now at is 1:0 ction on the santa cruz county coastline as another big storm heads our way. from kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> i'm reed cowan in for sara donchey. so tonight, we know many of you are knee deep from the cleanup from the monstrous storm. this is in the santa cruz county coastline area. the city of capitola undersiege from the surge pounding against the build ings. the churning sea was very serious. somebody thocean.t rf lan out there e b

mebune. this what is left behind of the pier. an entire section of it just chomped and gone. near santa cruz, main beach, the fast moving storm surge rushed over the sand bars and really threatened to swamp the buildings. and then, we can tell you an iconic piece of california history destroyed. the famous cement ship. it sat at sea cliff state beach over 100 years but it lost its battle against the storm. the ss palo alto was broken and driven further apart from the pier. such a sad loss. once it had a dance floor, a swimming pool, and a cafe. it is now lost to time. the pier no match for the storm. a large section of it fell into the ocean. you see the force of the water. and those are the benches people used to take pictures, boom, gone. >> the power of water,

something we have seen demonstrated not just by the ocean, but by raof ore. let's take a look at what's happening first alert doppler. we have a few showers lingering. this is the storm system that just refuse to go away. this isn't going to cause anything in terms of additional flooding problems but a few more hit and miss showers making their way directly toward the southern sections of the north bay, specifically marin county and san francisco and down the peninsula. this activity moving west to east. it is not very heavy. it could be lingering. there is a chance here and there. this system, add it up, about an inch and a third of total rainfall. quite a bit more than that for the north bay and the highest amounts as expected in the santa cruz mountains where more than four inches of rain fell. generally the number is getting close to what we predicted headed into the event. the wind gusts were certainly a factor

and we are not done with this parade of storm systems. which started the day after christmas. since december 26th. through today. we have picked up downtown san francisco, 10.6 inches of rain over the 11 days. here is the remarkable thing. the previous 359 days added up less rain than just the pa will stay in this unsettled pattern through next week and likely into the week after that. we will track the approach of the widespread rain coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, paul. as thousands of you are in the dark tonight, pg&e crews are scrambling to get electricity back on for 22,000 customers plus. you are looking now at the pg&e outage map in realtime. most of the outages affecting you in the peninsula and the north bay. oillets go from the north bay up to the east bay where the entire east oakland apartment complex behind me, it is red tagged from the storm. a lot of people forced to find shelter last

night. a huge eucalpytus tree fell across the top of that building. and, removal crews are out. they have been doing there what they have been doing all over the bay area. in this case, the force of the fall. >> loose branches, all that. right there. trees have been falling. >> thankfully, nobody got hurt. thaluntil that red tag you seth o on lled lace e ft out yoat mi pele in another east oakland apartment complex are displaced. they have been displaced since new year's day. the bottom line, frustration follows the flood. andrea nakano introduces you to one family still waiting to go home. >> reporter: this is not the way families hoped to start off the new year and some of the kids are having the hardest time with this. as they go back to school, they are now calling a hotel their new home.

>> i just want to be at home where i feel comfortable. >> reporter: serenity is one of many staying at an oakland hotel since new year's day. after being displaced, it has been tough to concentrate at school. >> i want to be back home where i can read, be on my phone and be a kid. >> reporter: the family captured this video of a flooded sidewalk outside of their home and this is what it looked like inside. >> the garage, it looked like it was a river. >> reporter: this is what the garage looked like thursday night five days after the flooding began. according to faviola, crews have been unable to pump the water out and the entire building is without power. >> today, i'm everything but mostly i'm frustrated. >> reporter: she hasn't been

told when she might be able to return. she feels the one good thing to come from this ordeal is that the displaced residents have come together as a community. but they all just want to go back home. >> it gets more and more frustrating because everything gets accumulated. it is not just one emotion or two. but multiple. all of them are stuck. you don't know if you want to cry or be angry or anything. >> our thoughts are with you tonight. we hope you can recover soon. now back to capitola. look at this. heavy equipment. the storm surge pushed up there, pummeled them, left them with a mess. here is mary lee with more the damage. >> in awe of the power of this

of our wharf area. >> reporter: tony valdez took us along the trestle to show us the damage to the historic capitola pier. >> disbelief. it had to take a huge hit to do something that damaging. so, that's why we have to have a lot of respect for that water out there. >> reporter: jeff richie has liveded in capitola his entire life. >> it is amazeing to see the destruction. my son and i were just walking on that wharf last weekend and had breakfast out there. so, it is kind of amazing. my son and i have been commenting on how you know, we were just walking on that thing. >> reporter: david morris' family has owned his boat shthw they are cut off. >> i don't know what the extent of it is until we can get down there. i don't know when that

will happen. but my heart goes out to everybody in this community as far as this has been here for 90 years. 100 years. >> reporter: the powerful waves caused a lot of damage to businesses near the waterfront. >> we saw buildings taking damages. it was nervous. kept you on your feet. >> right now, we are trying to figure out what the next system is and if we are going to keep the closure in place. >> reporter: as for tony valdez, he says he will be keeping a close eye on the ocean. >> it's amazing seeing what nature can do. you know. have a lot of respect for it. you have to. >> yes you do. further up the coast in san mateo county, that

surf is still very, very strong. in fact, this is how a stretch of highway 1 looked this morning. those waves just coming up over onto the pavementment the highway. a man visiting pacifica had a front row seat to the powerful waves when the storm surge hit. he took the video of the crashing surf that spilled out on the sidewalk. it is pretty loud. and then hit right in front of his seaside airbnb. >> the waves, they were hitting the pier and the street. we weren't afraid. because i don't know. we were just so astonished by how powerful it was and how beautiful. we weren't thinking about being afraid. >> the waves are more of a pain for this pacifica resident shoveling sand out of his garage. that was a y e toldm wa't too hed it ke prursor for what came this morning. 9:00

yubas, highway 152, watsonville, you are warned to gather your pets and documents and prescription medications and be ready if you are told to get out if needed. >> we do need times when we are going to be stressed out for us to get out of this drought, too. so, we need the rain. we are thankful for the rain. and, we are going to have to deal with some of the issues if we get more rain than we need. >> people there trying to get some perspective amid the damage. similar story along the russian river in the north bay. on friday, the rising and raging russian expected to swell at 33 feet. that's a foot over flood stage. and then, get this. by sunday, it will likely hit 49 feet. so, to the city now where there is a big cleanup ahead at this gas station in south san francisco. after this canopy came crashing down, causing firefighters to have to rush. in fact, it took the pumps right along with it. that canopy stood for 60 years before last night's storm. just wiped it out. you know, a lot r

cars really had to do battle with the water. that water coming in from overflowing creeks, this is the aftermath that can lead to raging repair bills. the damage we are told might not be noticeable right away. >> one of my neighbors was parked down there. she had an older car. by the time she got down there, the flooding was so intense, it messed up her electrical system. her insurance company ended up totaling the car. >> so some news you can use. a word from that mechanic. if you can feel water on the carpet of your car, the telltale sign that you have some water damage so reach down and feel it. >> and be very careful buying any used cars the next several months. >> we saw the flooding in houston and there was a whole

alert about it. >> every time. and we will have to deal with this as we head through the next several days because we have more of this headed our way. we will talk about what will happen the next several days. the new is not great. we have some showers. i will show you those on the first alert doppler in a moment. there's a chance of showers tomorrow. but it is not going to be a high impact rain event. best chance north of the golden gate. but widespread rain moves in by saturday morning and that will be with us with a low end atmospheric river. and then heavier rain. and stronger winds on the way next week. specifically monday and tuesday. here is the shower activity out there right now. a few showers making their way on shore. the bulk of it trying to get away from the unstable air and make its way further inland. this will be light hit and miss stuff. not as intense as it is over the water. the futurecast has a good pattern on it. a far cry from the wet

conditions we had the past couple of days. largely dry. on friday. even a few peek of sunshine possible. the best chance of showers north of the golden gate. we will be waiting on the next round of rain which will be lurking off the coast. the rain coming at us in waves. one before the sun comes up saturday. more off and on showers. locally heavy downpours as we head into the first half of the day. and more widespread and heavier rain saturday evening and saturday night. this isn't as organized a system as what moved in yesterday. as what came in on new year's eve but it will be enough to exacerbate any existing flooding problems and could lead to new flooding problems though the rainfall totals are not going to be off the charts with this particular system. we are down to off and on showers, if you are headed to the 49ers game, it should be dry. you may want to bring the poncho just in case. adding up just the weekend rainfall.

north of the golden gate, you will get the heftiest amounts. some of the higher elevations approaching three inches of total rainfall through sunday afternoon. further to the south, the amounts are going to be lower. still potentially problematic. anywhere from a half inch to an inch of rain. it could lead to new flooding problems and futurecast indicating the potential for maybe an inch-and-a-half of rain. the wind will be another factor. the winds not too strong to start the day tomorrow. but they start to pick up by tomorrow afternoon. the whole atmosphere gets squeezed by this approaching storm system. the winds will be gusty as the sun comes up saturday especially along the coast. the strongest winds accompany that first burst of rain. 35 to 50 mile-an-hour gusts along the coast. in the high sierra, this will be a

snow maker. that stronger atmospheric river headed our way. this will be a low end atmospheric river that heads our way saturday night. it usually means beneficial rainfall, but with the rain we have had, even a low atmospheric river impact will bring hazardous conditions. tomorrow temperatures warm, upper 50s , low 60s, then a four straight alert days. the heavier rain is monday and tuesday. charlie? >> thank you, paul. coming up in sports, on bil damar hamlin. plus, a thriller on the hilltop. where the dons able to hold off the zags? details

you want good news? we have it. doctors say buffalo bills safety damar hamlin is awake. he is now moving his hands and his feet, communicating a little bit. they are calling his recovery the last 24 hours remarkable. while he appear to be neurologically intact, he is still critically ill. hamlin still was not able to talk today. but, through writing, we understand, you have a headline here. right? >> yes, the first thing he did say today through writing, did we win the football game. so, he is all there. and that is exactly what you want to hear in this situation. the 49ers spoke today about the incident and how the game of football perspective changes a bit after a situation like this. >> prayers out to him. praying that he pulls through, obviously, man. but make you look at the game differently. i have a son. obviously, he want to be like dad when he grows
