this is cbs news bay area. wednesday is another first alert weather day in the latest of the atmosphere quivers wilson heavy rain and gusty winds into the bay area.

a scary scene on the football field. everyone sending up their support for a buffalo bills player in critical condition. on capitol hill, deadlock on co. e fifor ear ofthe house good afternoon. let's start with one the storm down, another powerful run right on its heels. it is putting all of the bay area on notice. we are getting ready for more first alert weather days. >> this storm is not going to be identical to what we had a few days ago on saturday but it is going to be a system that brings the threats of heavy rain and the potential for localized flooding and wind damage to the bay area. the rain chances will come at us in a couple of different waves. the first rolls in in time for the morning commute. plan on extra time for that. little lull in the action mid-day with scattered showers and in the heaviest rain will be moving in by late afternoon into the evening. both ends of the wednesday commute are going to be messy across the bay area. this is associated with an ar

three on the atmosphere quivers scale which is a moderate strength but it brings a balance of beneficial rain . we do need the rain as the large scale drought perspective but on the heels of the heavier rain we saw on saturday and a co itionsh localized flooding as the rain falls onto already saturated soils. flood watch in effect for the entire bay area through the day on thursday and wind damage because a lot of trees are going to come down because they are rooted in that soft soil that has been saturated by the previous rain events. we are talking about 30 miles per hour sustained winds from the south. some of the mountains getting 70 miles per hour gusts. strongest winds likely to be late tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours. take a look at the rain on the wind hour by hour coming up in a few minutes. our anne makovec joins us now from the newsroom. a lot of people trying to figure out how to prepare for this next wave while they are in the midst of

cleaning up from the next one. >> saturday was the second wettest day in the san francisco history dating back to 170 years. we could see the same sort of trouble again tomorrow. take a look at some of this damage . sissan mewere flooded and a ht caoff g expecting a lighter storm than we had. clogged storm drains around the city made matters worse , causing rain water to back up onto streets and buildings. this time around, the public utilities commission will be putting out more storm barriers, specifically around 17th and folsom in the mission which saw a lot of flooding this weekend. the city wants to make sure that everyone is prepared for possible power outages and trees down . they want people to avoid any unnecessary travel all day long. they are giving out sandbags but asking people not to take them if they don't absolutely need them. call 311 for any property or utility problems leaving 911 dispatchers open for extreme emergencies. >> please use 911 wisely . we

have a lot of emergencies that we will need to respond to. we want to make sure that 911 is used as a life or death tool only. >> people have been trying to prepare themselves for the worst. hardware stores around the city running out of supplies like rain boots, tarps and water pumps. another thing in short supply, sandbags, even the sand to fill them. as for the unhoused around the city, 200 canter bedsand ch ams are street you got to get a look at this. this is a sinkhole that opened up in daly city following the latest storm. a parked car fell right through it. that sinkhole may have been caused by some sort of water main break underneath . crews blocked off the intersection at abbott avenue and castle street this morning to pull it out and clean it up. also, crews are cleaning up this street after flooding. the road is closed as several excavators work to

clear the muddy debris there. the city is located along a hillside in the mountain area. let's jump the map to the east bay. this danville resident spend his money shoveling out the mud and the debris on the inside of it right out of his driveway. a huge mess there. he says he is ready for the next round of rain. >> i got extra sandbags just in case. we are about 1 inch from getting into our garage . we loaded up on sandbags, got shovels, got rain boots. that is all we can do. >> the wet is here but up in the sierra, plenty of wet snow. there is an upside to all of this. the department of water ow rveyoftht ucted its t inside the snowpack. get this, it is at 174% of average for the state statewide as we know that we are in a drought . good news, right? the snow survey gives scientists key information on our water supply.

nators ele . misitchah ren nt , mc connrrell becarimeis so longest-serving party reader in the senate history. let's go to a developing story out of cincinnati. a lot of your logging on for updates by the hour. we can tell you that this hour, buffalo bills player damar hamlin is still in critical condition , still in a coma after that scary scene in the game against the bengals last night. he suffered cardiac arrest while out on the field. lieberman has the story that has been an outpouring of support and well wishes for his recovery. hainis thinking first fety ma responders, medical personnel and well-wishers for their support e 24-year-old remains in critical condition at the university of cincinnati medical center after suffering a cardiac arrest during monday night 's game against the bengals. hamlin suddenly collapsed after making a tackle. >> the opponents helmet was in his chest. we have blunt force trauma to the chest in the exact right spot at the exact

at what is happening right now. there are a few showers hitting the ground north of the golden gate. this is not the main event. you are not going to last all evening. let's track over to futurecast. it will be drying out as we get past sunset. we should be seeing dry conditions across the bay area. the first wave of rain will be moving comes up on wed we will see light showers initially several hours before the sun comes up with heavy rain willbe sloppy mog commute afternoon evening commute. a little break in the action. hopefully that allows the morning rain to soak in because heavier rain and stronger winds will sweep in by late afternoon and early evening. there will be a period where we pick up close to an inch of rain per hour . that is heavy rain falling on saturated soils.

that rain will not last as long as what we saw on saturday. that is the one thing working for us. more follow-up showers are likely wednesday into thursday. three gradually do dry out as we head through thursday afternoon and then we wait for the next round of rain that will be heading our way over the weekend. how much are we talking about? we are talking about anywhere from a little over 1 inch in some of the rain showered areas to 4 inches in some of the higher elevations. in general, up to 3 inches of rain but again, that is on top of already saturated soils and a lot of standing water left over from saturday's rain. it will not take long for the flooding issues to reemerge. gusty winds to begin the day on wednesday but the strongest winds will be more noticeable as we head toward midday. wind gusts in the 40 miles per hourg the cot. those will gradually calm down through tomorrnigh there is more rain on the way . a

good chance of rain will be moving into saturday, continuing into sunday and more rain in the forecast next week. just a very wet , unsettled pattern that will continue through the middle of the month. right now, a lot of clouds. temperature is a mix of upper 40s to low 50s for most of us. 58 in san jose. tonight, as the rain moves in, temperatures will be dropping down mostly in the low to mid 40s. tomorrow, because the southerly winds bring in warmer air along with the rain, temperatures will reach up into the mid to upper 50s and even low 60s but again, the brief break in the action we get around midday will not last very long at all. tomorrow and thursday are both alert days. we might have to go into alert mode once again into the weekend. saturday and sunday are looking wet as well with more showers in the forecast monday and tuesday of next week. it looks like the rain is also associated with an atmospheric river but it will be lower on the scale as
