that's accompanying that line o thunderstorms and very brief heavy downpours coming with it. thankfully we're now out of fir season, otherwise this would be a totally different story. but the primary concerns with a lin of thunderstorms like that woul be personal safety. when thunde roars, go indoors. you want to be in a structure right now if you're in sonoma county. coming in for a close up look and taking that line and play this slowly, it's just a slow march across sonoma county and marin county. some soft showers appea to be extending down to the golden gate, but it's unlikely they'll hold together from the golden gate south. let's come i for a closer look. we can take it from this point on the western edge of sonoma county and bring it ahead half hour by half hour. by the time we get t 11:30, it's still up here. this is where you'll be seeing the lightning and also where you'll
11:03 pm
get small hail and very strong wind. that, as we've seen over the last few days, sometimes ha the biggest impacts of any with downed trees, broken limbs, and debris just getting moved around. there will be a lot to track with that. but you can watch the progression. by 1:00 a.m. it's off to the east. and by sunrise tomorrow, we're even done with the rain. we'll talk about the flood watch in the first alert forecast coming up in just a bit. we'll get back into that mode again. but that lightning is certainly going to catch people's attention over the next three hours, especiall in the north bay. since the series of winter storms rolled in last week, mor than a million pg&e customers lost power at some point. this is a live look at the latest outage map. all the colored shapes there reflect the thousands of customers that are still in the dark. and with a new storm moving in now, pg&e says about 14,000 bay area customers have lost electricity most of them are in the north

day and peninsula. downed trees falling on power lines are responsible for a lot of the outages. tree experts in the oakland hills sa strong winds are causing many o the trees to fall. the trees ar already saturated, on unstable ground, and some have major roo decay. >> the tree looks beautiful, green, bright, very healthy, an the whole root system is decayed. >> reporter: and you're seeing that more often? >> i'm seeing that more often. >> it's as much saturated and making a crevice, and that can' be good. >> if you have large trees near your home, you may want to ask tree expert to come take a look san carlos brewery devil's canyon is closed for now. they were flooded out earlier this week. the owner says they're unsure when they'll open back upbut he expects repairs to take at least a couple of weeks >> the creeks were completely

overwhelmed. as a result, they jumped their banks and died down our streets and right into our buildings. they clogged up our storm drains, and then overwhelmed the facility. up and down the coast, home and business owners alike are trying to dig out, mop up, and dry out ahead of the next round of storms. last week a storm look a chunk out of this wharf. the beach was littered with tre trunks and debris, and flooded near the shoreline. one residen said he got five to seven feet of water in the basement of his house. >> the clean up is going to tak a long time, and people have to be patient. it's something that's going to be with us for long time. this is no easy fix. this is going to take a long, long time to clean up. >> some homeowners had to get pumps to remove remaining water hopefully preventing or minimizing future flooding. more rain means more flooding concerns around the river as an evacuation warning is still in effect for the area the river is supposed to reach

the rain started early near sonoma today. took awhile to reach the south bay and east ba by late afternoon, so before it happened, people were out enjoying their saturdays while they could. in walnut creek, quite a queue people enjoying the ice rink. a lot of small business owners took advantage of the dr start to the day to prepare their stores for the next round of rain. >> betty yu checked with a business that was hit hard to see how they're faring. >> reporter: it was a rough start to the new year for many businesses here in the mission. as you can see, many of them

have fortified their entrances in preparation for more rain. after being closed for a week following the new year's eve storm, fresh pizzas are once again coming out of the oven at pink onion on 14th street and the kitchen stove is back on. >> from one hour after the flooding started until maybe five hours ago, we finally got the water heater up d running. that was the last piece we needed, d in between then we've had refrigeration companies, electrical companies gas, plumbers, water heater repair guys, floor guys, dry wall guys. >> reporter: the owner estimate the repairs already set him bac at least $50,000. >> that's not even including my time or my family's time or
11:13 pm
anything like that. >> reporter: this was the view from pink onion a week ago when the street turned into a river. the restaurant was flooded and equipment destroyed. since then the city came to unclog storm drains and catch basins, but no before several businesses in th area were hit with thousands of dollars in damages. a business owner nearby is still cleaning up and expected to open mid-january. this space, also a 14th street, was supposed to be a new bread or bagel factory. i wasn't yet open for business when the storm ecd nearly everything inside. workers were busy making repairs as the rain fell late in the day on saturday. there's still a room full of soggy boxes. >> i have faith in the city at this point that they're not going to let it happen again. and we still have our metal storm doors there. if things ge bad, we'll just do that. >> reporter: matthew said immediately afr the storm, his workers stepped up and cleared e ains themselves before the city got around to responding.
11:14 pm
and it made the difference. the six-year-old restaurant said it's confident it can survive what's to come. >> it's another obstacle, but i guess we've just been battle tested. darren, we've been fascinated by that map over there and the amount of lightning hitting the north bay right now. >> and think about what the sho is going to look like over the north bay over the next two hours as this line of really impressive lightning is marching across the bay. we've seen the possibility for an increase in rainfall rates and wind around this time. we were looking at that at 6:00. but th intensity of the lightning is far more impressive than we expected. and you already know this, if you're in sonoma county, the sky is lighting up. if we come in for a close up look, the primary concerns here would be public safety. under of lightnhappening out there lo right now. enjoy the show from
11:15 pm
the comfort and safety of your home. that's the first concern. but to go along with this, as impressive as the ghtninis, there are two her impacts from this. there's going to be very strong wind with that line of thunderstorms as it comes through. as we've seen from the last few days, that's been producing some of the most significant damage. the ground is now so water logged, and we have trees so drought stressed, it doesn't take much to blow things over. that's going to supercharge that situation. across the north bay right now, you want to be indoors, not onl because of the lightning, but because of any downed trees or flyi debris. that line will likely be pulled through marin, and it's going to takea few hours to march across sonoma an marin. once we've gotten to around 2:00 in the morning, the lightning show will be off for us. it may still be on in the central valley, but off for us.
11:16 pm
and by sunrise tomorrow or a little after, the rain is done. so that's the system tonight. it's going out with quite a bang. if you look at the totals on here, we still have an inch and a half to go in the north bay from this and an inch in th south bay. this is setting the stage. here comes the rest of the wind. you don't have to be on that impressive line, it's still going to be windy from this system. most of sunday we get a break. a much needed break. the wind calms down, fro sunrise to sunset, it's great. but another system has come on shore by sunday night at 6:00. right back into the widespread rain again. in tracking the way the system is coming together, there's the plume. that steady stream of consistent widespread rain. that's where you really get into the characteristics of this as an atmospheric river. and that fire hose has shifted
11:17 pm
to the south by about 60 miles from where it was in the forecast models yesterday. that means we get a greater focus, a least going into the monday morning time frame and on on th santa cruz mountains and big sur. that's good news if you're in sonoma county. in fact, the forecast for the russian river now looks a few feet lower than it would on tuesday. but it's still going into flood stage on tuesday. but due to the shift i the forecast, it's not going as high. we'll have more on that i the coming days. but tuesday we still have rain to go. if you look at the big picture, even though the plume of the atmospheric river moves south, the center of the low comes on shore, and we're hit with this thing again on tuesday. but it' going to be a totally different kind of rain. those are the scattered isolated showers. probably see more thunderstorm mid in as well. look at the rainfall totalsor that storm. that's not including tonight. this is only looking at the monday and tuesday system.
11:18 pm
a half inches of rain coming. that's why there's a flood watch. ther will be flood advisories, stree flooding. parts of the bay will have to go under a flood warnin likely. we already know the river will likely be included. we do get a little bit of a break wednesday and thursday. things quiet down. don't turn the rain off completely, but it quiets to a manageable level. then friday, more rain heading into next weekend. charlie, ove to you. all right, i'll take it fro here. two blocks of sports on the ray. the raiders in action today, and just a shocking turn around in the afc south. wait until you see who's going to th playoffs. plus, look who's back

been very impressive. the lightning is starting to lighten up in terms of the number of strikes being detected. and the focus, as impressive as the lightning looks on here, the intensity of rain the strength of the wind is what you're going to notice more than ything else. the lightning is almost an afterthought because the gusts are quite doed trees along at line. this will be kind of a tricky period of time over the next few hours as the line of storms is marching through sonoma, marin, and then into napa. this will hold together. it won't have as much tning by e it gs to , but you'll have e intense rain and stdetracked by the show. but the flood watch is still in effect until 4:00 in the afternoon on tuesday, and we have three first alert days. much more coverage. paul will be in tomorrow morning on the newscast from
