[ cheers ] plus, the world welcomes 2023 from the land down under to asia and beyond. new york getting ready for its biggest celebration in years. >> oh, i've always seen it on tv, so i decided to be here today. and later, the rubik's cube fast approaching 50. why the color-matching puzzle is showing no signs of aging. >> whenever i'm bored and i don't know what to do, i just play with this. >> announcer: this is the "cbs weekend news" from new york with adriana diaz. good evening. there is only one pope today. benedict xvi died today ending an unprecedented decade in which the catholic church had two living popes, one reigning, one retired.

in 2013 benedict became the first pope in 600 years to resign saying that at age 85, he was no longer up to the job. his successor, pope francis, is 86. the path could be clear now for him to step down. cbs' chris livesay is in rome tonight with more on the death of the german-born pope and his impact on the worldwide church. chris, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. with benedict's death in unchartered waters because he was not a sitting pope, however, we do know that starting monday his body will be lying in state, and on thursday pope francis will preside over his funeral here at the vatican, which benedict continued to call home after he shocked the world in 2013 and resigned. nothing defined benedict xvi's pontificate so clearly as its ending with his majestic farewell flight over the eternal city. benedict had become the first pope in more than 600 years to

resign. [ speaking non-english ] he said his mental and physical strength had deteriorated to the point that he had to "recognize my incapacity to fulfill the ministry entrusted to me." [ cheers ] he became pope at age 78. born joseph ratzinger in a small germantown in 1927, he was forced to join the hitler youth at age 14, and in 1943 was conscripted into an anti-aircraft unit in the german army. he deserted and was taken prisoner by the americans. he entered the priesthood after the war, rose to become a cardinal and earned the nickname "god's rottweiler" as a rigid enforcer of church policy. critics hit out at his slow response to the decades of cover-up of the scandal of sexual abuse by priests and then came the scandal of leaked documents that disclosed corruption and mismanagement in the vatican. still, he initiated some of the

changes the next pope, francis, would later get credit for. he began the reform of vatican finances and was the first pope to meet with victims of sex abuse and to publicly apologize condemning what he called "filth in the church." when he was 94, a new scandal would threaten his legacy, accusations of misconduct in his handling of sex abuse cases more than four decades earlier when he was archbishop of munich. benedict's lawyers denied any cover-up, and benedict asked for forgiveness. a scholar who had wanted nothing more than to hide in academia, benedict made an indelible mark on the church and history when he became the pope who decided it was time to go. adriana, with benedict's death, francis is finally the only pope here, but for how long? he revealed earlier this month that he already has his own resignation letter ready to submit if his own health ever impedes his work. pope benedict was 85 years old

ever to co-anchor a network evening newscast earning $1 million a year in 1976, more than any anchor ever, male or female. she went on to co-host "20/20" as well as barbara walters specials. >> what will you tell your cildren? >> mommy made a big mistake. >> reporter: walters was married four times to three men and is survived by her daughter jacqueline. >> i had had three miscarriages, and my husband and i decided that we would adopt a child. >> reporter: at 67, an age when many retire, she created "the view," a show that changed the landscape of daytime televisio. in 2014, when she did retire, she spoke to gayle king. >> barbara, there's not a woman on tv today that can't look back and say, if it wasn't you, then there wouldn't be me, and that's the most important thing to you as you sit here? >> it is the most important thing to me.

that's what will continue. >> she busted open the door and held it open for so many of us. thank you, barbara. now to ukraine. today air raid sirens blared in kyiv as russia launched new attacks across ukraine. missiles rained down on several targets devastating this neighborhood near the capital. also today, vladimir putin raised a toast to russian troops, thanking the military for its "strength of spirit and courage." he also launched new verbal attacks against the west. tonight there are new details about the suspect charged with the brutal murders of four students in idaho. 28-year-old bryan kohberger was arrested at his parents' home friday. danya bacchus is in moscow, idaho, we have the latest. good evening. >> reporter: good evening. kohberger could be back here in moscow as early as next week. his attorney says he is willing to waive his extradition hearing. the arrest bringing comfort to the rattled community. after nearly seven weeks of uncertainty, residents of

moscow, idaho, now feeling at ease. >> i think it was pretty unnerving and scary for people. >> reporter: the college community relieved after an arrest in the deadly stabbings of four university of idaho students, a crime that seemed to mystify police. >> now we're sharing the energy of hope that we've -- you know, this huge moment has happened. it's not going to go unsolved. >> reporter: moscow police are confident, they say, that 28-year-old kohberger is the killer. authorities zeroed in on the criminology student and arrested him thursday more than 2,500 miles away at his parents' home in pennsylvania. >> i looked at the picture, and i was like -- i couldn't believe who it was. i was bryan kohberger. i would text him, hey, want to go for a run? >> reporter: police have not found the murder weapon but did recover the white hyundai elantra they say kohberger used to drive cross-country from washington state university where he lived and attended school. the university is less than 20 minutes from moscow. friday investigators searched his apartment. >> we are still looking for all

pieces of evidence. >> reporter: even with the arrest, authorities say the investigation is far from over. they're still asking for tips about the suspect from anyone who knows him. school officials say kohberger continued going to classes and finished the semester before driving home to pennsylvania. his attorney tells us that kohberger was shocked but calm by his arrest. adriana? >> danya bacchus, thank you. it is a soggy start to the new year across much of the country, but in california, it's extreme. heavy rain is causing widespread flooding along the coast shutting down two major highways. rain is also expected in the east, but the good news is that temperatures are expected to be above average. here in new york, the new year's eve celebration and the crowds are returning after two years of scaled-back festivities. we are in times square tonight. hi, charlie. >> reporter: hi, adriana. happy new year to you. we, of course, are still hours

friday's closing bell marks the end of trading but not the end of the bear market. all three indices suffered their worst losses since 2008. workers' bonuses were slashed, and retirees saw their savings shrink. cryptocurrencies crashed after flirting with mainstream step stance. fraud charges followed. unemployment remains low at 3.7%. but the pandemic driven real estate boom is over. the federal reserve raised interest rates crushing demand as intended. the median price of a home this year, now more than $398,000, up nearly 10% from last year, and pump prices have finally declined after a wild ride. they surged after russia's invasion of ukraine crossing $5 a gallon for the first time ever in june. they're now back to a number that starts with 3. still ahead on the "cbs weekend news," it's a new year and a new congress. we'll look back at a house member who left his mark after a life of activism.

republicans will take control of the u.s. house, and dozens of legislators will depart. among them a man who arrived as a 1960s activist. here's cbs' scott macfarlane. >> reporter: a chicago political legend, bobby rush, helped firm control of a seat in the u.s. house for 30 years. >> the subcommittee on energy will now come to order. >> reporter: with a back story unlike any other. in the '60s he co-founded the illinois chapter of the black panthers and says he was supposed to be in an apartment r raided by police in 1969 in which fellow members of the group were shot and killed by police. once in congress he made a mark legislating but also by protesting including breaking u.s. house rules by donning a hoodie on the floor of the house after the shooting of trayvon martin. >> just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum. >> reporter: in his final months in office, russia secured passage of a landmark
