this is cbs news bay area with reed callan. breaking news . four people in critical condition after the car fell nearly 300 feet down

this cliffside. the devils slide off of highway 1 in san mateo county. two of the four in the tesla were children. a 4-year-old and 9-year-old. it took dozens of helicopters to get them to safety. still unclear what caused the crash. definitely a hero story. a cleanup time after the big storm . the next major rain that moves in. plus the bay area real estate market was good for markets last year but what about 2023? the outlook if you're looking to buy in the new year. let's start with the first alert weather. a wild weekend of rain. a lot of flooding and cleanup. we have a headline here. that is this. more heavy rain is on the way. showers across part of the bay area right now. let's open up the windows and look outside. this is live in san frsc

tracislook e conditions later this week. >> first thing is first, we have this system moving to the bay area. it's fast. not that much moisture. everybody is getting wet to the tune of 2/10 of an inch. by wednesday and thursday, the next system will be bringing more powerful wind and a good deal of rain. we've got several storms lined up . this is today's and it will be out of here by about 7:00 tonight. after that, it does not look like much now but don't be lulled into a false sense of security. going to tap some sub tropical moisture. nevertheless, packing heavy winds. we could get gusts up to 70 miles per hour and some of the upper elevations on wednesday and thursday. totals of 2 or 3 inches. something like that. we will have more details when we cover the weather. but first it was a mess over the weekend.

hears more from the newsroom on that storm. >> reporter: huge cleanup is underway right now after this weekends powerful storm flooded several parts of the bay area. a lot of people dealing with damage ready for the next round of rain. brian just mentioned workers said this district spent all morning sweeping away floodwater. they had to throw a lot of things away including vacuums that were damaged by the storm. one worker says they were caught by surprise when they came back to work and saw the mess. >> a lot of pressure. big compressors were knocked over. things that were at the front of the studio ended up washed up way in the back. the watermark went up to almost 2 feet and the back of the studio. , paul and salah , boulevard in san carlo was

very deep under the overpass on saturday. no word at this point when the street will reopen. alameda county firefighters and deputies rescued elderly patients from floodwaters at a care facility in castro valley. at least 18 residents received and taken to a nearby church on saturday. as we get this break in the rain, the san francisco fire department for many people to be prepared for the next severe storm or asking people to sweep of any leaves or debris from the sidewalks and storm drains to prevent them from getting clogged. >> thank you so much. we are a community of neighbors. oakland zoo will not be open for two weeks because of that flood damage. all this water caused soil to a road. the sinkhole at the zoo was caused by this collapse but gave way after the rain. the good news is that the animals and staff are doing okay and continuing normal operations inside the zoo even though you

cannot go visit the animals right now. san francisco restaurants are inundated with dirty floodwater. damaged some pretty expensive equipment. betty yu shows us what businesses are dealing with after the storm. >> reporter: the scenes were dramatic. some people spotted floating down 14th street. others tried to skate through the flooded road. another person waited for the high waters with their belongings on saturday. family owned pizza and italian restaurant was submerged in water. the storm wrecked all of their equipment. they reported the flooding to 311, but no one from the city showed up to help. >> we get rental there of the equipment to clean up the water and the debris. there is a lot of debris from the street moving into the restaurant and all the damage. so many. >> reporter: the line cook said he came in to help the business and other spots down the street

by cleaning the storm drains himself and pumping standing water out of the restaurant. >> the worst damage was all of the electric line , the fridge, the walk-in freezer and fridge for all of the stuff. it's gone. >> reporter: cars outside the business, like this one, are completely damaged by water. he also said so much trash has surfaced all over the street including plenty of hypodermic needles. >> my desk is about 20, 30 feet that way. everything that was underneath my desk is now in bathroom b. >> reporter: bruce beck way works at a san francisco tech company. he believes he will be cleaning up onto february. >> we walk in, like where we robbed? is this the weather? it's so surreal. you can see where the water line stops. it was jumanji. we have 300 pound machines turn off to the side. >> the national weather service said saturdays storm made for the second wettest date in the

170 plus years of records at its site. >> i come from the east coast where we are used to rain and flooding all the time. basements get destroyed. i've never been used for this much rain in the city. >> tech companies have workers that can login remotely. small businesses like cancun and do not have the option. feliciano said after a holiday break, it was scheduled to open for the new year on tuesday. that will not be the case anymore. >> i was worried because it will take more days to fix it. it's going to take more days to open. >> the bay area saw its share of storm damage. look at this from the central valley. some extreme scenes. this drone video where floodwaters rushed across highway 99. that's a main artery there. cars got stuck all along 99. the service truck that responds to disasters needed help, too. they cannot get through. people had to go to the roofs of

business, tim describes the market over the last few years as a wild and crazy ride. it has not completely ended . this fixer-upper in palo alto got 11 offers and is poised to sell for around $1.8 million. >> there was a substantial amount of interest because of the location and because it is a midcentury modern. because it is a project and because of the price. >> situations like this that were a norm at the beginning of 2022 have become increasingly uncommon. >> staying on the market for much longer than they have instead of multiple offers , one, maybe two. >> according to the california association of realtors, the home sale decreased from month-to-month for most of the year. prices often throughout the year. inventory has trended upwards for most of the year. >> it's definitely a market adjustment.

>> two major factors from his perspective. >> number one, interest rates. number two, the amount of layoffs in silicon valley have been unprecedented. there is some consumer concern. >> reporter: despite higher interest rates, he believes 2023 will be a good year for buyers. >> they're going to have their pick of much more inventory, much more quality, and much better locations. >> don't be afraid of the market. do not be afraid to jump in. >> that's 2023 buyer advice from sheila can you, the president of the bay east association of realtors. >> i think it is going to be a good opportunity for some buyers who have been priced out and sitting on the sidelines to be able to get back in. >> even with higher interest rates? >> sure, because property values are going to come down a little bit. we are not going to have a collapse of the real estate market. >> i think we are headed for a more healthy market for both buyers and sellers. >> the 2023 advice for sellers? >> real cannot look at a year ago and say, my neighbor got this and i want this. they need to see

spectators on the streets of pasadena for the 134th annual rose.. floral floats and marching bands made the 5.5 mile long journey across the city. the parade has become a tradition for so many people across the country who watch and love it. this family, and real-time, has been camping out on the parade route for 10 years. they have not been camping for 10 years. but they have been doing it for 10 years. you know what i'm saying. >> stay warm. we've got to keep warm. heaters in front of us. heater is behind us. that pretty much keeps the heat trapped on us. >> the rose parade is normally held on january 1, but was moved to that second back due to the long time tradition of never holding it. on a sunday. probably no sweeter way to welcome the new year than two at a number to your family. devon really spoke with a couple who had one of the first babies of the year. >> reporter: after the stroke of midnight in the first few minutes of the new year,

allison and eric became parents for the first time , blessed with a baby boy, ezekiel. >> we were not sure when he was going to come. but we were getting excited as it was getting closer to new year's eve and new year's. you know, either would be a really cool birthday, i think. >> ezekiel was scheduled to arrive on january 3rd but became the first baby born in that kaiser permanente system here in thy area a.m. his proud parents are virtually newlyweds themselves, married less than a year. >> i feel great. >> we're just very excited. >> he is a little blessing. >> reporter: the new parents are eager to show off their baby and gracious enough to talk to us just 12 hours after he was gone. they say they're grateful his delivery was complication-free and is surprised by the boundless love and fierce protectiveness they already feel for this new life. >> just watching him sleep, too. something about the baby sleeping. just looks so peaceful. i cannot believe we

much. so far, about 113 of an inch . numbers are in the upper 40s and low 50s. it's cloudy. here is what is going to happen. we get evening rain through tonight , i should say. cloudy after about 8:00. a break on tuesday which is critically important because we need time to drain and drive . we get really bad flooding if we don't get a break. we do get a break tomorrow. we had one on sunday. sunday was gorgeous. another storm has our way. heavy rain and wind coming in on wednesday. it will stay wet on thursday. that is too watcwhathappens rning. ak of rain 6:30 in the morning and

think , it's raining. then a break. but do not be lulled into a false sense of security. by 3:00 in the afternoon, there's more rain on the way. here's the big times. wednesday afternoon through wednesday evening, early hours of thursday, winds up to 50 miles per hour on the shoreline. rainfall amounts, the future cast rainfall amounts for the storm over the weekend were way off by a factor of 50%. we got twice as much rain as the models for forecasting. this gives you a bright idea. just take away this. it's going to rain a lot. precise amounts, the closer we get, the better i do we will have. flood watch already posted tuesday night through thursday. look at the wind gust along the shoreline. 50 miles per hour. strongly and when this comes through . you will see wednesday afternoon. 50 mile an hour gusts. upper 30s and 40s will cause some damage. it will

ease up by the time we get to thursday morning. we got a lot to do with. we get rain tonight and chances on wednesday and thursday . more coming in on the weekend. that's going to begin to cause some problems because there's not as many breaks if any at all. in the extended forecast , tomorrow using up. wednesday and thursday, first alert days with rain coming down and winds picking up. every day after that, we have a chance of rain especially saturday, sunday, and monday. we will have the latest on this at the news at 5:00 tonight. in the meantime, there's a silver lining behind the clouds. plenty of trouble spots across the bay area. but luckily there are lots of helpers out there. >> if i see someone stuck i'm going to help them out. i dislike helping people out. >> even in the rain . >> even in the rain. it does not matter. even on the clock. i still help them out. >> we need each other. we highlight some of you who went out of your way. many of you

as we look ahead to what brian was talking about, the next big storm system, we want helper we know you are bridge builders in the world and celebrate the fact that you stepped in to help your neighbor. it's a big deal for us here at your community station. first responders had to pull some people from the high waters in danville so that they could make it. they even walked the foley back to the front door to the safety of their homes. there were some scary moments on the freeways, but we know that you helped, as well. on 580 between dublin and castro valley , gina was driving and the heavy downpour on saturday when the dash cam on her tesla recorded a car, look at this, sliding across four lanes of traffic , but missed any oncoming cars and slammed into the side of the road. this is what happened next. >> i knew i wanted to check on whoever it was. i came out of the car and hugged her leg,

it's okay. she is like shaking. >> a 360 all the way. 470. whatever you want to call it. >> and i was behind the wheel. the rear tire got caught in a drainage basin and it looks like it was not going anywhere. angel martinez lived up to his name and arrived to help her. he was driving to work in orlando from modesto. he could have kept going but spotted a need in the community and got out and risked his own life. titus dropped from his trailer to the front of it and within seconds, look at this, he pulled the car back onto the roadway and give somebody else a second chance and a second moment. he said it was the fourth time he's done something like that in a storm. >> saw someone stuck like you know what, i'm going to help them out. i dislike helping people out. >> even in the rain. >> even in the rain. it does not matter. even on the clock , i hope people out. >> god bless you guys, my god. it's new year's. i really did not want today to be like this. >> if this ring gives you the blues, remember there are good
