it's just a matter of where can we be safe? >> it's about assessing all the damage and then just salvaging what we can. >> now at 11:00 a coastal town devastated, the worst storm damage in decades, now another one about to ththe late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. tonight the bay area still dealing with all this mess left behind from wednesday's powerful storm, but another one is headed our way. people are worried the ground is just too saturated to handle it. right now capitola trying to bounce back from the worst storm damage they've seen in over 40 years. this is some new chopper video over the coastline and it shows a part of the cliffside just crumbled away under an apartment complex. chunks of cement went with it and this is the reality for beachside business owners. just look at them standing in the rubble left after those huge waves
11:01 pm
smashed their stores and their restaurants. the capitola village saw some of the worst damage. a lot of businesses had to beleed th wrked foundations, damaged sewer lines and buckled floors. >> i think right now again it's about assessing all the damage and then just salvaging what we can. it's difficult, you know. it's like a small family business. we just made it out of covid, the other side. we're looking to revamp and reset and try to keep pushing through, but then this is another major setback. >> awful, cannot imagine having to deal with that. look outside right now. it's nice. it's clear, but we won't really see conditions like this for a little while because more storms are headed our way. we haven't been talking about a storm. we've been talking about rounds of storms. >> right. so we had one right after christmas, another new year's eve, another one on wednesday. we get another one tomorrow and tomorrow night,

another one monday into tuesday, another one later next week. it does not end and it's too much in a short amount of time. we want the water, but we don't necessarily want it like this. it's a case of be careful what you wish for. let's talk about what's seeing a few showers trying to make their way into the north bay. the light green is mostly evaporated before think it's the ground. some heavy rain is already surging off the sonoma county coast a little earlier than anticipated. this one has the best handle on the current placement of the rain intensifying that through the next four or five hours. so widespread showers three hours before the sun comes up north of the golden gate, showers right along the coast at that point with heavier rain in the coastal ranges of sonoma and marin county. towards sunrise the rain really takes over the north bay. some localized flooding is possible north of the golden gate to start the day tomorrow. the heavier rain makes its way onshore through the rest of the bay area through monday morning. i'm not overly concerned about
11:03 pm
widespread flooding. this forecast model tend to overdo the intensity how it displays the radar data a little bit. it's more of an off and on pattern saturday afternoon, but another wave of more organized and definitely heavier rain heads our way tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. flood watch goes into effect 4 a.m. for the north bay, 4 p.m. the rest of the bay area and goes all the way through 4 p.m. tuesday. you usually don't see 72 to 84 hour duration flood watches, but that's the case with this system. the last time i saw something like that was back when i was covering hurricane florence in north carolina in 2018. so flooding, mudslides, all these things possible along with wind damage. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. >> i feel like it would be easier to say when it's not going to rain. of course it, doesn't work like that and we really need to be prepared. thank you for all of that. up in sonoma county the russian river could be a problem. flooding is a big concern there. there is still an evacuation warning in effect. the river is supposed to reach 32 feet sunday night
11:04 pm
and it could surpass 39 feet on tuesday night and that is when we would see flooding. that's why people need to be ready to leave at a moment's notice. mudslides are an issue elsewhere. most inland parks in the east bay regional parks district are closed because of that. the briones open space saw multiple mudslides. the storm was especially bad for a preschool up in san anselmo. the cooperative nursery school had a tree crash onto its building after the storms new year's day. thankfully it was empty when this happened. over in alameda county sunol glen school was a mue trying to clean up almost a foot of mud before kids come back from winter break on monday. >> pretty much a raging river coursing through the campus. three classrooms out back had actually moved one to two feet off their foundation. >> people have been donating to replace the damaged furniture

we have, what we believe we have, is some metal flashing and shingles and underlayment that are just not installed properly. we're going to take that all apart and basically do surgery on it. so the roof damage we believe is coming from this corner here. >> reporter: shane says it's usually when it's raining that homeowners discover they have a problem with their roof. he took us inside the home to show us where the roof is leaking and the damage to the ceiling in this kitchen pantry. >> it's been a long time since we've seen storms like this and the amount of rain we're getting and calls that are coming through of questions what to do and how. >> moving shingles here. >> reporter: with our powerful atmospheric rivers we've already seen and more storms on the way, shane says it's so important to get an annual roof inspection, which is free. he said you should have regular roof maintenance to clean your gutters and roof surfaces every year. >> it's not always that easy to know unless you're really
