability to recognize them and put them into context for storms over the last 5 years which is why you have heard this term spring up more over the last 5 years. we have come to recognize how important these things are and how they can drive the characteristics of some storms. they put a scale on them. the one we are about to experience is a 4. it

sounds high but there are parts of a 4 that can be beneficial, we are in a drought and this will be a good amount of rain. there are hazardous issues to this and we will look at it from two standpoints, the first is the flood watch. two areas of concern are the santa cruz mountains for some of the creeks down here and the north bay. where we can see minor localized street flooding anywhere tomorrow. it is also the tributary streams and creeks up here. one of the big rivers we often think about, the russian river, that is not at risk of flooding yet. we would have to have several storms over the course of a winter and this has not been one of those winters yet. we do not have to worry about it tomorrow. there is a wind advisory with this, the possibility is there for the

occasional tree to get blown over or a branch to get blown off of a tree. or a tree to get blown onto the street. the number one concern is you could encounter unexpected debris on the road in addition to ponding of water for low-lying sections. we looked at this at the top of the newscast but here it is again. this is the best way to get a overview on when it is going to rain. between now and 8 am. it will be widespread and pretty steady. it will add up to about two inches. this is now 10 am. we are done with the majority of it but we are not done completely. there will still be isolated showers that crop up throughout the late morning and early afternoon. by early afternoon tomorrow you will see blue sky. tomorrow is a first alert day for everything we just talked about and it is happening primarily in the morning and we have to deal with the implications of it through the late morning and early afternoon in terms of impacts on the road and minor flooding. there is another

storm coming our way, there is a couple actually. you may have heard this now, the conversations are going. we are getting a train of storms. this is the main one, another comes in on thursday and it does not look that big. the next storm after that comes in on new year's eve day. that saturday. that is not as impressive tonight and tomorrow but more impressive than thursday. if you want to play the game of going beyond that we will stay in the storm track for the next 10 days possibly but we will let those resolved in the models. this is our first alert day for a reason and we want to make sure you're focused on that for tomorrow morning. over to you. next in sports. thompson was extra thankful to be playing on christmas and the nfl coach that said goodbye to his team after 15 games.
