everybody, for an even stronger storm. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, everybody. i'm reed collin in for sara donchey tonight. a lot of you saw people literally floating down the streets san francisco this weekend. now another more powerful atmospheric river is headed our way. in fact, the national weather service warns this one will be brutal, the potential for widespread flooding, roads washed out, hillsides collapsing and downed trees and power outages. so get ready. tomorrow is the last day to be prepared and people are already scrambling to be ready. in fact, you see this. in castro valley we saw a lot of you loading up on sandbags and in san francisco on the right you can see that. crews had to suction out storm drains. this week most bay area cities are offering sandbags to all of you free of charge. let's go outside, open the windows at night and look out at our bay

area bridged. just remember pavement is slick. if it's not raining at the moment, it has been off and on all day. the rains mixed with the oils on the ro dangerous out there. >> recipe for accidents, just add water. we'll get more, too. tonight we're pretty much done. this stuff has begun to clear out. we get a break in the south bay, peninsula, north bay, pretty much done, picked up not too much, but we'll pick up plenty by wednesday and thursday. so for tonight the showers will end, dry break tuesday, but the headline tonight is this. heavy rain and wind is moving back into the bay area beginning early wednesday morning. it's going to last through the day wednesday. it's going to dump heavy rain, as much as 8 to 10 inches of rain in the mountains at the higher elevations and the wind gusts even on the coastal plains could be up to 50 miles an hour. so we got of and we also have heavy surf

coming in and astronomical king tides and that's all happening midweek. so it's a bad combo and this does stir up a lot of not very pleasant memories from the not distant past which you're going to talk about. >> yes, we are. thank you, brian. one meteorologist at the national weather service warns you wednesday's storm could rival that atmospheric river that hit san jose hard back in 2017. somebody's house there, somebody needing to be rescued, in fact, coyote creek flooding caused $100 million in damage and forced 14,000 people to have to evacuate. tonight a large swath of the santa cruz mountains is under a flood advisory. santa cruz county just gave us this map showing the areas under both flood advisories and warnings. so the county warns if you live in low lying areas, you should be prepared. have that go bag. be ready to evacuate. our devin fehely went to paradise park area that's under a flood warning at this moment to show you how homeowners are trying

to defend their properties. >> reporter: the san lorenzo river is swollen, muddy and churning but still a beast in retreat, a shadow of the floodwaters that swept through the paradise park community. >> by the time we were ready to go, about an hour later we had water up to the front of our home. >> reporter: the river spilled its banks saturday sending a torrent of muddy water through kirk strangeland's garage into the street. we found him cleaning up. he says the dwnevehe insidehouse, a small victory. >> it's cold, wet, dirty, depressing work, but in our case at least it is a first world problem. >> reporter: others were not quite so lucky. >> once it breaches it fills up the garages first. >> reporter: homeowner melissa allred said the floodwaters toppled shelves and of work tables of the garage of her parents' home and rushed into the lowest levels of her own. >> our tables, our workshops,

saturday's storm brought historic rain to san francisco and turned streets into rushing rivers. on monday sewer operations crews went to the hard hit mission district to identify and vacuum clocked catch basins and storm clogged catch basins and storm drains. more strike teams with specialized equipment has been added ahead of wednesday's monstrous storm. the city says its sewer system was not designed to handle the intensity of the 100 year storm on new year's eve. the puc is working with sf fire, public works and the department of emergency management to address 311 calls. it advises residents and businesses to call 311 if they need city prioritizes trouble spots. you can sign upt code to 888777 for realtime emergency texts. the puc said

get an update from the buffalo bills a moment ago. safety damar hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during the game. his heartbeat was restored on the field and he's currently sedated in a cincinnati hospital. here's the play before he went down. hamlin took inthe ground and after getting up he collapses. cpr was administered to hamlin and he was taken to a cincinnati hospital. the game was delayed for over an hour before the league finally made the decision not to resume play. late tonight the bills players flew back to buffalo. hamlin, though, isn't alone. his mom was at the game and the ambulance waited for her to come down to the field before taking them to the hospital. so it's good to hear that his heartbeat was restored. he's got a little ways to go, but we are all sending prayers his way. >> i thought of his family, too, in that very moment. he's so young and these families celebrate these wins right along with their child who gets drafted and gets in the nfl,

you got to see this video. a family of four is lucky to be a live tonight and that's an understatement. they survived a crash 300 feet down a cliffside at devil's slide. that's the infamous stretch of on the san mateo county coast. two adults, two children, a 4-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, were in this white tesla. look down at the bottom of that cliff. when it went over. we just learned tonight the children were not harmed. the adults only had moderate injuries, but this video here, it's amazing. this is the chp showing their rescue. that's rescue team one risking their own lives to bring these victims to safety clear down there at the bottom. in fact, a cal fire official says they didn't wait for helicopters to save the children. dozens of rescuers just stepped forward, put their own lives on the line to get the job done. >> we come out here unfortunately all too often for

things like this and this was nothing short of a miracle that they survived. >> absolute miracle. tonight we still don't know the cause of the crash. we'll just rest easy knowing they're okay. a humboldt county community recovering from a damaging quake just got jolted again the second time in two weeks. we're talking about a 5.4 quake that shook rio dell yesterday morning. you hear it. you see it there. this video showing the moment it hit. the shaking, you can see the furniture shaking, people quickly running for shelter. they didn't jump under that table. dozens of homeowners are still fixing the damage from this last big quake 6.4 that struck december 20th. that quake killed two people and injured 17 others. meanwhile sheriff's deputies are still investigating a snowplow accident that left actor jeremy re crit injurhe's intee care at moment after suffering what is described by police as blunt chest trauma and orthopedic

injuries. this accident happened near mount rose highway in reno sunday morning. renner was airlifted to a local hospital and today he had a second surgery. now he's in stable condition. so that's good news. he was in critical condition. you might remember renner stars in the paramount plus series "mayor of kingstown." this is a look at icy conditions near the area where renner got hurt at the base of mount rose highway in reno. that storm brought more than eight feet snowto the sierra and is coming in the next few days. there's a lot more. in fact, tomorrow the state will conduct itfirst snow survey of the season. speaking of snow, brian, check this out. we have new video of snow showers in napa county tonight. >> i was suspicious about this. >> you kind of saw this coming, right? video taken about 8 p.m. >> let me stop you there. i did not see this coming. >> no. >> this is a bit of a surprise that we had this little cold core move over mount helena. >> here it comes now, highway

rain and then some more rain and then some more rain. so the fact is the computer is stuck and why tonight of all nights, i don't know. here we go on the futurecast, let's have a look now. monday night tonight, 7:30 tomorrow morning cloud over much of northern california and then tuesday afternoon, tomorrow, widespread clouds, not a big deal. then we might get a peek or two of the sun, but wednesday 6:30 a.m. the le powerful cold front begins to move into the bay area. you might think this isn't that bad wednesday morning, but the brunt of it is still well offshore. watch what happens by midafternoon wednesday. this is the major part of the system that will ramp up the winds, draw up the rain as much as perhaps 8 inches of rain by the time all is said and done by thursday evening in the santa cruz mountains. moves through fairly quickly. that part of it is we got friday

chra as s e de forecd. so we'll get a good deal of wind. the wind forecast is for up to 50 miles an hour along the coastal plain as you can see in the time lapse. wednesday morning winds along the coast will be in the 30-mile an hour range, not bad, but wednesday afternoon they're up in the 50-mile an hour range and higher at the upper elevations. they are forecasting the possibility of 70-mile an hour winds in the santa cruz mountains and in mount diablo. by midweek get a break, then more chances of rain coming in toward the weekend. at least it's not continuous unending rain. we get a bit of a chance to drain and dry. to sum it up, showers end tonight, get a break tuesday and then we get hit on wednesday beginning wednesday morning lasting through most of the day and evening. winds will pick up.
