from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. as soon as we walked in we were like, were we robbed? >> it was the weather. not a great way to start out the new year's. floodwaters wrecking bay area businesses, leaving them stuck with the bill. live from cbs studios in san francisco this sunday night i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andria nakano. the bay area is trying out after a weekend walloping from the storm and there is another one on the way. plenty of damage to deal with left before the storm comes in. the storm left people floating in the street in san francisco, and even caused levees to fail in sacramento county. >> sums and disco restaurants and workspaces were trashed with dirty floodwaters that damaged expensive equipment. betty yu shows us what a

number of businesses are dealing with, tonight. >> reporter: we are on 14th street here in the mission district, and it is not uncommon to see piles of trash outside small businesses. as you can see at this hour, there are still workers busy trying to clean up the mess. >> reporter: the scenes were dramatic but some people were spotted floating down 14th street. others tried to scoot through the flooded road. another person waded through thigh high waters with their belongings on saturday. the pink onion was submerged in water. the storm wrecked virtually all their equipment and workers said while the reo one from the city showed up to help. >> >> we could not clean the grease because a lot of the grease from the streets flowed into the restaurant. and then all the damage. >> reporter: a cook said he

came into healthy business, and the spots down the street, by cleaning the storm drains himself, and pumping standing water out of the restaurant. >> the worst damage was all the electric equipment, the fridge, the walk-in freezer, the fridge for all the stuff, it's gone. >> reporter: cars outside the business, like this one, are completely damaged by the water. feliciano said so much trash has surfaced across the street, including hypodermic needles. >> my desk is 20 or 30 feet that way but everything underneath my desk is now in bathroom b. >> reporter: bruce works of his disco tech company. he believes he will be cleaning up into february. >> is and as we walked in we thought, were we robbed? or was this the weather? what is happening in here? it is so surreal because you can see where the water line stops. the floor looked like a forest floor. we have 300 pound machines turned on their side.

>> reporter: the national weather service said saturdays storm made for the second wettest day in the 170+ years of records at its site. >> i come from the east coast where we are used to rain and flooding all the time. basements get destroyed. i have never been used to this much rain in this city. >> reporter: tech companies have workers that can login remotely but small businesses like pink onion don't have that option. feliciano said after the holiday break, it was scheduled to reopen in the new year on tuesday. that will not be the case anymore. >> i was worried, because it will take more days to fix it, more days to open it. >> there is more on the way. we will talk about that in a bit but imagine being home and seeing this. a mess of him mud and floodwater. da lin spoke with a san francisco man who tried to fight the rising tide of the storm. >> reporter: this is one of the major streets that remains shut down for cesar chavez of pennsylvania. it has been

flooded for more than 24 hours. it is slowly receding but the water is a couple of feet deep. this is one of many problem spots throughout the city. >> reporter: from flooded homes to downed trees, storm damage overwhelmed many sentences go families and first responders. >> unbelievable. i've never seen this in my life. >> reporter: water damage forced the city to red tag for houses, including german reverses home. >> it is unsafe to stay in the house for now. >> reporter: the flooding happened saturday morning. >> you can picture yourself . >> reporter: rain and mud from a mountain rushed down the hillside and into four homes. german recorded this video of his backyard. >> the amount, and the force, it was coming in with debris and rocks, and everything. >> reporter: a few inches of water covered the floors of all four neighboring houses. water was coming through the ceilings and staircases. this was the water trapped behind their homes . san francisco

firefighters went into each home and use sandbags to create a channel and release the water. >> it was frustrating, i was trying to do the best that i can and i couldn't because the water was so much. so much. >> reporter: most of the water is gone, but plenty of mud remains in his house. >> this is going away. the floor has to be out completely, and we are going to tear the walls down, also. >> reporter: he is not alone. in the mission district, water flooded the area at 15th and folsom streets on saturday. some people use dessert boards to get away from the water park many families spent sunday cleaning, drying out, and throwing out furniture and appliances. over on detroit street in the sunnyside neighborhood, a large tree resting on a house and truck. the homeowner says the tree damaged the roof and broke a skylight. on juanita way behind matt davidson park, a small mudslide blocks one lane. as

for german, his family is staying with relatives as they begin the long rebuilding process. >> we can see here, we are hurting, and we can start over. start over. >> reporter: public works officials are asking for patients. loof incidents, and it will take them days to clean everything up. >> the first week of january is usually the busiest time for gyms, but mx three fitness in the castro has to deal with flood damage instead of new customers. workers have to alm wall needs replacing. the gym owner tells us the landlord promised to cover the repairs, but, they still have to deal with the loss in revenue. the new year is also getting off to a bad start for the oakland zoo. flooding is forcing the zoo to close for at least three weeks. here's a look at the aftermath from yesterday's storm. the excess water is causing soil erosion at the zoo. staff members say this sinkhole was caused by the

culvert and all the region over the past few days. the zoo will not reopen until january 17th at the earliest. in the santa cruz mountains, parts of highway 9 were completely washed away. check out that huge sinkhole cutting off the roadway. that could take a while to fix. however, caltrans has managed to reopen highway 9 at boulder creek, tonight with one-way traffic control. crews are still removing downed trees, and the highway is still closed between the paradise exit and glengarry road. brian? >> the peninsula is also hard-hit. crews have been clearing side wicks sidewalks and streets all day today. the bay area has had its share of damage after the storm but what happened here in the central valley near sacramento was epic. strong video of a levee break , and the levee breaks and floodwaters across 99, the main artery for the central valley from sacramento through

bakersfield. people got stuck along 99, even a servpro truck responding to disasters could not get through. people were pulled from the water and the roofs of their cars sitting in that on 99. one person died after being pulled from the water, rescue crews could not reach the other driver in time. which reese spoke to one woman trapped in the floodwater for hours. >> previously at the elko fire department for 21 years, this is the most significant flooding that i have seen in those areas . >> reporter: after the report of a missing person last seen driving in the area last night, crews launched a search this morning. >> with water levels as high as they are, and the unique nature of the fast-moving water that we have right now going over roadways, it is pretty risky for personnel and civilians. >> reporter: the fire department says they found the department -- the car they were looking for but it was underwater d to be

rescued like danielle habits. >> if i had known what would happen last night i would have stayed home. >> reporter: she said it had stopped raining when she headed north on highway 99 from stockton to get to sacramento for a comedy show. >> i was just driving, and excited about the new year. i had taken slc, i had bought a new cat and i was wearing my hat, thinking i was cute, going to the comedy show. >> reporter: she did not realize the danger she was in until it was too late. >> we couldn't see anything. there was a truck ahead of us, and when the truck went through, two other cars went and then i was the third car, and by the time that i got to where i could see , we had dropped off into the river area, and the freeway was underwater. >> it was 12:30 in the morning. four hours later, she was rescued, leaving her car behind. >> i was trying to call and file a claim with aaa. i was on hold with them all day. since i have been up, it's not the way that i thought i would

start this new year, but i am thankful to still be here. in other news tonight, oakland authorittingat left one peon ad this was shot killed on the 6900 block of international boulevard just before 2:30. police say about an hour later, a second gunshot victim was brought to a hospital in the area. they say he was also shot on the 6900 block of international boulevard. the second victim is expected to survive. coming up, an incredible scene at an airport in santa cruz county. what we are learning tonight about the pilot in this crash. d÷j÷ vu for another california community rattled by a destructive leg. plague. we have a day luge of rain and sierra snow, but did it put a dent in our drought? >> it did and we have more on the way to get another big storm coming later in the

crashing down into the ground at an almost 90 degree angle. the pilot had moderate injuries, and is likely expected to be okay. no one else was injured. in northern california town recovering from a destructive 6.4 magnitude quake was hit with another jolt, today. a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck about nine miles from the dell. it was strong enough to damage several homes . the last big quake hit about two weeks ago on december 20th, and killed two people. rio dell suffered the most damage in that quake, forced the shutdown of the water supply, and left about 100 homes damaged. now to first alert weather. incredible video of the floodwaters these past couple of days would have been pouring in. viewer jason mauer took video of kayakers paddling through a flooded alameda street. in contra costa county, we sent john ramis to

danville, where residents are reeling from the flood damage and are bracing for more to come. >> reporter: what a difference a day makes. after saturday's daylong deluge in the bay area, sund d nny thue ieand bright road but the work is just gard as mberwhat herd look hourea it was comply water rk it s we . >> reporter: the entire street was inundated. you can see the water line on this mailbox, and this car was submerged up to its steering wheel. greg foley has a photo of his son trying to unclog his stormed drain while standing in waist deep water. he is frustrated that there was no effort by the city to clear the drains before the predicted storm. >> i think we were all upset that it could have been better.

could have been better. >> reporter: much of the area's damage occurred near san ramon creek. this is what it looks like yesterday. a raging river that mike burns says was too much for the system to handle. he and his wife watched as the creek running through san ramon golf course began to rise. >> at 11:30, it was just about the crest, and about an hour later of crusted over the whole highway and just went through. >> reporter: that sent a river of water running down the street into the seniors community. here, too, the storm drains were clogged with debris. >> it was awful clogged, so the water rose. peout there in the middle of the day during clearing the drains. >> reporter: the low point of the neighborhood was this condo

complex. as the water began driving, sue curtis realized she was stuck. >> we couldn't get out, there was no way without swimming. >> reporter: as first responders went door-to-door, they realized they needed help, so they called in an unusual rescue vehicle. the police departments bearcat armored vehicle, usually used by the s.w.a.t. team arrived to carry sue and her neighbors to safety. >> were you surprised to see this tank coming down your sidewalk? >> they had told us that they were going to go get something like that but i didn't think it would be that big. it certainly looks dirty. >> reporter: canal, the storm has passed and the cleanup has begun. but, martin grimm says it is hard to believe what happened on saturday. >> and then, look up today, bright sunshine, freeze, you would have never known yesterday was yesterday. >> reporter: but, with another storm predicted for later this week, there are those who wonder if yesterday was just the beginning. >> yesterday was just the beginning. we have more rain coming in tomorrow. not as much as what happened over the weekend, that is later in the we so, a t week ahead. right now, numbers are fairly mild in the bay area,

beautiful blue skies, today, and that is important after rain like this. 72 hour totals, almost 10 inches of rain in the mountains, from los gatos and oakland, 4/10 of an inch of rain. san francisco's second all-time 24 hour amount , 5.94 inches and those records date back to the earliest in california, back to the gold rush. you know something weird was happening, and it was. tomorrow, we get a much more typical storm, with fast-moving rain slamming the bay area. midday for the bay area. then, a bit of a break and more rain coming in, not dissimilar to what happened on friday and saturday. that is coming in on wednesday and thursday. a windy system, a wet system, we have a few days of heads up on that. in the meantime, first things first, let's look at tomorrow. broken clouds or not tomorrow, increasing clouds, then write about midday, into early afternoon, too:15 tomorrow afternoon, fairly good rain

over parts of the bay area. the rain comes down pretty good, but it is a fast-moving storm. it will not stick around, it is out of the bay area by tomorrow night at 7:00. clearing conditions, briefly. in terms of amounts, a third of an inch up to two thirds of an inch. so, not a bad rainmaker. high probability of rain, tuesday night into wednesday night and rain. lingering into thursday, then we did two chances, and it cannot continue next weekend. drain and dry today, very important. as we get successive storms coming into the bay area, it will be easier to ramp up river river levels which will bear watching this week. here is what will happen. tomorrow, rain. powerful wind coming in wednesday and thursday. the wind ramps up

actor jeremy renner is in critical but stable condition after a weather related incident in the reno area. the reno gazette journal reported last month that renner has a house near lake tahoe. a raging storm in the area yesterday left 35,000 homes without power and created the unspecified conditions that injured renner. the two-time oscar nominee is the star of returning paramount plus series the mayor of kingstown, and formally formerly starred in marvel movies. 30 inches of snow over the last 24 hours in soto spring courtesy of the berkeley snow lab. this video came during the peak snowfall yesterday. conditions this morning, calm, clear, and cool, not unlike the bay area. you can see the snow is piling up out there. this is how it looked at tahoe, after the storm cleared. beautiful blue skies, snowdrift piled

sweeter way to welcome the new year than to welcome it along with a new life and a growing family. devin fehely spoke with a couple who likely have the first baby of the year. >> reporter: just after the stroke of midnight in the first few minutes of the new year, alex became parent for the first time, blessed with ezekiel, a baby boy. >> we weren't sure when he was going to come. but, we were getting excited because it was closer to new year's eve and new year's. either would be really cool for him, i think. >> reporter: ezekiel was scheduled to arrive on january 3rd but instead became the first baby born in the kaiser permanente system here in the bay area at 12:06 a.m. his proud parents are virtually newlyweds themselves, married less than a year. >> i feel great. >> we are excited. >> he is a little blessing.

escaping alcatraz through cold and choppy waters, used to be the stuff of legend. >> now it is a beloved new year traditions for the daring folks at the south end rowing club. almost 100 people kicked off 2023 by swimming from the former prison to san francisco. they boated out to alcatraz before sunrise and jumped in the frigid water for the 1 1/4 mile athletic feat. >> the fastest swimmers made it here in 30 minutes, the slowest took over 90 minutes but here is what they said. >> we had about 99 people come out, it was a really fun swim. a bit cold but it was a blast. high tide, a really strong swim. >> that guy seemed amped up and excited. who are we to say why are you doing this? the club said this year was the coldest it has been in the last decade, but that did not stop them. swimmers ranged in age from their 20s into their 80s. so, let that be a lesson to us all.
