is a mess out there to be cleaned up. the talk of the town. a gas station awning comes crashing down in the storm. we will had to the scene for an update. we hope you weather the storm okay. we hope you're okay. i'm reed cowan . we know it is another first alert weather day. not hard to see why . parts of the bay getting rain. others dealing with messes from flooding and powerful winds. let's take you live outside. gloomy skies, rain in some spots. we understand the storm is not done yet. >> not done with us quite yet. we have some flood warnings and flood advisories that continue. the flood warnings continue until 4:45. that is for parts of the north bay and in the and parts of the east bay. a flood advisory in the solano county

goes until 10:00 p.m. let's take a look at first alert doppler . it is not as widespread, not as heavy as we had this morning but there are more showers making their way into the northbay. some pockets of heavier rain between santa rosa and rohnert park . a few pockets of slightly heavier rain for far western portions of contra costa county right over richmond. this activity is sliding toward the east. some showers in the diablo range in the santa cruz mountains just adding more moisture to soil that is already saturated. you can see this band of rain moving into the northbay. how much have we picked up so far? it is nice to see the sun peeked through. one of the measurement points of the santa cruz mountains picked up more than 6 inches of rain. going to this, we expected on a widespread basis an inch and half to 3 inches of rain and generally that is where things have ended up. a little bit less for san francisco and san jose but well over 1 inch of total rainfall.

we are not done yet. the next system will be heading our way on saturday. there is a slight risk of excessive rainfall which means that the rain, while it will not be as intense as this past system, it will be enough to lead to the threat of localized flooding. i will have more details on that coming up . anne makovec is in the newsroom tracking some damage from the storm. >> this storm made a mess all along the coast in santa cruz county. we are talking about mountains getting all of that water and the warning, don't get too close to those waves. that is some video from the west side of santa cruz. the person who shot the video said the man right there was hit by those waves and is doing okay. santa cruz county sending a reminder to not go anywhere near the water wall areas are under a flood warning. they are telling people living along the coast to evacuate because of scenes like this. the strong waves damaged part of the capital appear. the storm

continues. the chp posting these pictures showing waves just washing out the roads next to the beach. officers were asking people to avoid the coastal areas. this video coming into the newsroom as water nearly reaching this bridge over southern california creek. you can see the waves spilling over the seawall in the homes in the background. a high surf warning is in effect right now through tomorrow morning at 3:00 a.m. >> hopefully everyone stays safe. structure plenty of trouble to report on the streets and on the roads thanks to all the rain and wind. this video behind me is redwood road near castro valley. it is closed until further notice. fallen trees are causing a mess and many other spots. they told us this would happen and it did. this one came crashing down on church street in san francisco. in the city, crews busy cleaning up following trees as well. this was at

slope and 21st this morning. let's go to burlington where a tree fell onto overhead wires near the caltrain station . that has shut down service between the hillsdale and millrace stations. we are told all the wires have been removed and they have been able to make it safe to try to get the tree out there. we will keep you updated on the story. coastal areas are seeing damage from fallen trees and power lines. our shawn chitnis reports from el granada in san mateo county. >> reporter: we spent much of the day looking at the damage in this particular neighborhood where downed trees have closed off streets. this afternoon, you can see that crews are making progress with this particular tree as they were able to cut it up and take pieces off of the road. this particular tree not only knocked down power lines, it hit other trees on the other side of the street and just barely missed a home and a truck that was parked here overnight . other trees in the neighborhood had a similar effect as they just barely missed cars and homes but

created a mess on the road. crews have been doing the work to cut up the trees, get them agthhis part of el anada t arod lido, they may not be energized but in some cases, they could be so you should be keeping your distance. they have put cones out and they want to remind neighbors to stay away while they continue to do their work . that is the situation here in this part of san mateo county. here is what one highway looks like in el granada today. cal fire tweeting video of the debris on the waterfront. let's take a look at the latest power outages across the bay area. more than 66,000 pg&e customers still without power right now . most of them up in the northbay . here is what caused some of the outages. this viewer shared video of a transformer sparking in san raphael in the night. c■an you imagine seeing that? live voltage wires came down on canal street . at one point, if

you got the shelter in place order, that is why they did it. >> imagine driving along and then seeing this in the storm, the awning of a gas station on the peninsula fell over on its n francisco with onn >>ek we have been preparing for this storm. we had been expecting us downed trees and downed power lines but this is something else. this was some significant damage to a gas station. this is a gas station in south san francisco. you can see the canopy tipped over and hit two of the pumping stations here and people have been reacting as they are driving by. this is a busy street . they take out their bones and they start to record. we have seen firefighters here. they were looking at the damage here . we also spoke to the person who provides gas to the station. he was telling us that the owner

here decided to close yesterday. that was another precaution. take a look at some of this. >> i was stunned. canopies tend to stay up. you would think that it would not stand up. the winds yesterday were dramatic. >> we are still experiencing some wind . it is not as strong as it was this morning anis sg hit you out sometime. the roads are slick so be sure to be extra careful. in sonoma county, the storm turnedd inside. it happened yesterday evening . the fire chief says it hit close to home for a lot of first responders. >> anytime you have a situation like this, especially with a child, emotions are a lot higher.

>> this is probably up there with 2019, some of the storms. >> our thoughts are with the family that suffered such a loss, a broken home and broken hearts. authorities say the parents inside did not suffer any physical injuries. a chp officer injured by a fallen tree in san jose. officers responded to a crash on highway 17 near 280 this morning. they were standing on the right shoulder in whinny and rainy conditions when the tree came down. the injured officer rushed to valley medical center but we are told was awake and alert so we send good thoughts to that first responder. we know so many first responders have been out all night long making sure we are all taken care of. this is video from the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab at soda springs. light to moderate snow showers. we are expecting up to a foot of more snow by tonight . we are watching it and we will have a

continues to try to sway gop members for the 218 votes needed. still not happening. pope francis salivated the funeral mass for his predecessor pope benedict in saint peter's square at the vatican . he is the first sitting pope to preside over the funeral of a retired pontiff in church history. benedict died last saturday at the age of 95. buffalo bills safety damar hamlin is on the mend . the team gave us an update we love to hear it. he has shown remarkable prevent over the last 24 hours says the team. player collapsed during the game on monday night. he is still in critical condition doctors are hope will in how the 24-year-old is going and communicating. >> the first question he wrote when he started to awaken was, did we win? we know that he is not only that the lights are on but we know that he is home. >> the answer back in the room to him was you won at the game of life . doctors say more tests will be needed to determine the cause of this cardiac arrest. we wish him well. more first alert weather.

businesses in the northbay know we are bracing for more rain in the coming days. as justin andrews is about to show you, they are relieved that for now, the storm has not hit them worse. >> business owners tell me they dodged a bullet that they are glad they did but they were already prepared with this floodwall and the sandbags we are seeing. this is the owner of ludwig's here in downtown . taking down this wooden floodwall and removing the sandbags he and so many other businesses had that fear of flooding last night. they armed their entrances with these flood walls, bracing for the creek waters to bounce over the banks and flood, something businesses know all too well. he has dealt with two other floods before where 6 feet of water poured into his business, costing him $100,000 each time . i asked him, will his worries return with more rain and more wet weather on the way coming in the next several days? here is what he said.

>> possibly. it is all about how quickly that creek rises, how intense the rain is . i get anxious every time a rain happens because we have gone through two floods. i have been in two floods, 1982 and 2005. when things like this happen, there was a little bit of anxiety. being able to monitor the creek without having to go over there and look at it is great. i'm not as concerned now as i was yesterday. >> reporter: so many businesses here are used to the floodwaters rising from the creek but that certainly does not lessen the blow. back to you. >> thank you. time for look at our forecast with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen . >> we have to get used to flooding over the next several days because we have more rain chance is headed our way including right now. we have pockets of showers for the most part but am locally heavy

downpours embedded within this, making its way to the northbay also, the far western are contra costa county. that is extending to the east toward concord and walnut creek. this rain is dropping slowly to the south. that has a significant impact over the next couple of hours to have a bad effect on the traffic this afternoon and this evening. one system is leaving us . rain chances are going to diminish tonight . off and on showers possible tomorrow but the next storm system is lining up and that will be moving toward us, sending rain back into the bay area. let's take a look at futurecast that shows the showers out there. it is diminishing through the rest of the tonight. it is trying to bring more rain into the pocket of south san jose. off and on showers will be a possibility but they will be more miss than hit for the rest of the day. the rest will be further up the coast to the north but a few showers could sneak into the northbay during the afternoon and evening. it will be looming

off the coast before the sun comes up saturday. once the first wave of rain moves in , it will not be quite as organized as this most recent one but it will bring us off and on showers. some pockets of heavier rain. it does look like a band of heavy rain will move through saturday night into early sunday. how much rain are we talking about on top of what we have received? keep in mind this is one version of one forecast model. it is estimated from a few tenths of an inch of rain to the potential for 2 inches of rain. the higher elevations and ride along the coast in general . a half inch is a likely scenario for this particular system which would be purely beneficial for the bay area. it will put a dent in our drought conditions. the flooding threat is something we will have to monitor and the wind damage potential is something we have to watch as

well as the trees try to keep the grass on the rain saturated soil. the winds pick up during the day tomorrow. they will be much more noticeable on saturday and the strongest gusts will be occurring as the first rain arrives. 40 to 50 miles per hour gusts will be possible once again. a lot of inland spots picking up those 40 miles per hour gusts . another round of rain is on the way by monday into tuesday of next week. that looks like it will be associated with a more organized and even stronger atmospheric river. it will be a borderline atmospheric river overall but you add these rain chances on top of one another and over the next seven days, this is the estimate from the weather protection center. generally 3 to 7 inches of rain. higher amounts further north including the potential for some 10 inch accumulations on your localized basis for the mountains of the northbay and in the santa cruz mountains as well. keep in mind this is all on top of soil that cannot absorb much more moisture. looking outside right now, a few breaks in the cloud cover.

it is raining right now in santa rosa while all of the other communities listed see a break from the shower activity. we will drop down to the 40s pretty much across the board by early friday morning with a break from the widespread shower activity. we get a chance to warm up , some of the puddles can soak in and evaporate. temperatures will warm-up into the upper 50s and low 60s for most of us by friday afternoon. then a stretch of alert days. we will have to monitor the river flooding situation and the even heavier rain will be moving in monday and tuesday of next week followed up by some lingering showers wednesday and thursday. you would hope that maybe that represents the spicket turning off at least temporarily but it looks like yet another system will be heading our way by friday into the following weekend. we have a long way to go before we break out of this weather pattern. >> we will brace ourselves. you might be out in the rain on sunday as the team wraps up the regular season at levi stadium. the niners say rain or shine, they will be ready. >> this is the volkswagen red

coming up, we will take you to santa cruz county for some iconic structures suffered major damage in the storm. while we deal with rain and wind, other parts of the country have heavy snow. a lot of people are out there helping each other, taking it in stride. outside minneapolis, commuters at this on-ramp got out oftheir cars to work together, shoulder to shoulder to shovel the snow themselves. this was caught on a state transportation traffic camera earlier this week. they are hoping for warmer temperatures this weekend but i always say, people good. >> i got out of there
