great a barrier with the sandbags. >> now at 11:00 o'clock, the storm ramping up and those in the north bay hoping history won't release itself. kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> you thought sara donchey was going to come walking out. nope, i'm reed cowan and i'm filling in for sara donchey tonight and it is a wet one. there are watches across the bay area. you are looking at the result of the atmospheric river bringing drenching rain and whipping winds. we have cameras all over the place. soaked pavement everywhere. ripe conditions for hydro planing. if you have to leave the house, be extra careful out there on the road. so here is what we are talking about.

whipping blustery winds. the sound of san francisco tonight. all right, so darren peck is in. you've had a busy night my >> willraier and hours so prud let me show you why tomorrow is the first alert day. all that stuff reed showed you is not factored in as part of the main event. we are getting rain. but watch how the nature of this changes the next few hours as we approach midnight, we start to see an organized line. and if we take a look at the big picture, and take that and play it forward into the predawn hours things look a little more impressive. the brighter the shade of color, the heavier the rain. that is a steady flow from the art of the atmospheric river pointed at us. the analogy that works well is a

hose. played right at the bay. it is going right over the heart of the east bay. then, it gets down to the south bay but doesn't get there until the late morning early afternoon. that is the most impressive part of this three-day period. we will probably get another inch-and-a-half on average. so, there is a flood watch i want to talk to you about what that means and, what you should take into consideration in terms of this for tomorrow morning in the complete first alert forecast coming up in a bit. >> all right darren i'm on the edge of my seat. let's talk about this. tonight, people living near that glass fire burn scar in sonoma county, we know you are trying to keep your home safe. specifically this right here. in of course of 2021, that burn scar caused major flooding. that is somebody's neighborhood right there. da lin is in santa rosa with a look at how many of you are working to prepare. >> reporter: it has been like this pretty much all day in santa rosa. light steady rain

for the most part. most people are worried about the overnight hours when the rain is supposed to rain really hard. this father son team filling up the sandbags in the rain. peter and his son luka are trying to prevent the garage from flooding. >> we are just trying to create a barrier with the sandbags which prevents the water coming into our garage. >> reporter: they weren't alone, the santa rosa sandbag station was busy on friday. many people trying to keep their homes dry. peter took eight backs hoping it will do the trick. >> last time we had an atmospheric river, we thought hey let's be proactive and use sandbags. >> reporter: the backyard is a little higher than the garage door entrance so when it rains a lot, the rain goes inside. >> and the rain causes the flooding which came right through the door in our garage. as a stopgap measure, i got the towel and i just pretty much

placed the towel in place so it is a bit of a band aid. i'm open hoping with the handbags i solve the problem. >> reporter: further east in the glass fire burn scar areas, the santa rosa fire department is worried about mud slides and debris flows. >> until those hills stabilize and we get the regrowth that we need, they are still susceptible to significant rain events. >> reporter: paul with the fire department says the glass fire burn scar caused this flooding in october, 2021. even though the bennett valley neighborhood is miles away from the burn scar, streets and homes were underwater due to the flooding of a nearby creek. >> when the creek fills up, a lot of our tributary creeks that flow into that can't do it as easily as they typically would because they are being challenged by the volume of water in the larger creek and it leads to back ups in some areas. >> reporter: homeowners say they welcome the rain, just not one after the other.

>> i keep the gutters cleaned. just make sure there is any debro and things away from the building. >> reporter: the santa rosa fire department says no major issues with the glass fire burn scar in the recent storms. they will keep a close eye on it overnight. >> that is da lin reporting. in santa rosa, look close right there. you can see the crews are having to deal with the sink hole along highway 12 near dutton avenue. that's a stretch of westbound lane and we understand it will stay closed until 9:00 a.m. also the rain causing mud slides in alameda county. look at that. that is a stretch of niles canyon road between fremont and sanole. it is back open after the slide blocked the road for hours. the lights are also back on in oakland hills after another slide in the wood minister neighborhood knocked out power , a tragedy ts cokilled in a rock

fall at yosemite national park. this happened tuesday. we are e ram along highway 140 near big oak flat road. the rocks fell about a thousand feet and pushed the car off the road and down into an embankment of the merced river. it killed 51-year-old george stiacros and 31-year-old ming yen. it closed down one of the park entrances for four hours. tonight, park officials say another rock slide has cut off yet another yosemite entrance. so right now, we can tell you, you cannot get into yosemite from highway 120 or anywhere from the west. we will watch that and keep you posted. in the north bay, well, look at that. that was a mess from a rock slide. seven cars affected on highway 101 in marin county. that one happened on the waldo grade. our friends up in marin, we know you are

hunkering down, seeing a lot of rain and bracing for the stronger winds. shawn chitnis is there out there in the soup right now to look at the preparations. >> reporter: we are in marin county where we have seen steady rainfall all evening including in places like this shopping center in novato. people were coming to get whatever supplies they need ahead of the holiday weekend. a messy commute home friday night along the 101 as people were eager to get out of the rain and get ready for new year's eve. ashley lane was one of those residents trying to be extra cautious. >> i have been driving slower. a lot of people have been driving crazy. >> reporter: she is excited to welcome 2023 with plenty of food at home hoping to avoid any of the rush saturday in town. >> last minute errands so i don't have to come out tomorrow at all. >> reporter: public health leaders say the impact of the storm night after night has pushed them to open their

severe weather shelter again. thursday and friday night, the temperature or amount of rain required it. >> for those of us with the privilege of housing to recognize there are many in our community who don't have that. >> reporter: it is our third time this month marin county has opened an overnight shelter. less than 10 people checked in this evening. about a dozen shows up the night before. lane donby said he was ready to stay in the rain another night but worry about others unable to find a place dry. >> i feel bad for a lot of the people that are out there. >> reporter: and the additional rain expected next week has some residents saying they will do more of the same in the new year to keep everyone safe. >> i look out for others on the road. you have to drive for yourself and others so that's what i'm doing. >> reporter: the fire department here in marin county wants to remind resident withs this kind of consistent rainfall, that increases the chances of downed trees including those that could hit power lines. shawn chitnis there. stay with kpix5 continuing first alert weather coverage through the evening and the weekend. we need to stay tuned for this.

tonight, there's a break in the case that shocked the nation. a suspect has been arrested for the november murders of four university of idaho students killed in a brutal murder. bryan kohberger was arrested. >> reporter: he was apprehended at his parent's home early friday morning 2500 miles from the murder scene. >> this is the first bit of joy we have had in close to seven weeks. we hope they picked the right guy and that gives us hope and we haven't had hope for a long time. >> reporter: the four roommates were stabbed multiple times as they slept inside their rental

home near the university of idaho campus. cbs news has learned forensic analysis allegedly linked the suspect to the crime scene in moscow, idaho. police say they have not located the murder weapon but have found the hyundai that was spotted near the murder scene. and they won't say whether the suspect and victims knew each other. university of idaho president scott green says there is finally a feeling of relief on his campus. >> we never lost faith that this case would be solved and are grateful for the hard work of the moscow police department and their partners. >> reporter: kohberger is a criminology community at washington state university just over the state line. >> let's come back to the bay area. the chp is looking for you if you plan on driving impaired as you ring in the new year. to get home safely, transit agencies are stepping forward in our community. they are extending their hours. cal train will be free 8:00 p.m. on

ward and bart will run extra trains until 2:00 a.m. sunday. and if you go out to party, there is a big concern about party drugs laced with deadly fentanyl. fent check is working with more than 50 bars and venues in san francisco and oakland providing them with these. these are test strips you can use to test party drugs for fentanyl. you can find the venues that carry the test strips. let's go outside live once again. the city of san francisco urging all of us not to use illegal fireworks. instead, there will be a city sanctioned show tomorrow. so, darren, we'll have more rain on the way, but will the rain hinder fireworks? >> it will be gone and there will be a nice neat clear back edge to this whole thing when it comes through. you will see it by sunset tomorrow. you will get clear skies. the fireworks, new year's eve plans are fine.

it is between now and sunset and 10:00 tomorrow morning when we have the main issues from the storm. you can see the light showers we have been showing you with live pictures so far this whole newscast. here is how it will get different. in the overnight hours. we look at this as the top of the newscast. just another replay. we will pull out more detail when you can see when the heaviest rain comes through. here is 5:30. your strongest wind, you will get 40 miles per hour wind gusts. this is the kind of thing that can wake you up when it comes through. between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. if is not the rain, it could be the wind. by the time we good morning to 10:30 tomorrow, north bay is done. and we continue to move that through the rest of the south bay and it will clear out and the stragglers are not done until sunset tomorrow. rainfall

totals from that period. from this point all the way ahead until tomorrow. late tomorrow night. concord, two-and-a-half inches. san jose, san francisco. these are the numbers we get tomorrow. today is a pretty rainy day. san francisco got three quarters of an inch. there is a lot more coming tomorrow by comparison. most of it will come at a narrow window in the morning. the flood watch stays in effect until tomorrow night. the two main concerns we have been talking about, the streams and creeks, the tributaries, those will be the concerns and also the roads. ponding of water. low lying intersections. clogged gutters. all that could be a problem anywhere. that is random. clogged gutters could be anywhere. and low lying intersections can pose problems. there is your wind. you can see the clearly defined back edge as we get to late

morning. the strongest of the wind will begin to subside. there's the line. th advisothin discabt th paicul st itis ekend. probably lot of travel s.nybogoing over the sierra, you would think they are getting feet of snow. they are not. it's all rain. the snow level right now is like 9,000 feet. that's ridiculously warm. so it is raining on the passes. it is raining at the ski resorts. it will continue to rain overnight until right here. colder air filters in tomorrow morning. and then, the snow starts to work its way down to about the 5,000-foot level. so it is just at the tail end of this storm that the snow starts falling. doesn't begin until 2:00 a.m. if the computer wanted to cooperate, i could show you how that plays out. we have our first alert day here. coming up toward the end of the newscast, we will talk about wednesday

week looks interesting. that's tomorrow's storm. we already know about that one. let's play this forward as we look at the pacific as a whole. the next one is coming our way on monday. not that big a deal. probably half an inch out of that one. but the one after that looks impressive. that one has all the right stricture to it. you can see the area of low pressure wound up in the gulf here. that one is likely to deliver rainfall. there is another one that comes in after that. a week from tomorrow. another system behind that one. and then perhaps, if you wanted to keep playing that game, we could keep going. we are not going to do that. it is foolish to look at those beyond seven days. that's the potential in terms of next week. that's the early heads up. we will focus on that coming up. >> that is why our
