the cincinnati bengals was called off after damar hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and had his heartbeat restored right there on the field. gerald hill has more, and we want to warn you, some of you may find the video here disturbing. >> reporter: in a video that is difficult to watch, buffalo bills defender damar hamlin collided with a cincinnati bengals player during "monday night football." he got up but then collapsed just moments later. the 24-year-old safety was given cpr, then taken away in an ambulance to a local hospital. players on both teams huddled up to pray, many looking upset, shaken, concerned for the teammate and friend. the hit happened in the first quarter, and the game was stopped. the bills and bengals walked back to their locker rooms. more than an hour after the hit, the nfl suspended the game for the night. fans leaving cincinnati stadium were stunned at what happened. >> everything got dead silent.

even the bengals fans, you know, you don't want to see anything like that. certainly praying for hamlin's family. >> reporter: this is hamlin's second year in the league. he was drafted by the bills after a successful career at the university of pittsburgh. now, amid the tragedy, obviously what's happening here, how about this for some hope and generosity. hamlin hosted a toy drive on gofundme. at last check it has raised over $3.1 million, and a lot of those, i have been looking, small dollar donation, 5, 10, 15 bucks from fans across the world. >> yeah, i mean, that is good news, but we are praying he gets out of the hospital and he makes a full recovery. jarred hill, happy new year, by the way, and good to see you. >> thank you. be sure to stay with "cbs mornings." we're going to be joined by james brown for more on last night's merge and the game.

and now to politics. republicans take control of the house today, but the question is who will be speaker? that's still up in the air. representative kevin mccarthy faces opposition from a small group of hard-lined conservatives. h's been making concessions to get the job, but that might not be enough. skyler henry is in washington. skyler, good morning. >> hey, anne-marie, good morning to you and a happy new year. it's a challenge leader mccarthy knew he would be facing for weeks now given the few conservative detractors and that slim majority. meanwhile this new congress also ushers in a new generation of leadership for house democrats looking to carry at least some momentum from the previous congress forward. >> i hope you all have a very nice new year's. >> reporter: republican leader kevin mccarthy ice battle to become the next speaker of the house intensified overnight. >> we don't know how this speaker vote is going to turn out. there is genuine uncertainty. >> reporter: in a tweet, andrew biggs claimed mccarthy is short

of the required 218 votes needed to secure the gavel and added he will continue to oppose mccarthy for house speaker. virginia congressman bob good foisted a similar sentiment on fox news on monday. >> it's worth it to get the best possible speaker instead of surrendering to the status quo. >> reporter: mccarthy met with members of his caucus again last night to try to shore up support after making house rule changes. the changes include the ability of any five members of a majority party to initiate a vote to remove the speaker. he also promised to establish select committees to investigate president biden's covid and border policies and to reviews of the fbi and doj's investigations into formatter president trump and the january 6th riots. >> he's given them everything they're asking for, and our friends in the freedom caucus need to take the win because it's good for the country. >> reporter: incoming house democratic leader hakim jeffries

who described the conditions in the house as chaos when asked by cbs news would not commit to working with centrist republicans to give mccarthy the extra votes he may need. and so later today we'll see members cast their votes out loud in the house chamber for speaker. we should point out that previously president biden and former president trump received what's referred to as protest votes previously, so that's something to look out for as well. meanwhile we should also point out that a new senate begins today as well. democrats, of course, retaining their control of that chamber. anne-marie? >> it should be an interesting day on the hill. skyler henry in washington. skyler, thank you. so the man accused of murdering four university of idaho students is due in court today. as police now say forensics and dna were used to catch him. danya bacchus has more. >> reporter: bryan kohberger could be in an idaho courtroom within 72 hours after his appearance in pennsylvania.

he's facing first-degree murder charges for the november 13th murderer stabbing deaths of four idaho university students. law enforcement sources say forensic analysis allegedly linked him to the murders. cc moore is an expert on dna testing. >> in a very personal intimatee it's virtually impossible not to leave your dna behind. we have such sensitive equipment now. you could leave behind touch dna and that could be enough to perform this type of analysis. >> reporter: the 28-year-old was arrested friday at his parents' home in eastern pennsylvania. kohberger's attorney told cbs news that his client's father flew west about a month after the murders for a preplanned cross-country road trip. the pair then drove in a white hyundai elantra, the same model spotted near the crime een. >> this is the first bit of joy

we've had in the last seven weeks. we hope they picked the right guy. that gives us hope. we haven't had hope in a long time. >> reporter: kohberger's family released a statement saying they pray each day for the families of the victims and they will continue to let the legal process unfold. >> that was danya bacchus reporting. police now say the man accused of attacking nypd officers with a machete was known to law enforcement and was on a terror watch list. nancy chen has the latest on that. >> reporter: authorities continue to investigate how a man wielding a machete managed to mount a chaotic new year's eve attack just blocks from rev let leers in times square. >> it was nuts for about a good hour. >> reporter: police says 19-year-old trevor bickford

slashed two officers in the head just outside a security checkpoint and attempted to injure a third before one of them shot him in the shoulder. >> there is no ongoing threat. we believe this was a sole individual at this time. there's nothing to indicate otherwise. >> reporter: sources say bickford had already been placed an fbi terror watch list after self-radicalizing online. and in a notebook found after the attack, bickford wanted to join islamic extremists fighting overseas. he traveled to the city by train from his home late last week, spending the night before the attack at a homeless shelter. sources also say the bomb squad bed roll in a wooded area in nearby queens believed to belong to bickford. >> this could have been so much worse. >> without a doubt. if he would have gotten his hands on firearms, it would have been a whole different equation both in terms of loss of life but also in the fear that was spread when an incident like this happens. >> that was nancy chen reporting. actor jeremy renner remains in critical but stable condition following a snow plow accident. a representative for the 51-year-old says that he underwent surgery after suffering blunt chest trauma and

orthopedic injuries in sunday's accident in reno, nevada. renner owns a home in that area. video from tmz shows him being airlifted to the hospital. and now to the war in ukraine. ukrainian forces have mounted a major attack against russian forces, hitting a russian base in the country's east. ian lee has that story. >> reporter: these smouldering ruins are all that's left of a russian based used to store and house weapons.inn's rockets lik seen here landed shortly after midnight on sunday. russia claims at least 63 soldiers died while ukraine says as many as 400 were killed. it capped off a deadly new year's weekend. russia launched dozens of drones and missiles at ukraine's city and infrastructure, plunging much of the country into darkness yet again. one killed a woman in kyiv. her father-in-law picked through what remains of her house.

looted and then smuggled to the u.s. where it was on display at a houston museum. it was recovered after american authorities determined that it was smuggled through germany into the u.s. in 2008. there was a deadly scaffolding accident collapse in charlotte, and a cryptocurrency fraud suspect heads to court today. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. cbsnews.com reports the founder of the failed cryptocurrency platform ftx is said to plead not guilty of fraud charges today. sam bankman-fried will appear in federal court in fork to face charges of defrauding investors and consumers out of billions of dollars. he posted a $250 million bond last month after being extradited from the bahamas. he's been under house arrest at his parents' home in california. two top associates are cooperating and have pleaded guilty in the case.

three construction workers were killed after a scaffolding collapse at a construction site in charlotte, north carolina, yesterday. two others were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. all work at the site has been suspended, and officials from occupational safety and health administration are taking part in this investigation. and cbs pittsburgh says a pennsylvania police chief was killed and another officer injured in a shoot-out with a suspect. police chief justin mcintyre was killed yesterday during a foot th other officer was shot in the leg. police say the suspect, 28-year-old eric lamont swan car jacked a vehicle and fled after he was wounded in the shoot-out. he was shot and killed by police yesterday in a nearby neighborhood. still to come, flyer frustration. why hundreds of flights in florida were delayed on one of the busiest travel days of the year. e busiest travel days of t year.

baseball's oldest stadium played host to this year's nhl winter classic. the boston bruins and pittsburgh penguins faced off outdoors at fenway park in boston, and it was a dramatic one. jake debrusk scored with just two minutes left to give boston a 2-1 win. and a big headache for florida travelers on one of the busiest travel days of the year, and tesla falls short of its financial goal, that is, despite record sales. courtney kealy has today's "moneywatch" report. >> reporter: wall street is back open today after it was closed yesterday for the new year's holiday. the faa says an air traffic control glitch has been fixed after hundreds of flights were delayed at airports in florida yesterday on one of the busiest travel days of the year. the problem at an air traffic control center in miami caused the faa to issue a so-called ground stop, delaying flights
