>> good evening, everybody. i am rick allen. >> and i am sarah cook. we have you covered on the minute by minute developments on the atmospheric river walloping the bay area. >> so wins. you are feeling them. there are so many downed o rstr ees juinst n to get one for town. >> and in the south city, wins were so strong that this gas plastic toy. >> also flooding concerns in the east bay. this driver decided to forge his car through a flooded street. this is in martinez. san francisco crews are scrambling to clear storm drains to prevent catastrophic flooding. first, let's go to paul heggen. >> we will start with flood warnings and affect across pretty much the entire bay area. the exception is solano

county because you get from a different national weather service office. but everybody else , warnings continuing until at least 12: 45. could be expanded even beyond that. zooming in on first alert doppler, still heavy rain falling across much of the north bay, extending over into solano county, while parts of sonoma and marin counties are getting a chance to dry out a little while. there poars ck he francisco and the peninsula, same thing across the bay and another gap in the in. it is not as widespread as it was around 4: 30, 5:00 this evening. the gap continuing in ngmoose but there is more rain at vi uperwill makeitais n way getting a litt from the parent storm system, so we will get a break for much of the overnight hours from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. the flood watch continues until tuesday, because we are going

to get more bands of rain on top of what we already picked up. the strongest winds we are experiencing are basically happening right now. 36-mile-per-hour sustained winds, gusting to 53 miles per hour. the strongest winds are likely in the rearview mirror. we have had numerous wind gusts approaching 60 miles per hour. the high wind watch continues until thursday. wins could be a figure until thursday. we will track those on futurecast in just a few minutes. heartbreaking news tonight. the storm has turned deadly in sonoma county after a redwood tree fell into a home, killing an infant inside. authorities say that this happened on joy road around 5: 30 this evening. the fire chief who was one of the first people on the scene said that it hit close to home for a lot of first responders. >> anytime you have a situation like this, especially with a child, the emotions run a lot higher. a lot of people in our fire department have kids that age. >> this is probably up there with some of the storms 20, 30

years ago. >> say the parents inside the did not suffer any injuries themselves. the wind has been knocking out the power across the bay area this evening. here is anne makovec. >> more than 99,000 homes and businesses are without power in the bay area. the hardest-hit areas around the peninsula with more than 41,000 homes out of power. that is followed by the north bay. you can type in any address on the pg&e website to find the current status. most of this cause by fallen power lines or trees that have fallen into lines. some of the outages in the north bay caused by this. sparking power lines. it looks like some transformers blue. this was in san rafael. live voltage wires that came down on canal street. at one point the city issued a shelter in place order while they worked clear the road. power expected to come on tomorrow.

as for the rest of the outages, pg&e says that their next comprehensive update will be at 4: 45 tomorrow morning. >> all right, and back of it, thank you so much. a man has slipped and fallen into a creek in san jose. officials are warning people, especially the unhoused who live nearby, to stay away due to the high floodwaters. >> we have more on the dramatic rescue. people put their own lives on the line. >> reporter: that's exactly right. throughout the day, police patrolled the waterways with loudspeakers telling people not to camp along the creeks because of the rising water. one man found out just how dangerous these floodwaters can be when he went to retrieve some property. he was apparently staying at another place but went back, and that is when he fell into the water.

rescuers search for the man who had fallen into los gatos creek with flashlights. when they spotted him, they threw him a lifeline and pulled him to safety. it happened just below the bass come street bridge where the banks of the creek are steep and dangerous. the man was apparently exhausted from his time in the frigid water, and was helped to his feet by a san jose firefighter. the man 's girlfriend said that he was trying to retrieve some belongings from their camp near the river bank when he slipped and fell in. first responders took only a few minutes to bring him to safety. >> how you doing, sir? >> i had a bad night! >> what happened? what

happened? >> i slipped and fell. >> reporter: that man very le luresponrs were able to get out there so quickly and find him, because it was p■itch dark below he bridge where that happened. it happened basically at bascom avenue work crosses over los gatos creek. fortunately for that man it worked out okay. fortunately , san jose police will resume their patrols to warn people to get to safety. there are free bus rides being offered by vta to get people to warming centers that have been set up at community centers in san jose, including the roosevelt community center in downtown and the seven trees community center in coyote

creek. that's it from san jose. back to you. >> thank you, lynn, for bringing us that story. meanwhile, pouring rain and gusting winds have been pounding half moon bay and the san mateo county coastal area. our reporter has been monitoring that area all day long, and he is live in el granada with the damage to that area. >> reporter: yeah, liz, absolutely right. double whammy with the strong winds jik and rain. these are two communities located between half moon bay and pacifica, and this is an example of what we are seeing this evening. a large downed tree coming right down on alameda. you can see that it actually took down some power lines at the end of this. firefighters and pg&e workers have deactivated this line. they feel that it is safe now, or at least safe for the time being, so they are responding to other major incidents.

unfortunately it will take them some time before other workers will come back and work on this downed tree, but we are seeing downed trees all over this community. from small trees to large trees, gusting winds pushing over one after the other. so many trees that they are using bulldozers to move them out of the roadways if no powerlines are involved. in el granada, with many downed trees on portola. some blocks look like this, just covered in tree limbs and debris. those downed trees caused small fires after they landed on powerlines. many streets in el granada are also without power. residents in the area say they are staying home.

>> they are very intense. the rain is very intense. we just have to be careful and vigilant and make sure that we are taking precautions to stay safe. >> we also saw a lot of tree limbs breaking off and landing on powerlines, like this one on california avenue and moss beach around 3:00 in the afternoon. this one is at suzanne court in half moon bay. this large cypress tree toppled over around 2:00 this afternoon. the base is about 1 feet to 1 tallfe. this tree is surrounded by apartments and townhomes. luckily it landed in the courtyard and no one was hurt. >> i was up in the mountains for two days stuck in the snow. i just got back last night. >> and now you got a tree in the backyard! >> yeah, i'm kind of dealing with the storm as it comes! >> reporter: not far away on dolores avenue, a small tree uprooted and landed on powerlines. that happened at about 4:00. >> with the winds we are seeing now, it doesn't take much to topple the streets over.

>> reporter: yeah. firefighters are saying that if you don't have to leave the house, stay home, stay warm, stay dry and stay safe. i'm going to come back as we look at the life situation out here. again, that is the alameda. you have that large tree across the street. we have flooding right here at the corner of valencia avenue and the alameda. here is the situation. on the side of alameda avenue, just down the street, you see in that block, there is another downed tree. so the situation in el granada just a lot of downed trees and power lines throughout this community. officials asking for patients , because it will take them time to remove all these downed trees. for now, life here in el granada, i will send it right back to you. >> yeah. that morning is going to be rough tomorrow. bjorkstrand cleanup and figure out what to do next as far as getting out of their homes and trying to clean up. >> masterful storytelling. please be safe going home to your family tonight.

that was the reaction in santa cruz county when a transformer exploded after a tree fell right on top of it tonight. this happened in felton. just one of the countless power outages caused by the storm. >> not far away, and boulder creek, 200 kids from the bay area had to be evacuated from their science camp and then bust home. the fear was that the only access to their camp was the small bridge over the san lorenzo river that could collapse. >> let's jump over to the east bay now i look at this. the aptly named neptune avenue in san leandro is flooded. the wate

people along the russian river have been advised to be ready for evacuation orders. the water is expected to rise above flood stage early friday morning, and then again on sunday night. tonight, the river's water level stands at 12 feet. our wilson walker is there for us tonight. >> reporter: so right now there is lots of trees down . we are all pretty chill. we are used to this, but this is a little

extra heavy. >> reporter: this is going to sound familiar to a lot of you across our region. the town has been plunged into darkness with the exception of a few businesses that are running on generator power. no word on when the power will come back on. the real focus here is obviously the river and what might be coming in the days ahead. >> getting it out of the way, it is just like a motorcycle. if you like it, get it saved. >> reporter: all along the russian river, this was a day to get ready and hold the hands of others. >> all right. it's all good, especially if they are your neighbors. >> reporter: jerry knighton knows what a flood can do here. >> we have had the water up to your knees here before. >> reporter: so what does he think will happen in the coming days? >> we have got bubbles up on the pool table. that elephant

used to belong to mick jagger. he had two of them made. >> reporter: what he is saying is that he is not taking chances, and he is not alone. >> this morning we got out here and lifted the trailer up a good 18 inches to where it supposedly should be, over where the rain should stop. hopefully. >> reporter: he says hopefully, because exactly where the river will crest is something that not everyone is taking for granted. this is what the last big flood look like in 2019 when it hit 45 feet, causing widespread damage along the river. friday it is expected to hit 33 feet, just one foot above flood stage. then 39 feet on sunday. >> 40 is usually when i wrote, across the street. 35 is what they were saying earlier, and that just means basically like the beaches and over on neely road and stuff like that. a lot of those folks are leaving now. >> reporter: so river communities will be waiting and watching for days. fingers

crossed. >> we got cross hatches on top of all the plastic on our stuff there, too. >> so wilson mentioned to jake different crests. that first crest is going to be thursday evening at 33 feet, just one foot above flood level. the next crest is going to occur because the river isn't going to drop very much. barely below flood stage before the next round of rain moves in, pushing it back up to major flood stage at 40 feet. not quite where was in 2019, but still significant cause for concern, especially with more rain in the forecast next week. of course we still have plenty of rain out there this evening. we have been tracking that, zooming in for a better look. i want to give you the widescale perspective. pockets of rain moving across the bay area. 580 westbound in oakland has water in all lanes

of traffic. california 24 eastbound completely blocked by an accident. numerous problems even with reduced traffic on the roads. this heaviest rain is going to give a bit of a push to the east by the parent storm system. it is still going to be hanging out for inland parts of the east bay and the santa clara valley by 1:00 a.m. we get a little dry break maybe for the last three, four, five hours before he moves in for the morning commute on thursday. that is going to continue in waves as we get into early afternoon. then things start to wind down. this particular storm system still has the possibility of lingering showers all the way into thursday afternoon and evening. let's out of the rain that is going to fall on top of what we have already received. mary lee is going to add up how much those totals have been so far. but on top of that, anywhere from a 10th of an inch to a half-inch of additional rainfall. the problem is there is more on the way. wind gusts, while they are strong right now, they are still going to be problematic as we get into tomorrow morning. just not quite as strong. 15 to 25 mile per hour gusts, maybe up to 30 to start the day. that is our high wind warning that expires

at 10:00 a.m. the issue is that after eddie showered day but more activity on friday, more rain heads our way from saturday into sunday night. even more rain from monday and tuesday next week. this is a stuck weather pattern that will continue to send additional waves of rain tortoise. the seven-day outlook from the weather protection center shows the possibility of at least three inches of rain on the low-end. most of the bay area anticipating four to seven inches of additional rain on top of what we already picked up, with the possibility of 10 additional inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains and the northern mountains over the next several days. so we have highlighted a number of days as first alert weather days in the forecast. tomorrow, because of the addition of flooding, and maybe even some power outages with gusty winds in the morning. late saturday night, the next wave of rain moves in, lingering into early sunday morning. the rain next week could be even heavier on monday and tuesday, associated with yet another atmospheric river. of course one of those right now is not done dumping rain on us at the moment. mary lee has been here all evening helping me keep track of the system and some of the amounts that we

have picked up on top of that we got last weekend and blessed week! >> yeah, this powerful atmospheric river, paul. looking at these rainfall amounts that continue to rise. we have watched it all afternoon, evening and into tonight. so the 24 hour rainfall amount, check it out. like sonoma, more than four inches of rain. park in the north bay, almost three inches. oakland looking at more than an inch and a half in san mateo as well as for san francisco at the embarcadero. san jose looking at 84 hundredths of saratoga at e and a quarter. los gaes anquter.los s pacifica ong coas about 6/10 and an inch and a half in concord and fremont looking at an inch and a quarter. more rain to come. also, strong winds. winds gusting at 84 miles per hour in the marin peninsula. los gatos, 77

saw a big scene here as we look at the storm damage today out of south san francisco. >> yeah, the winds tossed this gas station and caused the roof to topple over. kenny choi was there tonight. kenny, have crews showed up at all, any kind of responding crews? >> reporter: we are here on king drive west of south san francisco. the downpour has been heavy throughout the day and the winds have been extremely strong. take a look behind me. see what happened at this valero gas station. the

winds completely knocking down this canopy and this awning. you can see the two beams folded right on top of the fueling station. we spoke to several witnesses in the area who heard that loud sound, and they say that they were scared! luckily, this area had been taped off, the gas station had been closed for most of the day . some people in the area saying that the electricity had gone out, and they really haven't seen many people pumping gas here at the station. so a fortunate situation in that sense, but no one was in the area when this thing came crashing down. but you can see that there is going to be a long cleanup process here in this area. you can understand and see the impact of these heavy downpours and these extremely strong winds in this storm. and the storm continues to bring pockets of heavy rainfall across the bay area. the back edge of this will make its way further east

rain continues to fall across much of the bay area on this first alert weather day, with another first alert weather day tomorrow. flooding problems are going to be exacerbated by any additional rain we get tomorrow morning through tomorrow afternoon. the rain continues to fall across much of the north bay right now. much of the rain is in
