tornadoes and severe thunderstorms plowed through several southern states. at least six people were killed when a tornado touched down in central alabama about 40 miles to the west in selma, this large tornado was spotted. roofs were ripped off homes, ea some ilding llapse one man was in a country club when the storm moved through. >> you could hear the roar. literally being torn off right over our heads. it was scary. i've never -- hope i never have to do that again. it was awful. >> in georgia several tornadoes were reported in the atlanta area. a 6-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on a car, and there was extensive damage to homes and businesses. the national weather service confirmed a tornado with 100 mile-per-hour winds touched down in central kentucky. nationwide there were more than

30 separate tornado reports as of last night. also breaking overnight, lisa marie presley, the only child of elvis presley, has died at the age of 54. she was taken to a hospital in los angeles yesterday after suffering cardiac arrest. in a statement, lisa marie's mother priscilla said, "it is with a heavy heart that i must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter, lisa marie, has left us. she was the most passionate, strong, and loving woman i have ever known." just three days ago, lisa marie was on the red carpet for the golden globes in beverly hills. she praised austin butler for his award-winning portrayal of her father, elvis presley, in the movie "elvis." the 54-year-old followed in her father's footsteps and carved out a music career of her own. her first album was released in 2003. danya bacchus takes a look back at lisa marie's life. >> reporter: born into music royalty, lisa marie presley was the only child of elvis and priscilla presley. lisa marie lived in his

graceland estate in memphis until her parents separated when she was 4. she was 9 when elvis died in 1977 of apparent heart failure from the use of prescription drugs. on the 40th anniversary of his death, lisa marie served as a torch bearer at a graceland memorial. in the summer of 2022, presley honored her father as the biopic "elvis" premiered. >> a very special moment. we feel honored. thank you. >> reporter: in 1988, presley's first of four marriages was to rock and roll musician danny keough. they had two children including a son who died in 2020. she married pop icon michael jackson in 1994, a relationship widely covered in the tabloid media. another marriage to oscar-winning actor nicolas cage ended just after 100 days to be followed by a fourth to musician and producer michael lockwood. in 2003 she launched her music career. her debut album titled "to whom it may concern" made the billboard charts.

danya bacchus, cbs news. a special counsel is now investigating the discovery of classified documents at two locations connected to president biden. one at his home in delaware, the other at an office once used by mr. biden. now republicans are also calling on congress to get involved. jared hill has more on all of this. >> reporter: good morning, a rocky one for the white house caught flat footed on the issue of transparency regarding these classified documents found at now two properties linked to president biden. the attorney general says appointing the special counsel shows a commitment to independence and accountability. attorney general merrick garland veteprunr fo presidentmp, to investigate president biden's handling of classified material. >> it was in the public interest to appoint a special counsel. >> reporter: president biden confirmed to reporters yesterday that classified documents were found in locked ga at his

home in wilmington, delaware. >> yes, as well as my corvette. but as i said earlier this week, people know i take classified documents and classified material seriously. >> reporter: the documents were from his time as vice president. earlier this week, the white house revealed that in november mr. biden's lawyer had found ten classified documents at the penn biden center in d.c. where he once had an office. in december, a second batch of documents was discovered at his wilmington home, and thursday his lawyers told the department of justice about another document found there. >> did he know that these documents had been removed and then when he found them he gave them back, so what was the length of this period of unauthorized retention, and was it intentional? >> reporter: house speaker kevin mccarthy called for a congressional investigation. >> this is what makes america not trust their government. >> reporter: the president's lawyers say that they immediately turned over every classified document that was

found. now the fbi has been investigating this for almost two months now, and cbs news has learned that agents have already interviewed multiple biden aides. meanwhile, the investigation continues into former president trump who resisted requests to hand over the hundreds of classified documents at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in new york, thank you. the man charged in the november stabbing deaths of four university of idaho students waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing. 28-year-old bryan kohberger appeared in court yesterday with cuts on his face. the sheriff said it was from shaving. kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary. he has not entered a plea. a judge set a preliminary hearing for june 26th to give kohberger's lawyers more time to prepare. a lawyer for the victims' families spoke after the date was set. >> the families surprised it's been delayed so long, six months out.

seems quite a ways out for that type of hearing. >> kohberger will remain behind bars without bail. and a u.s. citizen from michigan who was detained in russia for nine months has been released. 35-year-old navy veteran taylor dudley apparently illegally crossed the border from poland into a russian province located between lithuania and poland in april. his family said he went to poland for a music festival and crossed the border. officials say there was no prisoner swap when he was handed over to u.s. custody yesterday. and those red-hot inflation rates seem to be cooling. inflation declined to 6.5% for the month of december. that's compared to a year earlier. back in june rates hit 9%, but as nicole d'anpotio to emrtaire costly. >> reporter: falling gas prices are helping to ease inflation. the bureau of labor statistics says prices fell more than 9% in

"the washington post" reports santos said that he's lived an honest life amid calls for him to resign. santos, who has admitted to lying about much of his background while running for office, is also facing campaign finance questions. several republican representatives and gop leaders in new york say he should step down. yesterday santos appeared on steve bannon's podcast where he was questioned by republican congressman matt gaetz. >> i've worked my entire life, i've lived an honest life. i've never been accused of -- of any bad doing. you know, it's my -- it's the equity of my hard working self, and i invested inside of me.

>> santos says that it's up to the voters to decide his fate in the two years. the "associated press" says vaccination rates for u.s. kindergarten kids dropped again last year. that's according to the cdc. the vaccination rate for measles, tetanus, and certain other diseases is usually about 95%, but it fell below 94% in the 2020 to 2021 school year when covid first hit. it dropped to about 93% in the following year. experts say falling vaccination rates open the door to outbreaks of diseases. and cbs los angeles says that a car nearly hit two people as it plowed into an outdoor dining patio at a restaurant. security video shows the car crashing into barriers and tables wednesday in sierra madre as two people walked just feet away. a passenger in the car was taken to the hospital, but no major injuries were reported. there is no word, though, on
