captioning funded by cbs good morning. i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. much of the nation is still under the deadly grip of the powerful arctic blast. at least 50 people have died in the severe weather, and there are fears that number could rise. rescue crews are still struggling to reach trapped residents in buffalo, new york. the city is covered in thick blankets of snow and ice. a travel ban remains in place there. jarred hill is in new york. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, wendy. the mayor of buffalo says this is probably the worst winter storm the city has seen in years. over 50 years. you have blizzard conditions, hurricane-force winds, plus the cold temperatures making for a dangerous lingering situation there. meanwhile travel holiday headaches are not over for people across the country.

it's almost unreal. a restaurant in western new york by lake erie is covered in heavy snow and icicles. >> it's pretty heavy. that's what i'm nervous about. but nothing broke. no windows broke. >> reporter: a driving ban remained in effect in nearby buffalo overnight where cars are still buried under deep snow drifts. thousands are without power, and another foot of snow is expected >> anyone who declares victory and says it's over, it is way too early to say. it is still a dangerous situation to be out. >> reporter: president biden has declared a state of emergency for new york state as the death toll there continues to climb. the mayor of jackson, mississippi, meanwhile, also has issued an emergency declaration for his city after frigid temperatures caused pipes to burst, leaving some residents without water. >> the infrastructure concerning the water has been bad like this for years. it's no surprise the water turned out like it did for christmas. >> reporter: flight cancellations and frustrations continued to mount.

southwest airlines alone canceled over 700 flights on monday. that's according to flighflight. southwest has apologized and says it's working to get service back to normal. the u.s. department of transportation now says it will examine whether the cancellations were avoidable and if southwest is complying with its customer service plan and other federal rules. now, this morning nearly 3,000 flights are canceled for today according to flightaware. wendy, the vast majority are on southwest. back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thanks. >> sure. the supreme court could rule today on the pandemic-era border policy that's been used to turn back asylum seekers, this as the white house is blasting governor greg abbott for bussing migrants to claire's house in washington

on christmas eve. the biden administration called the move cruel and dangerous. migrant aid groups were also critical. >> there is a way to do what texas is doing in a way that preserves humanity, providing them with warm meals, letting us know when the buses are coming ahead of time. >> a spokesperson for governor abbott called the biden administration hypocrites, saying its immigration policies have overwhelmed texas border towns. new york republican congressman george santos is admitting he has lied about his background but says he is not a criminal. last week there were questions raised concerning his education and employment history. in two separate interviews he admitted to never working for citigroup or goldman sachs. he also said he never graduated from college despite saying he had. santos said a lot of people overstate their resumes. a fourth electrical substation was found vandalized in washington state.

officials initially said three substations were attacked on christmas day in the tacoma area. power was cut to as many as 14,000 customers, but electricity has now been fully restored. in all four cases the sheriff's office says someone broke into fenced in areas and damaged the equipment. >> nothing was stolen from any of those facilities, so there's a good possibility they are related. >> authorities say they're monitoring all substations. they're also asking residents who live near those substations to check their surveillance cameras for suspicious activities. overseas taiwan could expand announce today it will expand its compulsory military service from four months to one year following continues threats from ch china. taiwan says between sunday and monday, china sent 71 warplanes and seven ships toward the

self-ruled island in a show of force. china is believed to be reacting in part to the taiwan-related provisions in the most recent u.s. defense spending bill. a ukrainian drone attacked an air base hundreds of miles inside russian. killing three russian personnel on the ground. ian lee reports from kyiv. >> reporter: a security camera appears to capture the final moments of a ukrainian drone deep inside russian territory. the russians claim to have shot it down, with the falling debris killing three soldiers. the target appears to be engels air base more than 300 miles from the border of ukraine and home to long-range strategic bombers. it's the second time this base was targeted. state tv reacted to the attack with a warning. she says russia will seek revenge by launching more strikes against ukrainian infrastructure.

but on christmas eve, russia gave no excuse for shelling kherson, killing civilians. this is something not lost on ukraine's jewish community as it celebrates hanukkah. victoria german tells me putin is a nazi and is the only person who needs to be destroyed. the family felt safe in ukraine until russian troops invaded last february. the residents of ukraine quickly evacuated them and eventually returned to the land they love. >> do you blame putin and russia for doing this? >> i want to kill him. >> reporter: russian president vladimir putin now says he's ready to negotiate with everyone in ukraine.

a pilot is rescued from a frozen creek after a plane crash, and confederate monuments are removed from a u.s. military academy. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports the u.s. academy at west point is removing confederate monuments from its campus. that includes a portrait of general robert e. lee and his confederate uniform and a stone bust of lee. they're also removing a bronze plaque, confederate figures, and an image of a hooded figure with the words "ku klux klan." the defense department ordered the removal after the congressional panel identified 13 items representing the confederacy. "the washington post" says witnesses to a plane crash rescued a pilotm k d. he crashed shortly after takeoff. three people including an off-duty officer used kayaks

to skim across the ice-covered creek to reach the downed plane. the 71-year-old pilot was the only person on the plane. he got out of the cockpit and stood on the wing of the sinking plane as the kayakers approached. >> eventually i got him onto the ice. he was on the kayak. he was out of the water and safe, and then at that point, i knew he was going to be fine. >> another boat arrived and took the pilot to the hospital. he had non-life-threatening injuries. and reuters says arizona governor elect katie hobbs asked the court to sanction election denier cakari lake. hobbs defeated lake in last month's election, but lake claimed there was voter fraud. hobbs, arizona's secretary of state, joined a motion by maricopa county to impose a financial penalty on lake for what prosecutors called her nd still to come, are you feeling lucky? the mega millions drawing is

netflix is developing a new production studio and mcdonald's fully operated. victoria kealy has that and more in today's "moneywatch" report. wall street reopens today after the christmas holiday. stocks closed higher last friday. the dow gained 176 points. the nasdaq climbed 21 points, and the s&p 500 was up 22 points. adidas is scrambling to sell $530 million of yeezys according to the "financial times." they cut its ties with can yeah west in october also known as ye after his anti-semitic remarks and hate speech. it will continue to tell the sneakers without the branding. cutting ties cost adidas more than $250 million in profits in 2022. netflix is buying a former new jersey army base for $55 million and turning it into a state-of-the-art production facility. it's investing up to $850 million into what will be the largest facilities in the world. the plan will be to have 12 sound stages, production spaces,
