anne-marie green. southwest airlines expects minimal disruptions as we head into the new year's holiday weekend. the airline has canceled about 40 flights so far today after scrapping more than 13,000 since the meltdown began last thursday. southwest also vowed to reimburse stranded travelers. the biden administration has threatened to penalize the airline if it does not follow through. jarred hill is in new york. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, wendy. the secretary of transportation has threatened southwest with tens of thousands of dollars in fines per violation per affected passenger if they don't provide proper compensation for all the folks who are stranded by what many are calling a system wide meltdown for southwest. today is the first real test if they're ready to get things back on track. some passengers in dallas flashed a smile while making their way through the airport. but the misery felt by an estimated 1 million travelers

whose flights were canceled or delayed this week is definitely on their minds. >> i was really considering canceling. i kept looking and it kept saying my flight was going to be on time. i said, that's great. so i'll go on and take a chance. >> reporter: southwest airlines says it realigned its crews and fleet and expects to return to normal operations today after scrapping another 2300 flights on thursday. the airline also said it will refund all canceled flights and urged, quote, customers to submit refund and reimbursement requests for meals, hotel and alternate transportation. experts say that could cost the company tens millions of dollars. >> the u.s. department of transportation has your back. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg tweeted a message to southwest customers, promising to hold the airline accountable and encouraging affected travelers to reach out to his department. >> i'm assigning u.s. dot resources to follow through on every complaint that comes in,

$772 billion for domestic programs and $858 billion towards defense. six years worth of former president donald trump's tax returns are set to go public today. the democratic-controlled house ways and means committee plans to release trump's personal and business returns with irs audit materials. they cover 2015 through 2020, from when trump was running for president through his time in office. it follows the three-year legal battle to obtain the returns. catholics around the world are offering prayers for pope emeritus benedict. yesterday, the vatican said the 95-year-old former pontiff is lucid and stable, but his condition remains serious. on wednesday, pope francis revealed that benedict is very ill. the vatican later said his health had deteriorated. doctors are closely monitoring him. >> it is a very first time that the pope francis talked about

the pope benedict like that, using these words, saying that he's very ill. so we can take it as a very serious sign. >> in 2013, benedict became the first pontiff to resign in 600 years, citing his advanced age. this morning, the world is paying tribute to two icons. one a legendary fashion designer, the other a sports pioneer like no other. >> i got the gift from god to play football. >> brazilian soccer legend pele died yesterday after a battle with colon cancer. for more than 60 years, his name has been synonymous with soccer. he played in four world cups, starting at the age of 17 and is the only player in history to win three. pele was 82 years old. and style icon vivienne westwood has died at the age of 81.

a representative for westwood said she died peacefully yesterday surrounded by family in london. a cause of death was not disclosed. the trailblazing british fashion designer is best known for bringing provocative punk style to high fashion. she started her career in the 1970s and went on to host runway shows in london, paris, milan and new york. turning to ukraine, the country's military says russia launched 16 drones towards kyiv overnight. it says all were destroyed by ukraine's air defenses. it comes a day after russian forces launched its largest wave of missiles and drones in weeks. ian lee reports. >> reporter: each missile and drone russia fires carries death as its source to its target. every one intercepted is a triumph of life. russia launched dozens of missiles today, hoping to

overwhelm ukraine's defenses. most were shot down, officials say, but some made it through. one destroyed three homes in zaporizhzhia. while in kyiv, fragments from one shot down demolished this home, along with its memories. we heard the explosions and started running to the cellar. my 7-year-old son and i barely made it, this woman says. russia's attack echoed across the capital. an early wake-up call to the people of kyiv. the defense ministry's office posted this picture of a rocket that flew straight into someone's home but fortunately failed to detonate. for the people of kyiv, the subway has almost become a second home, a safe place, underground to take shelter while russia rains terror from above. president zelenskyy addressed the nation, vowing to restore power to millions across the country impacted by the strikes.
