good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. for the first time, president biden is talking publicly about the documents, some marked highly classified, that were found at a washington, d.c., office he used after he was vice president. mr. biden says he was surprised when told that materials from when he served as vp were found by his attorneys in november. cbs news was the first to report that roughly ten documents with classified markings were discovered before the midterm elections. the justice department has launched a review, and house republicans say that they will also investigate. jarred hill has more from new york. >> reporter: good morning. so newly empowered house republicans say not only do they want to know what kind of information was in these documents in biden's private office, but also why this wasn't made public before the 2022 midterms. before wrapping up his trip to mexico, president biden gave his first response to news that classified documents were found in his former d.c. think tank's office.
4:32 am
he confirmed his personal lawyers found the documents and praised them for swiftly handing the papers over to the national archives. >> they did what they should have done. i was briefed about this discovery and surprised to learn that there were any government records that were taken there to that office. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news the discovery happened on november 2nd, and that the archives also informed the department of justice which directed one of its attorneys to retrieve the materials. president biden says he doesn't know what was in the documents. >> we're cooperating fully, cooperating fully with the review in which i hope will be finished soon. >> reporter: the republican-led house oversight committee announced it's launching a probe of its own and asked the white house for all documents and a list of whoever had access to the office. >> our goal is to put a spotlight on things that aren't right. >> the president is handling it the way he should. >> reporter: this inquiry has drawn comparison into the handling of president trump's handling of classified documents.
