with -- nu . rk being done te ore geby that next ve the storm . we take you to the hardest hit areas on the coast. there is a silver lining to all the rain. we will get the boost to our water supply. i am ryan yamamoto and the bay area is in between storms but the next round of rain is not far often it will be a wet and windy one. taking a live look outside, it is gloomy but we have seen some pockets of blue sky and for the first time in a while, it is dry. we begin our team coverage with paul heggen, who says it will not stay that way for long. >> it is not. we are mostly

dry. there are some showers over the north bay that are not amounting to anything problematic. they are going from southwest to northeast over sonoma county but there are some sprinkles. that activity will dwindle as we go into this evening. the futurecast show some hit or miss showers are possible by sunset. the next wave of rain will roll in potentially before the sun comes up on saturday morning. this first wave of rain will be followed by off and on showers for the rest of saturday, but even heavier rain comes saturday evening into saturday night. we have a flood -- it continues all the way through tuesday because the additional waves of rain are coming in sunday night and monday and into monday night and tuesday. there are multiple mudslide liking and flitting at impassable roads and rapper drake for an creek rises. the prediction center is tuesday's excessive rainfall outlooks and you do not want to be included in this at all. generally, we see ourselves in a marginal to slight risk. the north bay is under moderate risk of sick excessive rainfall. farther down than mine -- it shows the

entire bay area in the moderate risk of excessive rainfall. you really see this on the fourth day of the forecast. this is an exceptional series of events that will take shape, including a wind advisory that goes into effect at 4:00 and continues until 1:00 sunday. the strongest winds are tomorrow and tomorrow evening. it will be up to 20 miles per hour with wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour. more downed trees and power lines are likely. make sure all your devices are charged. we will have to ride this one out. look at the duration of the storm system -- we will talk about it more later. they are restoring power to 25,000 bay area customers as they brace for the next storm. >> what is particularly challenging for us in these weather conditions is, obviously, the access, where equipment is damaged. it is the access to some of the saturated roads, hillsides, that we need to get onto to repair equipment, and flooding in lower lying areas, the more

we just made it out of covid and we were looking to revamp and reset and try to keep pushing through, but this is just another major setback. >> reporter: a setback, but oakley is set up toally d whatwas lost. >> look at this. there is a birds eye view of highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. cruz appeared to be fixing a guardrail but cars that seem to be able to get around all the debris. he we have a look at the cleanup efforts all around other parts of the bay area. >> crews are in a race against the rain. check out this mangled mess. this is niles canyon. it looks like the guard rail toppled over across the roadway. other crews had their hands full. they were picking up fallen stumps and tree branches one by one and clearing out boulders, all taking over road. pacifica

looking more like a dog zone. i and mounds of what santa spilled over onto the road. we saw trucks going back and forth, trying to toss the sand onto the beach. woman who lives across the street says her car is still stuck in the mud. she described the moment she saw the wave coming right at her while she was inside her home. >> i was inside, packing some clothes as a go bag in case i needed to live and i heard a loud bang and it was a wave that crashed into our house and took out the bottom of our garage door. >> that woman was not injured. or garage, on the other hand, will need a little work. >> thank you. communities have been facing evacuation warnings. the soil is reaching saturation point with creeks, streams, rivers at or over flutter stage. those that live here

are now being warned to gather pets and what documents, prescription medication, and other things they need to get out if needed. >> we do need, times where we are going to be stressed-out, for us to get out. we need the rain. we are thankful for the rain , and we will have to deal with some of the issues if we get more rain than what we need. >> check out a video from sonoma lake -- a drone catching a rainbow, a pretty site. it is just one reminder saying that there is a wonderful boost to the water supply. >> maybe because they put in the tanks, we have the rain . >> when we first met penny, it is the last of november and she had just gotten her new water tanks. >> this is all a work in progress. >> barely a month later, she has 300 gallons of progress on one side of the house -- here

is the other tank. >> that is another 300 gallons on the other. >> hopefully it continues throughout the rainy season. >> reporter: 20 minutes away, things are adding up at sonoma counties largest source of water storage. >> a little more than 35,000 acres. >> it is great. >> the good news is that lake sonoma is rising. the bad news is it might take rain all through next week just to get the water level back to where they started last year. >> it is not like that is great. we need to get well above that for it to be great. >> reporter: just how far to go? they could see double the amount of water in this lake and still be in the water supply pool , as in no flood releases necessary. farther north, lake mendocino is filling up but, of course, that is a smaller lake. of all the rain that falls in this area,

only 18% ends up in either reservoir. >> in other words, 82% of the watershed is just free-flowing. >> that takes us to the russian river, where there is some good news in the very short-term. the forecast for crest on friday and saturday were both scaled-back. only sunday is expected to be above flood stage and at a lower level than initially expected, however, there is still concern about next week. >> it kind of keeps adding. as unless it drs be fohigher mein wobb ae ttle bit, anat isexpect to ll gog ba thid

geg breaks e an d to y ou giving some of this water a chance to move on out to the pacific. >> speaking of the pacific, here is capitola. this is along the coastline coming near the santa cruz county region. as you remember, this area has been battered by storm surge. they have a sigh of relief, to get a break to dry out and let the water drain. as you can see, a lot of damage to those businesses and severe damage to two peers in the area. many people are trying to dig out of that mess and now bracing for the next wave of storms. some surfers made the best of the recent storms, still finding spots to catch some waves. this is from the san lorenzo river in santa cruz. the water seems more manageable but as you have seen, a lot more dangerous and damaging elsewhere. servers -- some brave souls are here. this was yesterday but while it may be tempting to go out, we want to remind you of all the flood

flood related damage. >> on this one, the computer is located towards the floor of the vehicle but if you can tell, we still have water coming in from the car. >> reporter: he is not surprised, considering this is what the street looked like outside of his shop after the storm on new years. >> definitely, there will be more vehicles coming in. not today, not tomorrow, but eventually. >> reporter: they could tell that some had damaged their cars but they may not know until later on down the line. >> overtime, water and condensation will get into electronics and it can take a month or even a year before you start seeing some of those signs. >> reporter: water damage can lead to pricey repairs. >> if the water got to the point where it damages a lot of electronics on the vehicle, it can actually be more than the value of the vehicle. >> reporter: back on this court, where some are parked in

the mud, he feels for his neighbors, now dealing with the flooding fall out. >> there were at least four cars that got towed away because they did not get out here in time. >> reporter: he remains hopeful he does not see any problems with his car as the year unfolds. >> some county parks are back open around the bay area but they are urging caution if you plan to go since they will likely be storm related -- if you're going to the sierra, caltrans lifted chain controls on i 80 and highway 50 as they continue to dig out from the last warm and brace for the next one. ever look at the forecast with meteorologist paul heggen. today is the day to kind of breathe a sigh of relief. tomorrow, we have two tents right back up. >> it is just a catch to -- there is a parade of storm system that will continue. the next one is lighting up. the one not -- we will see increasing rain chances later on tonight. let's look at what

is going on. we have a few showers over the north bay that are light and more miss than hit but do not be surprised if you get some sprinkles on the windshield. another chance of rain comes tonight. let's go to the futurecast. we will track this until the forecast model data runs out monday. let's look at friday evening. that is dry. you have a chance, again, it will be dark after 5:00 to maybe clear out any drains and that any winds are not blown into your gutters. it will be looming offshore and become -- even a router before the sun comes up on saturday morning. the best chance of the heaviest rain, initially, will be north of the golden gate but everyone has a good chance of rain saturday morning. there are often on showers through much of the afternoon. we do not have any widespread flooding string the daylight hours on saturday, but saturday evening, around a failure rate will come moving in and that will be following through much of the evening and overnight , living up to the east, likely before the sun comes up. and then

sunday we have a chance to catch our breath. we will be mostly dry. there could even some breaks in the cloud cover. if you're going to the niners game, things are looking good. maybe bring up poncho and some paper towels to wipe off your seeds. and then here, this will come surging in already by sunday evening and sunday night. look how long this remains parked in place. wave after wave after wave of moderate to heavy rainfall on top of already saturated soil. here are the amounts. for the north bay, the first part of the system, we are talking about an inch to two inches of rain on a widespread basis. this is the saturday/saturday night amount of rainfall. then on top of that, you have more rain. by the time we get to 10 a.m., there is more rain. monday and tuesday, we are looking at three to five inches of rain and some places could get close to seven inches of rain already at that point. of the bay area will not get as much out of the first system. maybe an inch to an inch and a half. other areas could get less than an inch of rain. other areall--the raem after sy

gusts or. wind advi at 4:00 a.m.turd t th e latemo at the higher elevations. et u finally, after that burst of rain moves through saturday night, the winds will come down. there is a winter storm warning in the high sierra. they will pick up more snow, one to three feet this weekend and -- plus wind gusts up to 16 miles an hour. it is practically impossible conditions. you can see the line on the map. the one we had a couple days ago on wednesday was brief but fairly intense, moderate strength in the atmospheric river. this one is also a week to moderate atmospheric river on saturday, on the lower end of the scale. the one on monday is worse. you are seeing 10 to 12 days worth of rain and in short order, a

week atmospheric river to soak the ground and then a much stronger one to inundate everything. it looks like another one will come by the end of next week. >> we are in that break with a little bit of sunshine. soak it up while you can. we have the observations and temperatures are in the upper-50s and low-60s. the forecast does not really matter in terms of temperature. we will hover close to -- , our break but that is still an alert day because of sunday into monday. some of the rain lingers into tuesday. wednesday and thursday, the showers look lighter and more intermittent, but it will not be dry completely. and and we have more rain by the end of next week, thursday night into frid
